  • Patent number: 6755117
Abstract: A tandem vacuum booster includes a rear housing mounted to the vehicle, and a front housing mounted to the rear housing to define an interior chamber. A divider, disposed between the housings, partitions the interior chamber into primary and secondary chambers. A primary diaphragm, disposed between the rear housing and the divider, partitions the primary chamber into a primary high pressure chamber and a vacuum chamber. A secondary diaphragm, disposed between the divider and the front housing, partitions the secondary chamber into a secondary high pressure chamber and a vacuum chamber. A tie rod extends between the housings and through the chambers. A sleeve is disposed about the tie rod and extends between the high pressure chambers and is spaced from the tie rod. This sleeve defines a passage between the tie rod and itself such that air can be transferred between the high pressure chambers.

  • Publication number: 20040118381
Abstract: An accumulator fuel system for an internal combustion engine having a plurality of engine cylinders, includes an accumulator fuel volume for supplying high pressure fuel to one or more of a plurality of injectors, each of which is arranged to supply fuel to an associated one of the engine cylinders. The accumulator fuel volume is integrated within an engine component, where the engine component provides a purpose other than that solely of an accumulator volume for storing high pressure fuel. The accumulator fuel volume is therefore defined in an existing engine component, to reduce part count, weight and cost. In one embodiment the accumulator fuel volume is defined within a rocker shaft of the engine and in another embodiment within the engine cylinder head.

  • Patent number: 6754571
Abstract: A system and method of controlling engine vibration mounted within a vehicle including at least one hydraulic mount, each mount including a fluid chamber. A pair of accelerometers sense relative acceleration across the mount between the engine and the frame and generate a relative acceleration signal. A control unit is electrically connected to the accelerometers. The control unit is adapted to generate an electronic control signal in response to the relative acceleration signal. The control device is responsive to the electric control signal for controlling the damping force of the hydraulic mount. A control algorithm calibrates the control unit such that maximum vibration damping occurs at and around the engine resonance bounce frequency.

  • Patent number: 6753780
Abstract: A motion sensing system and method for detecting an occupant in a vehicle with enhanced sensitivity to detect small movement, such as movement caused by heartbeat and breathing of an occupant. The system includes a radar motion sensor located in a compartment of the vehicle. The radar sensor transmits and receives signals within the compartment and generates sensed signals. The system has a controller for converting the sensed signals to a frequency domain. The controller further processes the frequency domain of sensed signals and determines the presence of movement of an occupant due to one of heartbeat and breathing of the occupant.

  • Patent number: 6752928
Abstract: A property of unconnected first and second fluid flows is matched, such as, but not limited to, matching the flow rate of the replacement water stream with the waste water stream in kidney dialysis. The first and second flow paths are interconnected so substantially the same flow from the first flow source encounters a first flow transducer which is in the first flow path and a second flow transducer which is in the second flow path. Transducer readings are taken for various identical values of the property of the first fluid flow. Then the first and second flow paths are disconnected, and the property, such as but not limited to flow rate, of one of the fluid flows in one of the flow paths is controlled using transducer readings and the previous interconnected-path transducer readings to match the property in the two flows. In one example, the transducers are uncalibrated transducers.

  • Patent number: 6750763
Abstract: A system for measuring oil condition in large engines includes a bypass valve that is installed in a lubrication system along a fluid line between an oil pan and an engine. The bypass valve communicates with a measurement chamber and when energized by a control module, the bypass valve diverts oil from the lubrication system to the measurement chamber. An oil condition sensor is disposed within the measurement chamber and is used to determine the condition of the oil that is diverted to the chamber. After the condition of the oil is determined, the bypass valve is energized to release the oil from the measurement chamber back into the lubrication system.

  • Patent number: 6749650
Abstract: Method of making Li-intercalateable electrodes for a lithium-ion battery by applying a first film onto a first face of an electrically conductive grid, which film comprises a plurality of Li-intercalateable particles dispersed throughout a mixture of a polymeric binder and a plasticizer for the binder. Thereafter, a film-forming slurry having the same composition as the first film, plus a solvent therefor, is applied to a second face of the grid opposing the first face so as to provide a second film and such that the solvent in the slurry dissolves at least a portion of the first film and promotes solvent bonding of the films with the grid embedded therein. A polymeric backing film defining a separator is used as a manufacturing process aid, thereby eliminating the step of using a carrier film onto which the electrodes are fabricated and stripping off the carrier and discarding the same.

  • Patent number: 6749222
Abstract: An energy absorbing device for a collapsible steering column has a plurality of plastically deformable straps each with one end connected to the steering column and an opposite end bent around an anvil connected to stationary vehicle support structure. When the steering column collapses, the straps unwind from the anvils, thereby resisting steering column collapse and absorbing energy. One or more of the straps may be cut in two by a knife at the time of the collision, thereby removing it from the energy absorbing system. In another form of the invention, an energy absorbing strap extends around a piston which has two or more different size anvils. The piston is axially movable in a cylinder to positions surrounding one or another of the anvils. The strap is drawn over the anvil it surrounds when the steering column collapses, thereby resisting collapse of the steering column and absorbing a certain amount of energy depending on the size of the anvil.

  • Patent number: 6750521
Abstract: A semiconductor device and method by which a device chip with a micromachine is directly surface mounted to a circuit board. A capping chip is bonded to the device chip and encloses the micromachine. The capping chip has a first surface facing the device chip, an oppositely-disposed second surface, and electrical interconnects through the capping chip between the first and second surfaces. The electrical interconnects electrically communicate with runners on the device chip that are electrically connected to the micromachine, thereby providing a signal path from the micromachine to the exterior of the device. The capping chip further includes bond pads for electrical communication with the electrical interconnects. With the bond pads, the capping chip can be surface mounted to a circuit board by reflowing solder bumps formed on the bond pads.
