  • Patent number: 6493669
Abstract: A speech recognition driven system provides a speech model based on a biometric signature. Initially, the speech recognition driven system receives a biometric signature from a user of the system. Based upon the received biometric signature, the system selects a speech model. The selected speech model is utilized to determine whether a voice input provided by the user corresponds to a speech selectable task that is recognized by the speech recognition driven system. When the voice input provided by the user corresponds to the speech selectable task, the system causes the speech selectable task to be performed. In one embodiment, the biometric signature is an image of the user's face. When face recognition technology is implemented, the image of the user's face is utilized to select a speech model.

  • Patent number: 6491532
Abstract: Electrical arc suppression when terminals under load are connected/unconnected is provided via an applied magnetic field causing the arc path to be lengthened, with the consequences that the voltage necessary for the arc to be sustained is increased and the arc energy is decreased. In a preferred form, at least one magnet with a high permeability flux return path is placed adjacent the terminal proximity zone of initial/final touching of mating terminals. The magnetic field increases the arc length, and thereby suppresses the arc by increasing the voltage necessary to sustain the arc and decreasing the energy of the arc.

  • Patent number: 6492938
Abstract: An association method for a multi-slope FMCW radar identifies candidate combinations of frequency components as being correctly or incorrectly associated based on calculated range-rate. Range and range-rate are calculated for various pairs of frequency components emanating from like-polarity slopes of the transmitted waveform, and pairs having similar ranges and range-rates are combined to form candidate associations. The range and range rate of the candidate associations are then computed using all four frequency components, and ambiguous candidate associations are resolved by selecting the candidate associations having similar range rates.

  • Patent number: 6490936
Abstract: An improved weight estimation apparatus in which an elastomeric bladder is supported on a semi-rigid backer board which is installed in a vehicle seat between the seat cushion and an underlying spring suspension. The bladder is secured onto the backer board, and the backer board is attached to the seat, enabling proper and consistent placement of the bladder relative to the seat surface. The backer board provides the reaction surface for the bladder, and masks non-uniformities of the seat structure. Additionally, the backer board will reduce or eliminate the effect of objects lying on the floor under the seat, which might otherwise pinch the bladder and produce weight estimation errors. Further, the board tends to protect the bladder from damage due to sharp objects, pinching by the suspension elements, and the effects of wires or cables routed through the seat.

  • Publication number: 20020179386
Abstract: A vibration damper assembly to dampen the vibration generated in a motor vehicle and transmitted through, for example, a steering assembly. The vibration damper assembly includes a rotor disposed within a housing. The rotor is operatively connected to a velocity generating member such as a pinion that is integrated with the steering assembly. A conductive sleeve is disposed between the housing and the rotor. A coil engages the sleeve and is capable of generating a magnetic field that is transmitted through the sleeve. A plate separates the rotor from the sleeve thereby defining a viscous fluid chamber and a Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid chamber between the rotor and the sleeve. The viscous fluid chamber includes a Newtonian fluid and the MR fluid chamber includes a MR fluid having sheer properties reactive to the magnetic field.

  • Publication number: 20020180258
Abstract: An improved hydraulically assisted braking and steering system of a vehicle having a hydraulic pump communicating with a hydraulic steering assist device and including a hydraulic brake assist device coupled in series between the pump and the steering assist device includes the provision of a flow splitter which operates to reduce the interdependence of the hydraulic brake and steering assist devices on the flow of fluid from the pump. The flow splitter communicates with the outlet of the pump and the inlet of the brake assist device and is operative when the back pressure from the brake assist device exceeds a predetermined control value to divert a fraction of the flow of fluid around the brake assist device directly to the steering assist device, thereby providing sufficient flow to operate both the brake and steering assist devices within their normal design limits, rather than having the brake assist device starve the steering assist device when under heavy load.

  • Patent number: 6489761
Abstract: An analog angle encoder includes a non-magnetic stator which is cup-shaped, having a central post carrying at least one magnetosensitive device, and further including a rotor in the form of a ring captured by the stator, the rotor carrying at least one permanent magnet, wherein the rotor is rotatable relative to the stator. As the rotor rotates relative to the stator, the angle of the incident magnetic field changes relative to the magnetosensitive device, thereby causing the output from the device to vary sinusoidally with angular position. It is preferred to use magnetic configurations other than simple six sided magnets in order to achieve a more uniform magnetic field at the magnetosensitive device, as for example by utilizing cylindrical magnets, arcuate (concave faced) magnets, flat ferromagnetic layer pole pieces, arcuate (concave faced) ferromagnetic layer pole pieces, and ferromagnetic return paths.

  • Publication number: 20020175017
Abstract: A vehicle steering system includes a steering wheel and a steering shaft coupled between the steering wheel and wheels of the vehicle. The shaft is operable for rotating when the steering wheel is turned to thereby turn the vehicle wheels. A vibration damping system for absorbing vibrations in the steering wheel and shaft includes a rotor coupled to the steering shaft to rotate with the shaft and a case surrounding the rotor and a clutch surface proximate the rotor. A magnetic circuit generates a magnetic flux in the rotor. The rotor is operable to engage the clutch surface and thereby vibrationally couple the steering shaft to the case to absorb vibrations in the shaft, and when a magnetic flux is generated therein, to disengage the clutch surface so that the steering shaft may more freely rotate.

  • Patent number: 6485278
Abstract: Cold temperature performance of a pump for a controlled braking systems is enhanced, and internal flow restrictions of the pump are minimized, by placing the poppet return spring in a separate cavity out of the flow path through the pump. The separate spring cavity also allows travel of the poppet to be limited, thereby also limiting the loss of volumetric efficiency due to flow forces generated by cold, viscous fluid pushing the poppet an increasing distance from the seating area.

  • Patent number: 6484705
Abstract: A flow modifier for insertion into the chamber of a large pintle valve to change the apparent flow range of the valve to that of a smaller valve. The flow modifier includes a perforated cup-shaped restrictor disposed within the valve on the valve pintle and sealingly surrounding the valve seat such that all flow through the valve must pass through the passageways in the restrictor. The restrictor is held in place by a compression spring surrounding the pintle. The total open area of the passageways may be varied by varying their number and/or size and is preferably substantially less than the open area of the valve seat. The restrictor thus acts as a flow choke or fixed throttle to reduce the flow range of the valve. Different restrictors may be provided as required to size a single large valve having a large inherent flow range to a plurality of applications requiring valves having smaller flow ranges.

  • Patent number: 6487458
Abstract: A closed-loop control of a servo motor in which multiple closed-loop terms of a motor command are adaptively tuned and selectively activated to achieve both stable operation and improved performance. The motor command includes a first term proportional to an error signal, a second term based on the integral of the error signal, and a third term based on the rate of change of the measured feedback signal, and representing the kinetic energy of the system. The first term is continuously active, whereas the second term is only activated when the rate of change of the measured feedback signal is below a threshold, and the third term is only activated when the error signal is within a reference window, thereby allowing relatively high gains while ensuring stable operation.
