  • Patent number: 7537965
Abstract: A leadless multi-chip electronic module with leadframe bond pads is manufactured in a manner to place small signal bond pads in a central region of the module for significantly increased reliability of solder joints between such bond pads and a substrate of the module. A linear array of parallel leadframe elements disposed in a central region of the module and bridging first and second larger IC leadframe bond pads are converted into signal bond pads by a pair of partial bottom-side saw cuts. The saw cuts run parallel to and adjacent the first and second IC bond pads to electrically isolate the leadframe elements from the IC bond pads and other bond pads. The partial saw cuts are made following encapsulation and preferably before leadframe singulation.

  • Patent number: 7537849
Abstract: In a solid-oxide fuel cell system, the fuel cell stacks, the fuel reformer, tail gas combuster, heat exchangers, and fuel/air manifold, are contained in a “hot zone” within a thermal enclosure. A separate and larger structural enclosure surrounds the thermal enclosure, defining a “cool zone” outside the thermal enclosure for incorporation of “cool” components such as the air supply system and the electronic control system. To prevent unwanted temperature rise in the cool zone during shutdown, from residual heat escaping from the hot zone through the thermal enclosure, the structural enclosure is provided with vents through the lower and upper walls thereof to permit thermal convective circulation of air through the enclosure. The vents are baffled to prevent entry of splash and other contaminants, and the lower vent is provided with a float valve to prevent flooding of the enclosure in event of immersion of the SOFC system.

  • Patent number: 7538500
Abstract: A system and method is provided for improved monitoring and controlling of mechanically commutated DC motors. The system and method include DC motors, pulse-count driver circuitry for driving the motors, motor position sensing circuitry, and motor control circuitry. The system and method provide for improved motor current waveform sensing that is able to effectively reject false brake pulses, avoid erroneous processing due to fluctuating battery voltage levels, and reduce the sensitivity to variations in motor current signals due to dynamic motor load, manufacturing variation, system aging, temperature, brush bounce, EMI, and other factors. The system and method also include an improved ability to multiplex additional external motor drivers to the motor control circuitry, select between sequential and simultaneous drive modes using an SPI bit, and monitor the system controller for an error condition and simultaneously driver motors in response to the error condition.

  • Patent number: 7539661
Abstract: Accessed memory locations of a data table are assigned weights based on usage history, and a hash table chains the highest-weight key values to an abbreviated hash index. The hash table includes keys having at least a predetermined weight so that highly accessed keys are identified by hashing. Additionally, the keys chained to a given hash index are ordered based on their weight in order to optimize the overall data retrieval time. The weights assigned to accessed keys are updated over time so that the content of the hash table is adaptively updated to suit the current table look-up requirements.

  • Patent number: 7537151
Abstract: A method of heat sink manufacture in which the crests of a conductive fin are nested down into close fitting grooves in a flat, conductive base plate, with small interface gaps G. A compressive material is set inside the fin crests and the grooves, viscous enough to not intrude into the gaps G, to a level sufficient to substantially fill the grooves. The work piece thus created is subjected to a cold hydrostatic oil bath, crushing the outer surfaces of the fin crests into the internal surfaces of the grooves where the compressed seal covers, while the rest of the fin is supported against net deformation by the surrounding oil.

  • Patent number: 7533656
Abstract: An exhaust valve arrangement for use in a combustion chamber of a compression ignition internal combustion engine, includes a piston which is movable outwardly from the combustion chamber in response to pressure generated within the combustion chamber as a result of combustion, and an outer sleeve within which the piston is movable. The outer sleeve is an exhaust valve which is actuable between open and closed positions to open and close, respectively, an exhaust passage from the combustion chamber. The exhaust valve arrangement further includes a pump chamber for receiving fluid, and a pumping plunger coupled to the piston and movable with the piston so as to pressurise fluid (e.g. fuel) within the pump chamber as the piston is urged outwardly from the combustion chamber. The pressure within the pump chamber is proportional to cylinder pressure and is sensed by a sensor which provides an output signal to an Engine Control Unit (ECU 16).

  • Patent number: 7536249
Abstract: A system and method for controlling an engine involves providing a pumping torque estimation model. The model distinguishes between pumping losses due to throttling and pumping losses due to valve flow losses. The model is implemented by a pair of look-up tables. The data in each look-up table reflect Pumping Mean Effective Pressure (PMEP), which is indicative of the pumping work. The throttling loss table provides a first contribution based on an engine delta pressure. The valve flow loss table provides a second contribution based on an engine speed and a relative airload. The first and second contributions are summed and then multiplied by a predetermined factor to convert the pumping work (PMEP) into pumping torque. The model will work with naturally-aspirated, turbo-charged and super-charged air induction configurations and provides improved altitude compensation. The model will also work with both spark-ignition and compression-ignition configurations.

  • Patent number: 7534641
Abstract: A technique for manufacturing a micro-electro-mechanical (MEM) device includes a number of steps. Initially, a first wafer is provided. Next, a bonding layer is formed on a first surface of the first wafer. Then, a portion of the bonding layer is removed to provide a cavity including a plurality of spaced support pedestals within the cavity. Next, a second wafer is bonded to at least a portion of the bonding layer. A portion of the second wafer provides a diaphragm over the cavity and the support pedestals support the diaphragm during processing. The second wafer is then etched to release the diaphragm from the support pedestals.
