  • Patent number: 8205662
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the continuous casting of a metal strand (1), in which the cast strand (1) leaves a die (2) vertically or arcuately downwards and is subsequently guided in a strand guide (3), wherein the strand guide (3) has a number of pairs of rollers (4), which define between them an adjustable roller nip (5), and wherein, at the start of casting, to close the die (2) in the downward direction, a piece of strand (6) is introduced into the die (2) and is followed by the cast strand (1). In order to improve the adjustment of the roller nip, the invention provides that the piece of strand (6), which is produced with a defined or calibrated thickness (d), is inserted between the respective pairs of rollers to calibrate and/or measure the roller nip (5).

  • Patent number: 8162033
Abstract: A strand guide for a cast strand has a first roller bridge to one wide side of the cast strand and having ends defining two first section corners, a first fixed support adjacent the first roller bridge, a second roller bridge to the opposite wide side of the cast strand and having ends defining two second section corners, and a second fixed support adjacent the second roller bridge. Respective rows of rollers are rotatably mounted on each of the first and second roller bridges for engaging the respective wide sides and thereby supporting and guiding the cast strand. Respective first and second hydraulic positioners connect the first and second corners of the first and second roller bridges to the first and second fixed supports for individual positioning the rollers of the first and second roller bridges symmetrically or asymmetrically relative to the neutral phase of the cast strand.

  • Patent number: 8096157
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for rolling up a metallic strip (1), in particular a steel strip, to a coil (2), the strip (1) being kept under longitudinal tension between a driver (3), consisting of at least one driver top roll (4) and at least one driver bottom roll (5), and a winding pin (6). The strip (1) is rolled up on the winding pin (6) to form the coil (2). In order to prevent the undesired opening of the wound coil in a simple manner, a bending moment (MB) is initiated in the strip, said bending moment acting perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the strip (1) and causing a plastic deformation when a defined remaining length of the strip (1) is reached. The invention also relates to a device for rolling up a metallic strip.

  • Patent number: 7401485
Abstract: Steel strip issues continuously from a downstream end of a rolling line and can be wound up there on a coiler. An inspection table downstream of the rolling line has a surface aligned with the downstream end and the strip emerging therefrom. The coiler is below a plane of the table surface. During normal rolling the strip is deflected downward to the coiler and reeled up. For inspection of the strip, the strip is cut transversely to produce a new leading end and is fed starting at this end toward the table without substantial deflection. Then the strip is cut again upstream of the new leading end to form a strip sample separate from the strip emerging from the rolling line, which sample is fed to the table and arrested and inspected while strip emerging from the line is deflected back down to the coiler to continue coiling it up.

  • Patent number: 7396021
Abstract: A roll stub is rotatable relative to a stationary support and has a rotatable support fixed to the roll stub, an annular and radially directed seal surface fixed on one of the supports, and a seal ring on the other of the supports having a lip engageable with the seal surface. A support element that is substantially less stiff than the seal ring is provided between the other support and the seal ring for biasing the lip against the seal surface while permitting of the seal ring relative to the other support. A clamp body rotationally fixed to the other support directly engages the seal ring and presses the seal ring directly against an abutment. Interengaging tooth formations on the clamp body and on the seal ring arrest the seal ring on the other support against angular movement thereon while permitting relative radial movement.

  • Patent number: 7213846
Abstract: A bearing has a mount relative to which can move a part to which hydraulic fluid must be supplied. A connector has a housing fixed to the bearing mount and formed with a central bore centered on an axis and with a radial bore extending outward from the central bore. A tube axially shiftable in the central bore forms at the radial bore an annular compartment and has a passage opening radially into the compartment and axially at one end of the tube. A conduit is connected a coupling at one end of the tube and the part. Another coupling at an outer end of the radial bore connects to a source of hydraulic fluid under pressure so that the fluid can flow through the radial bore, annular compartment, and passage to the coupling at the one end of the tube and then through the conduit to the movable bearing part.

  • Patent number: 7181943
Abstract: Strip is descaled in a rolling line having a scale scrubber and a finishing line downstream of the scale scrubber. The strip is sprayed with water on its upper and under sides at a descaling pressure in the scale scrubber. In the scrubber the strip is treated with water at a multiplicity of locations spaced from one another in the travel direction. A furthest downstream location at the under side is spaced downstream from a furthest downstream location at the upper side. Rolling torques of at least one rolling mill of the finishing line are measured above and below the strip and control parameters are produced corresponding thereto. These parameters are fed to a control circuit and used thereby to adjust quantities of water sprayed at the locations against the upper side and under side of the strip upstream of the finishing line.

  • Patent number: 7174758
Abstract: A device for measuring the roll gap (7) between the working rollers (1a: 1b) of a cold or warm rolling stand for rolling out narrow or wide strips of metal, especially NE metal strips, by means of roll gap sensors (6) whose signals are transmitted to the servo-valves of the compressed oil control as a roll gap setpoint value for the piston cylinder units influencing said roll gap (7), and used to provide a roller gap measurement which is also suitable for such cases involving the lateral progression of said strip. In order to achieve said aim, the position or travel sensor (6) is provided in at least one bending cylinder (5a;5b) for the working cylinder (1a, 1b) for indirect reference measurement of the roll gap via the positively or negatively acting bending cylinders (5a; 5b).

  • Publication number: 20070006990
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of operating a strip casting machine for producing a metal strip, during which molten metal is continuously poured between two casting rolls (1, 2) that form a casting gap. Lateral seals (10) having sealing plates (11) are provided for laterally delimiting the casting gap, whereby the sealing plates (11) are placed or pressed with a preset placement or pressing force, whose magnitude can be set, against the end surfaces of the casting rolls (1, 2). The sealing plates (11) are, in repeatable stop-and-go steps, placed with a preset force and time against the end surfaces of the casting rolls (1, 2) and are held in the placing position for a preset time. This enables a distinct reduction in the wear of the sealing plates and of the casting roll end surfaces.
