Abstract: A context-aware service recommender system receives current user context and recommends a list of browser-based services to a user on a mobile devices. A user's mobile device receives context events from smart environments in which the mobile device is operating. Data about the context events is relayed to a service recommendation server. The server develops recommendations based on the context and other factors, and relays information about the recommended services to the mobile device. As each recommended service is selected or ignored by the user of the mobile device, the device sends implicit feedback with this information to the service recommendation server for use in subsequent recommendations.

Abstract: Channel scanning for wireless networks, such as Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), generally provides a wireless station with the information on the available WLAN resources, such as the frequency band and the maximum transmission power. The present invention provides safe and fast domain-aware channel scanning, enabling a wireless station to comply with applicable local regulations, in spite of the possibility of domain changes, with short channel-scanning time. Fast channel scanning is accomplished by active channel scanning if valid domain information is available and there is no possibility of domain change. Also, domain-independent channels, if any, are first scanned using active scan to get domain information faster.

  • Publication number: 20040105412
Abstract: A communications protocol in a system such as an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN multi-hop system providing transmission scheduling information is disclosed. The transmission scheduling is formatted within a CF-Poll+Data+SIPS data frame transmitted by the point coordinator (PC) which may be any one of the access point (AP) nodes transmitting in turn as dictated by the scheduling parameters within the scheduling information parameter set (SIPS). The SIPS comprises an offset field, the time left for the presently functioning PC; a delay field, where an AP delays functioning as a PC; and the interval field, the time allowed for an AP to function as a PC. The subsequent scheduling of assigned transmission slots by providing boundaries for the transmission frames through SIPS eliminates collisions resulting from multiple units transmitting simultaneously, thereby supporting interactive media and voice communications on WLAN multi-hop systems.

Abstract: When copies of digital are made or after use of the digital data, the quality of the digital data is reduced or degraded. The degradation may be in any way suitable to the nature of the digital data. In one embodiment, the content provider which originates the digital data may specify a degradation policy or degradation specification model for the digital data. When the digital data is copied or moved, the copy is degraded according to this specified policy or model. In this manner, the content provider can control the extent to which the end user can copy the material. The end user can make copies limited in number only by the degradation of the digital data.

  • Publication number: 20030163558
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for an operator to monitor access network services available to an end device, where the end device communicates in a heterogeneous network environment. The heterogeneous access networks can include networks such as a cellular network, a satellite network, a local area network (LAN) and a Bluetooth network. Different access networks may be available to the end device based on a location of the end device and a time that the network is being accessed. A subscriber to the system, or user of the end device, desires access to a particular network depending on the available access networks. To determine which access networks are available, an operator instructs the end device to determine available access networks located with the heterogeneous network environment. The access network information is collected from at least one node within the heterogeneous network, and made available to the operator.
