  • Patent number: 5883584
Abstract: Two sensors are carried on board a spacecraft: a first, low resolution "preview" sensor, and a second high resolution "fine sensor", the latter having sensing parameters which can be adjusted to satisfy the needs of a particular customer. The instantaneous field of view of the preview sensor is located at a fixed distance ahead of that of the fine sensor, so that within a predetermined time period, users may decide which partial data are to be transmitted by the fine sensor and under which observation parameters (such as spacial resolution, spectral channels, measuring site, size of the measured area) to their earth station in near real time, still within the course of the actual overflight. Compilation of the specific data requested by the customers takes place on-board the spacecraft upon telecommands by the customers themselves. Sensing of the data requested by the customer is then performed by the fine sensor.

  • Patent number: 5876486
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and to an apparatus for continuously removing metabolically produced carbon dioxide from respired air, such as the air found in life support systems or cabin circulating systems, using two sets of hollow fibers disposed in a flowing, carbon dioxide-selective liquid membrane. The carbon dioxide-containing respired air flows through the first set of hollow fibers and the second set of hollow fibers serves to carry away the permeate stream.

  • Patent number: 5864313
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for determining the deviation of the intermediate frequency from a given reference frequency (f.sub.R) in the case of a frequency-pulse radar system, characterized bythe time-related scanning of the echo signal such that, from an echo pulse of an individual target, several scanning values are obtained at different, preferably equidistant points in time within the echo pulse, the Doppler filtering by way of the thus obtained scanning values of an individual target so that several Doppler signals of the same frequency are obtained from the same target from whose phase differences the intermediate-frequency deviation is determined.

  • Patent number: 5843297
Abstract: A method and apparatus for carrying out an electrolytic process produces clean gases, such as oxygen and hydrogen. For this purpose, a porous diaphragm is arranged between the cathode and the anode of an electrolyzer, and a liquid electrolyte is fixed in the pores of the cathode and anode. A first gas chamber adjoins the cathode, while a second gas chamber adjoins the anode, and an educt chamber is separated from the first gas chamber by a membrane. An aqueous, non-corrosive solution of salts of inorganic and organic acids or mixtures of water with organic additives is used as an educt, which, compared with the electrolyte, has a higher partial water vapor pressure.

  • Patent number: 5779194
Abstract: The invention relates to a joint for folding and unfolding a cantilever arm on a satellite. Pivoting of the cantilever arm during unfolding is governed by a guide element which is rigidly connected with the end of the cantilever arm and is held against stop plates which are rigidly attached to the satellite, by means of at least one coil tension spring connected with cantilever arm and with satellite itself. Each of the stop plates has first, second, and third unfolded stops which cooperate with the guide element. The first and second unfolded stops are mounted symmetrically with respect to the motion plane of cantilever arm. During unfolding of the cantilever arm, the guide element strikes alternately the first two unfolded stops on the one hand and the third unfolded stop on the other hand; and with cantilever arm in the unfolded state it abuts all three unfolded stops. Two additional stops rigidly connected with satellite are provided for guide element, on which cantilever arm rests in the folded state.

  • Patent number: 5760349
Abstract: An acoustic absorber is made of a pot-shaped lower part with a pot bottom and side wall as well as an upper part having a horn. The horn projects into the bottom part and tapers in the direction of the pot bottom. Undesired noise is effectively reduced by the absorber. A relatively broadband, and at a given size, a relatively low-frequency absorption effect is achieved that is capable of protecting human hearing from injury or reducing the impact of noise such as on technical equipment and components.

  • Patent number: 5670758
Abstract: By means of this acoustic protection it is possible to protect the payloads of expandable launch vehicles effectively against noise emissions from the rocket propulsion system which result in damage of the payloads. For this purpose acoustic absorbers (8) tuned to a defined frequency range are provided and are arranged in foamed plastic mats (7) disposed on the insides (6) of the payload fairing (1). The acoustic absorbers (8) are composed of a cup-shaped lower part (12) and an upper part (13) having a horn (18). The horn (8) tapers in a curved-conical manner from a larger diameter (D.sub.m) to a smaller diameter (D.sub.t) and projects into the lower part (12) by a defined distance (a) from a bottom (14) thereof. Slits (21) for the dissipation of the directed flow energy occurring in the horn (18) are disposed in the wall of the horn in the area of the smaller diameter (D.sub.t).
