  • Patent number: 3959084
Abstract: Upon discharge from a coke oven, highly heated coke is cooled by charging the hot coke to a shaft cooler wherein it is contacted with an inert cooling gas to a temperature of between 600.degree.-800.degree.F, the coke then being discharged through a pressure retention device and to a quench bunker by means of a feeding device, with the coke further cooled to a temperature of below 300.degree.F by water sprays, while preventing entrance of steam into the shaft cooler. The feed means and quench bunker are enclosed so as to prevent discharge to the atmosphere of steam produced on contact of the spray with the coke as well as particulate material carried thereby. The coke at below 300.degree.F is then fed to a conveyor for removal from the cooling area.

  • Patent number: 3958429
Abstract: This invention relates to a refrigeration system having an air-cooled condenser and, more particularly, to maintaining high-side pressure in the condenser at normal levels at low outdoor ambient temperature by the provision of a reversible cooling fan, cooling air being directed across the condenser in the conventional direction when the high-side pressure is above a predetermined level and diminishing the volume of cooling air flow across the condenser when the high-side pressure is below a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 3942263
Abstract: A method and apparatus is detailed for cooling hot bulk material disposed in gas-permeable cooling buckets which travel from a charging zone to a discharge zone, with the cooling buckets in communication with a plenum chamber having integral blower means for forcing cooling gas through the bulk material. The volume of cooling gas forced through the bulk material proximate the charging zone is substantially less than the volume of cooling air which is forced through the bulk material over the rest of the travel path. This results in a substantial reduction in the particulate emission from the bulk material. A cooling gas throttling means is disposed in the plenum chamber between the charging zone and the discharge zone for restricting the volume of cooling gas at specific areas along the travel path.
