  • Publication number: 20110061784
Abstract: Mattresses and methods for manufacturing mattresses that have a flame resistant panel, such as a flame resistant border panel. The systems and methods include mattresses that have a flame resistant panel that, in certain embodiments, includes a fire barrier layer made of a batting material and being disposed over a thermoplastic fire barrier layer. The first and second fire barrier layers provide a fire barrier that reduces the transfer of oxygen to the mattress core, thereby reducing the presence of oxygen, which is needed to support combustion of the padding material. Additionally, the invention encompasses methods for manufacturing mattresses.

  • Publication number: 20110041252
Abstract: Systems and methods include a spring-coil assembly having non-linear load-deflection characteristics that are substantially similar to foam. In particular, the systems and methods described herein include a first set of encased springs that are in a partially compressed state and a second set of shorter springs. These two sets of springs may be arranged in alternating rows such that the resulting spring-coil assembly displays non-linear load-deflection characteristics similar to foam.

  • Publication number: 20110031665
Abstract: The mattress assemblies have an array of springs extending from a sheet. Each spring in the array may be manufactured by choosing a position for the spring, cutting a profile of the sheet spring in the sheet, peeling back or bending the profile or tab of the sheet, and shaping the profile to form the sheet spring. The array of springs may be formed from creating a plurality of such springs along rows and columns. In certain embodiments, multiple sheets may be stacked to form the sheet spring array.

  • Publication number: 20100263130
Abstract: A mattress includes reduced-firmness materials along a central region thereof in order to mitigate the occurrence of a central ridge following repeated use of the mattress as a sleeping surface. An associated box spring may also, or instead, present a central region with reduced firmness. An adjustable member may be employed to controllably compensate for the development of a central ridge.

  • Patent number: 7814594
Abstract: A one-sided mattress construction includes a spring assembly with asymmetric spring coils. Only the bottom portion of each spring coil is attached, either to adjacent spring coils or to a bottom surface of the mattress. The top portion of each spring may have a narrowing taper that permits the top to move independent of other adjacent springs.

  • Publication number: 20100180416
Abstract: Mattresses and methods for processing a flexible foam material for use in a mattress to provide a mattress foam material that has more consistent firmness over time and area. The methods include pre-conditioning the foam pad or mattress by applying a force across a substantial portion of a major surface of the mattress to compress or stretch the height of the foam, the length of the foam, and/or the width of the foam to break or open closed cells. In certain embodiments, the force is applied by repeatedly pressing a platen against the foam pad or placing the foam pad between one or more rollers.

  • Publication number: 20100175197
Abstract: A stiffening system for the perimeter edges of a foam core mattress comprising a coil spring (or other spring-based) structure disposed along one or more perimeter edges (e.g., one or both side edges, the foot, the head, or a combinations thereof including the foot and both side edges) of a mattress having a foam sleeping area. The perimeter spring structure is rectangular or square in cross-section and provides sufficient stiffness for comfortable seating on the edges of the mattress and is joined to the foam core by planar fabric elements that span the joint between them and are attached to both. The sleep area provides the softness and other salutary effects of a foam sleeping surface while the stiffer spring perimeter element provides the rigidity need for comfortable seating and wear resistance.
