Abstract: The invention relates to a process for making a monofilament-like product from a precursor containing at least one strand of fibers made from ultra-high molar mass polyethylene, comprising a) exposing the precursor to a temperature within the melting point range of the polyethylene for a time sufficient to at least partly fuse adjacent fibers and b) simultaneously stretching the precursor, wherein the precursor is mechanically compressed during fusing. The monofilament-like product thus made has a smoother surface appearance, and improved abrasion resistance, for example a reduced tendency to pilling during use as fishing line, than known similar products; making it very suitable for use as fishing line and the like. The invention further relates to a monofilament-like product obtainable by said process, and to semi-finished and end-use products comprising said monofilament-like product.

Abstract: The invention provides a manual or automated method for eliminating or minimizing retention time shifts in comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (abbreviated GCxGC). Under nominal identical conditions (identical column-set specifications and GCxGC oven temperature programming), the invention allows one to reproduce the two-dimensional retention times from one column-set to another, from one GCxGC to another or from one column outlet pressure to another. A procedure is described to manually or automatically adjust the head pressure of the primary column and the (effective) secondary column length to compensate for the two-dimensional retention time differences.

Abstract: Block copolymer having improved compression set comprising 40-98 wt-% soft segment, 1.9-20 wt-% hard segment, and 0.05-3 wt-% monofunctional ionic endgroups. The incorporation of ionomers into diisocyanate-based thermoplastic polyurethane materials greatly improves compression set with little impact on the overall TPU formulation. A typical formulation for making the block copolymer contains 84.2% polydimethylsiloxane, 12.9% diisocyanate, 2.9% diamine chain extender, 0.15% sodium 2-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]ethylsulfonate, and 0.05% isethionic acid. The polymeric material may be configured, for instance, as a contact lens, prosthetic spinal nucleus, orthopedic bearing surface, gasket, or sealant.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a new method for a safe transport of ethyne in form of ?-alkynols as precursors for ethyne. The new method comprises three steps. In a first step the synthesis of the ?-alkynol(s) is performed by reacting ethyne with (a) carbonyl compound(s). The second step comprises the transport of the resulting ?-alkynol(s) in a safe manner, whereas the safety requirements for this transport are not as high as for ethyne because ?-alkynol(s) are normally classified for transportation as hazardous class 3. In the third step the ?-alkynol(s) can be cleaved and the ethyne and the carbonyl compound(s) can be obtained in the cleavage reaction and can be separated to yield pure products for further applications.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of an object, curved in one or more directions, from a package of at least one stacked ply containing polymeric fibers by the deforming thereof at elevated temperature, the process comprising imposing on the fibres a tensile stress at a temperature lying between the melting point of the fibers at the imposed tensile stress and 20° C. below the melting point, which tensile stress is high enough for the fibers to be drawn. This process allows objects, curved in one or more directions, to be produced from flat fiber plies without appreciable wrinkling using even fiber plies with low internal and/or mutual deformability and without material being drawn into the die in a controlled manner. The invention also relates to an object, curved in one or more directions, obtainable by the process according to the invention.
Abstract: We describe a method for purifying chymosin comprising providing an aqueous liquid sample containing chymosin and a separation medium comprising a base matrix and a plurality of firmly attached ligands that are capable of binding to chymosin, contacting the matrix with the sample under conditions permitting binding of chymosin to the matrix, and desorbing chymosin from the matrix. The characterizing feature is that the matrix is hydrophilic and that the ligands in the plurality of ligands are hydrocarbon groups in which all carbon atoms are sp3-hybridised, possibly with an ether oxygen or a thioether sulphur inserted between two carbon atoms at one or more positions in at least one of the hydrocarbon groups, and possibly a hydroxy group replacing a hydrogen atom at one or more positions in at least one of the hydrocarbon groups.
