Abstract: Process of preparing a not discolored p-nitrobenzoic acid by oxidation of p-nitrotoluene with oxygen, which comprises contacting the oxygen with the p-nitrotoluene in an acetic acid reaction medium and in the presence of a cobalt-containing and bromine-containing catalyst at a temperature of 80.degree. to 150.degree. C. The cobalt is present as a cobalt salt in the amount of 0.01 to 0.1 moles per mole of p-nitrotoluene, and the amount of acetic acid is 3 to 15 moles per mole p-nitrotoluene.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of a thermostable polyester which is insoluble in tetrachloroethane and consists of about 40 to 200 units, said polyester having units of the formula ##STR1## combined with units of the formula ##STR2## wherein Ph is ##STR3## AND BOTH R radicals are methyl on some units and both R radicals are phenyl on the balance of the units, said methyl units comprising 5-30 mole percent of the total R-containing units which comprises heating and condensing in the absence of a catalyst 4,4'-dihydroxytetraphenylmethane having a melting point of at least 295.degree. C together with 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane and terephthalic or isophthalic acid dichloride until there is prepared said polyester which is insoluble in tetrachlorethane.
Abstract: An installation for reducing suction forces on a flat or slightly inclined roof structure including disturbing or interfering elements or baffles arranged in the zone of the roof corners. The disturbing or interfering elements or baffles may be provided with either vertically or horizontally extending bars or may include a plurality of perforations or holes disposed in a plate member. Furthermore, the disturbing element or baffle may have a bracket-like configuration or consist of a wind guiding device of a snowplow shape.
Abstract: Porous silicic acid having a specific surface of about 50 to 1000 m.sup.2 /g and having an anion content below the chemically determinable limit of detection is made by hydrolyzing methyl or ethyl silicate or polymethyl or polyethyl silicate with about 70 to 120% of the stoichiometric amount of water with moderate stirring.Hydrolysis activators such as acids or bases may be present as well as alcoholates of oxides of transition metals which then appear in the end product. Alcohol may also be present to facilitate hydrolysis.The products are characterized by marked purity and their specific surface can be closely and reproducibly controlled.
Abstract: A method of deacetylation of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers to produce the corresponding olefinicaly unsaturated, linear polymers. The ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers are deacetylated under a vacuum of less than about 50 Torr, by splitting acetic acid from the copolymers, and while continuously stirring the copolymers.

Abstract: A process for preparing a chloromethyl-tetrachlorobenzene which comprises the steps of:A. contacting a xylene in a chlorine resistant solvent with 0.5 to 2, preferably 1 to 2 weight percent of FeCl.sub.3, based upon the weight of said xylene, at a temperature of 20 to 70.degree. C in the absence of light in a vessel having a vapor space over the level of the xylene solution.B. introducing into said vapor space chlorine and passing the same over said solution while strongly agitating the solution, said chlorine being introduced such that an excess pressure of 0.01 to 1 atmosphere exists over said solution;C. maintaining said solution at said temperature of 20 to 70.degree. C for a period of time at least 0.5 hours, preferably between 3 and 6 hours;D. thereafter directing energy-rich light at said vapor space while adding chlorine into said vapor space and maintaining the excess pressure over said solution at 0.01 to 1 atmosphere while maintaining the solution at a temperature of 50.degree. to 80.degree.
Abstract: A hollow container having two chambers separated by a diaphragm. A flowable explosive is carried in one chamber and an incompressible fluid is forced into the other chamber as needed, thereby flexing the diaphragm and forcing out the explosive into a dispensing hose. The dispensing hose includes a nozzle with a seal for placing the explosive in a bore hole. The explosive being dispensed can be accurately metered.
