  • Patent number: 6063343
Abstract: A compact, efficient reactor for the photocatalyzed conversion of contaminants in a fluid stream. The reactor includes a photocatalyst disposed on a support structure with a light source in optical proximity to the support structure to activate the photocatalyst. In one embodiment of the invention, the support structure includes multiple non-intersecting fins oriented parallel to the general flow direction of the fluid stream to provide a reactor with low pressure drop and adequate mass transfer of the contaminant to the photocatalyst disposed on the surface of the fins. The light source includes one or more lamps that may penetrate the fins to provide efficient illumination of the photocatalyst. The fins may be flat or pleated. In an alternative embodiment, the fins are pleated and composed of a porous material. These fins are oriented so that the fluid stream flows through the fins.

  • Patent number: 6064787
Abstract: A digital optical switch includes an input waveguide connected to a Y-shaped branching waveguide having two legs, each of the legs being connected to an output waveguide. Each output waveguide forms one waveguide of a directional coupler, the other waveguide of which has its output dissipated into the substrate. Electrodes are connected to voltage sources such that the switch is operative between two states. In the first state, transmission of optical energy is enhanced between the input waveguide and the first output waveguide and inhibited between the input waveguide and the second output waveguide. Coupling between the first output waveguide and the other waveguide of its respective directional coupler is inhibited and coupling between the second output waveguide and the other waveguide of its respective directional coupler is enhanced.

  • Patent number: 6061722
Abstract: A system and method of measuring network performance and determining hardware characteristics without interference with normal network operations. Several indicators of computer and network performance are measured in order to determine whether a user's network communication is sufficient for desired operations, and in order to guide the user to the best zone or server for optimal performance. The system and method take into account factors such as latency; bandwidth; CPU performance; memory size of the client computer; and presence of other background or concurrent processes on the client computer. Where applicable, performance tests are repeated over a period of time in order to better estimate the trends and to better predict changes in performance characteristics over time.
