Abstract: An ink/textile combination is provided wherein the ink contains an aqueous carrier, a pigment and a polymer having acid, base, epoxy or hydroxy functional moieties and the textile contains hydroxyl, amine, amido or carboxyl groups and either an organometallic crosslinking agent or an isocyanate crosslinking agent, and wherein upon exposure of the printed image to an external energy source, the crosslinking agent will react with the textile and the polymer in the ink to produce images having improved durability, water-fastness and wash-fastness.
Abstract: A method for mold heater startup and sequencing detects the heater zones associated with greater mass and allows them to heat up before zones of lesser mass, thereby reducing wear of the associated mechanical components and minimizing degradation of plastic material. The zones of smaller mass are kept at minimal temperatures until the zones with greater mass reach a set point. The system is capable of detecting multiple levels of thermal load and provides appropriate sequential startup of the identified thermal loads. The operator may also manually program the system to override certain automated sequences in order to ensure an optimal startup sequence. The sequencing of power application to large heaters also minimizes the peak current draw of the system.
Abstract: An improved process for applying a treating agent in the form of a foam to fibrous material wherein the improvement comprises applying foam having a blow ratio of from about 2:1 to about 6:1 using equipment designed for the application of liquid treating agents is disclosed.
Abstract: A method for performing real time, homogeneous assay of a target nucleic acid comprising annealing a labeled, ribo-oligonucleotide probe to the target DNA sequence and degrading a portion of the probe with RNase H to release labeled fragments. Sequential measurements of the released fragments permits kinetic characterization of the presence of the target sequence. Preferably, the assay is integrated into a polymerase chain reaction so that target amplification can be detected in real time.

Abstract: Ceramic matrix composites (CMC) of high density, preferably of the type SiC/SiC, are provided by a production process based on the infiltration of ceramic fiber cloths with a polymeric precursor solution containing, as fillers, inert powders having size much lower than the mean distance among the ceramic fibers which are used as basic material for the manufacturing of CMC, typically a nanometric granulometry. Such step is followed by the steps of hardening the cloths, pyrolysis of the polymer and repeated thickenings until the desired density is reached. A possible alternative process comprises a brief (<24 hours) treatment of infiltration of SiC from the vapor phase (CVI) with precursors and typical operative parameters for the deposition of silicon carbide followed by the repeated thickenings.

Abstract: A process of preparing new down-like clusters employs a method of point-bonding thermoplastic cut fibers in a stack of webs of carded fibers or continuous filaments in a tow, and then cutting and separating the resulting clusters which have an entirely different structure that is refluffable. Ultrasonic bonding has worked well as the bonding method, but other methods may prove useful.
Abstract: A cooling system for a vehicle. The cooling system has a radiator and a fan that draws cooling air through the radiator. The fan is recessed into the radiator such that the motor is substantially cooled by air that has not passed through said radiator. The radiator may be an interconnected spaced-apart bi-sectional radiator with the fan interposed therebetween, the radiator being shaped so as to feed air through the fan. The cooling system may have a variable speed pump at the outlet to the radiator.
Abstract: A method for converting the diester of a polyether polyol (e.g., the diacetate ester of polytetramethylene ether, PTMEA) to a corresponding dihydroxy polyether polyol (e.g., polytetramethylene ether glycol, PTMEG) involving reactive distillation wherein a diester of polyether polyol is fed to the top portion of the column along with an effective amount of at least one alkali metal oxide or alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide or alkoxide catalyst (e.g., sodium methoxide) and with a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkanol (e.g., methanol) while simultaneously adding to the bottom of the reactive distillation column hot alkanol vapor to sweep any alkanol ester formed by alkanolysis of the diester of polyether polyol upwardly. Such a process is useful for achieving high levels of conversion PTMEA to PTMEG on a commercial scale with the overhead from the column being amenable to azeotropic separation of the methyl acetate and recycle of the methanol.
Abstract: A hinge for use in inorganically filled composite materials is provided. The hinge has an inorganically filled structural matrix comprising a water-dispersable organic polymer binder, an aggregate material, and a fibrous material. The hinge allows inorganically filled materials to be bent along a line without breakage of the material. The hinge is preferably formed by scoring a formed sheet of inorganically filled material. The hinge is particularly useful in containers that require bending of various container parts, such as in food containers and boxes made from inorganically filled materials.
