Abstract: A display comprises spaced first and second electrodes, and a plurality of electrochromic nanoparticles disposed between the electrodes, each of the nanoparticles having an electron-rich state and an electron-depleted state, the two states differing in at least one optical characteristic. Upon injection of charge from one of the electrodes, the nanoparticles switch between their electron-rich and electron-depleted states, thus changing an optical characteristic of the display.
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for rapidly screening chemicals for their ability to sublime. The apparatus consists of a heated well plate, where the chemicals are deposited, and a cooled finger plate, holding fingers that penetrate each well. The two plates touch at only the perimeter in order to facilitate a vacuum seal and to reduce any thermal transfer.

Abstract: A method of braze bonding a stainless steel part to a titanium part by heating a component assembly comprised of the titanium part, the stainless steel part, and a very thin substantially pure nickel foil filler material placed between the two parts and heated at a temperature that is greater than the temperature of the eutectic formed between the titanium part and the substantially pure nickel filler material, but that is less than the melting point of either the filler material, the stainless steel part, or the titanium part. The component assembly is held in intimate contact at temperature in a non-reactive atmosphere for a sufficient time to develop a hermetic and strong bond between the stainless steel part and the titanium part. The bonded component assembly is optionally treated with acid to remove any residual free nickel and nickel salts, to assure a biocompatible component assembly for implantation in living tissue.

Abstract: Surface potentials of a number of patterned conducting and insulating self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were measured by scanning surface potential microscopy (SSPM) as part of a study in molecular electronics. Differences in surface potential were measured for insulating and conducting molecule SAMs on gold. The SAMs were patterned by microcontact printing.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of plexifilamentary film-fibril strands of synthetic fiber-forming polymer comprises the steps of generating a spin fluid and flash-spinning the spin fluid to form plexifilamentary film-fibril strands of the synthetic fiber-forming polymer. The spin fluid consists essentially of (a) 5 to 30 wt. % of a synthetic fiber-forming polymer, (b) a primary spin agent selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbons with 4 to 7 carbon atoms, and chlorinated, brominated and fluorinated compounds, and (c) a co-spin agent co-spin agent selected from the group consisting essentially of fluorinated organic compounds containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms and a double bond, and having an atmospheric boiling point of less than 100° C. The co-spin agent is present in the spin fluid in an amount sufficient to raise the cloud point pressure of the spin fluid by at least 50 pounds per square inch (345 kPa). A spin fluid used in the process of the invention is also provided.

Abstract: A USB drive mass storage device mainly includes a housing having a predetermined size, in which an optical fingerprint identification system is mounted for use with the USB drive. A printed circuit board (PCB) is located on an inner bottom of the housing with a universal serial bus (USB) plug projected from a front end of the housing. The optical fingerprint identification system includes an image sensing element and an optical prism located across front and rear ends, respectively, of the PCB, so that a space above the PCB provides an optical path for the optical fingerprint identification system. The housing is provided at a rear end with a pivotally connected rear cover to enable easy protection of and access to a fingerprint surface on the optical prism.
Abstract: This invention pertains to a compound of Formula I, its N-oxide or an agriculturally suitable salt of the compound (Formula I) wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 are as defined in the disclosure.
Abstract: A control is provided for switching on and off two heating devices of a hob forming a hotplate. In cyclic manner the continuous energy or power generation level can be adjusted by an energy control device. A temperature limiter monitors a maximum temperature via the first heating device, but not via the second heating device. The energy control device controls the first heating device directly or switches the same. The temperature limiter trips a power relay in order to switch the second heating device simultaneously with the first heating device.

Abstract: A device that is used for the automatic release, without any manual effort, of the steering system in a motor vehicle comprising electric power steering and a locking mechanism which acts on the steering column or on another part of the steering system. A controller, which is connected to an electric assist motor, receives signals from at least one vehicle status and/or initiating event detector and controls the motor in order to rotate the steering column or move another part of the steering system until the torque or stress on the locking mechanism is cancelled or reduced to almost zero, thereby enabling said mechanism to be released. The control of the motor is automatically interrupted at the end of a pre-determined period of time if the mechanism has not been released.
Abstract: A lube oil composition is disclosed which comprises poly(trimethylene-ethylene ether) glycol and at least one lube oil additive. The base stock can be optionally mixed with other base stocks. Preferably, the composition is used as hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, heat transfer fluid, compressor lubricant, textile and calender lubricant, metalworking fluid, refrigeration lubricant, two-cycle engine lubricant or crankcase lubricant.
Abstract: A radiation transmitting or sensing element is placed in a generally elongated holder of resilient material so that, if it is distorted by an accidental impact or otherwise, it will automatically re-orient itself when the intruding force is released. The invention is especially useful in safety accessories for automatic overhead doors, garages, and the like.
Abstract: A user of a computer aided design (CAD) system graphically places fire alarm appliances, such as smoke detectors and sirens, in a drawing area. After elements are placed and physical paths are determined, a series of electrical circuit connections between alarm source elements and alarm appliance elements are determined. Labels for alarm system device are automatically generated and automatically resequenced. Riser details may be generated in multiple formats. The system also allows standard CAD drawings to be imported into the alarm CAD system. This feature includes a gravitate command which automatically connects unconnected wire paths to the nearest alarm appliance. Circuit requirements can be listed with either a base unit, an appliance, or both. When both the base unit and the corresponding appliance have circuit requirements listed, the circuits are combined into a single listing.

Abstract: A system and a method for supporting e-commerce and card present transactions in multiple currencies, in which the local currency of the purchaser is different from the local currency of the vendor, such that the exchange between the currencies is hedged at the time of sale of the product. The system and method enable the purchaser to receive a final price for the product before the transaction is performed. The system and method also provide a mechanism for the actual exchange between the currencies of the purchaser and of the vendor, such that the aspects of the transaction regarding payment are fully supported. Preferably, transactional hedging of the currency transactions is performed, in order to reduce the risk involved with predetermination of prices.
