  • Patent number: 5688895
Abstract: Disclosed herein are thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(ester-amides) containing repeat units derived from alipatic diamines and other monomers, such as aromatic diols, aromatic dicarboxylic acids, aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids, and optionally aliphatic diols. The polymers are particularly useful as films and in multilayer structures as barrier layers because of their relatively low permeability to various compounds.

  • Patent number: 5687644
Abstract: Apparatus for expelling air from between the sheets of stacks of superimposed sheets has a conveyor which advances successive stacks of a series of stacks along a horizontal first path from a stack assembling first station toward a second station. The conveyor employs a reciprocable carriage for one or more tongs which engage the front end portion of fresh stack at the first station and entrain the stack toward the second station. A roller is mounted in a conveyance for repeated movement with the conveyance along a downwardly sloping second path from a raised position above and away from the first path to a lowered position of engagement with successive stacks which are being advanced toward the second station.

  • Patent number: 5685180
Abstract: An anti-theft security arrangement for the steering column of a motor vehicle includes a clutch which is adapted to resist turning of the steering up to a certain torque but thereafter to slip to avoid damage to the parts while still making control of the vehicle impractical. The clutch is arranged on a parallel axis to the steering column and is connected to the column through a high-ratio gear train comprising a gear wheel fast with the steering column and a pinion fast with the clutch. It is engaged and disengaged by sliding the assembly of clutch and pinion into and out of mesh with the other gear wheel. The clutch includes a rotatable shaft with teeth engaging between spring steel rods so as to turn in a series of discrete jerks if the limiting torque is exceeded.

  • Patent number: 5686852
Abstract: A circuit arrangement for forming the square root of an input signal in at least one quadrant. The input signal is fed to the input of a first differential amplifier, the current outputs of which work on two diodes. The two outputs of the first differential amplifier are also connected to the inputs of a second differential amplifier, from one output of which there is a feedback via a diode to one of the outputs of the first differential amplifier. The collectors of the second differential amplifier work on current sources.

  • Patent number: 5686785
Abstract: An electron gun for producing a beam of electrons has an elongated, linear thermionic cathode and a focusing electrode. The opposite ends of the cathode are engaged by adjustable holders which enable the spatial separation between the cathode and focusing electrode to be easily varied. The focusing electrode is electrically isolated from the cathode whereby fine tuning of the electron beam may be accomplished by varying the potential difference between the focusing electrode and cathode.

  • Patent number: 5686849
Abstract: The circuit for clock signal extraction from a high speed data stream which allows a rapid attainment of the identity between the frequencies of the locally generated clock signal and of the data signal, even when such frequencies are very different. The circuit can easily be inserted into a more complex CMOS digital integrated circuit, it has low power dissipation and is capable of operating at bit rates exceeding 300 Mbit/s. The circuit has a main phase locked loop, which controls a voltage controlled oscillator by continually controlling its phase and a secondary loop, which allows the main loop to become locked, by causing the voltage controlled oscillator to oscillate at a frequency close to the operating frequency.
