Abstract: Road safety barrier includes a resistant part and one or two dampening parts for a lateral barrier or a traffic divider respectively. The resistant part of the wall type barrier may be rigidly connected to steel plates which are equally spaced and have been specifically conceived for increasing the resistance during an impact caused by a heavy vehicle. The plates have a slot for the passage of ductile screw anchors, allowing the initial displacement of the resistant part and its connection to the support. If provided, the ductile anchor parts are covered by the dampening part.

Abstract: A method for making an apodized Bragg grating in a photosensitive, planar, linear waveguide. A photosensitive, planar, linear waveguide is provided on a surface of a substrate. A patterned phase mask is placed between the waveguide and a laser beam. The waveguide is exposed through the phase mask to the laser beam wherein either the laser beam is moving at a substantially constant velocity with respect to the substrate and phase mask, or the substrate and phase mask are moving at a substantially constant velocity with respect to the laser beam. The beam has a smoothly varying intensity profile, and the exposure is conducted at an angle of more than 0° and less than 90° to the longitudinal axis of the waveguide under conditions sufficient to induce a modulation in the index of refraction of the waveguide and impart an apodized Bragg grating in the waveguide corresponding to the phase mask pattern.

Abstract: This invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding an enzyme involved in lipid biosynthesis. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the enzyme involved in lipid biosynthesis, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the enzyme involved in lipid biosynthesis in a transformed host cell.
Abstract: A programming system for controlling and/or altering an implantable device's operation using externally applied magnetic means, e.g., a permanent magnet or the like. Typically, such devices stimulate a neural pathway or muscle and/or block pain or muscle stimulation according to programmable settings, e.g., the amplitude, duration, frequency/repetition rates, etc., of stimulation pulses applied to the neural pathways/muscles. Preferably, once programmed from an external programmer, such implantable devices can operate “independently” using the externally provided programmed information. However, external programmers may be unavailable due to cost, size, or other constraints. Accordingly, embodiments of the present invention include a magnetic sensor, preferably a magnetoresistive, Hall effect, saturated core reactors, or the like, to sense an externally provided magnetic field. By externally applying magnetic fields in sequences of controlled polarities, durations, intensities, etc.

Abstract: Chemical reactions are carried out with molten fluoropolymer, most conveniently in an extruder, wherein the reaction zone in the extruder is isolated from the melting zone, and the molten fluoropolymer is subdivided in the reaction zone sufficiently that contact and reaction between the reactant and the molten fluoropolymer in the reaction zone is essentially free of mass transfer limitation, followed by devolatilization in isolation from the reaction zone, and cooling the devolatilized fluoropolymer.

The base has a pair of blocks which are spaced and installed at a wall. Each supporting portion is installed at each block having an upper slide path, a lower slide path and an outside slide path. The movable plate is a rectangular plate with a width corresponding to a distance between the two blocks. Each sliding portion is respectively corresponding to each supporting portion and is installed at the lateral side of the movable plate. Each sliding portion respectively passes through each supporting portion. The movable plate can be placed horizontally or vertically as desired. Therefore, it is space-efficient and convenient. Furthermore, the receiving plate supporting device can be assembled easily, and the structure of each component is easy and is cost-effective.
Abstract: A method of measuring the twist imparted to an optical fibre includes the steps of advancing the optical fibre in a predetermined direction and at a predetermined velocity, imparting to the optical fibre, during the step of advancing, a twist about its axis, measuring the diameter of the optical fibre during the step of advancing, to generate a time-based signal indicating the diameter, and processing this signal to find a value indicating the imparted twist. The step of processing includes the principal steps of transforming in the frequency domain the signal relating to the measurement of the diameter, calculating the power spectrum of the signal thus obtained, distinguishing in this power spectrum the signal peaks correlated with the imparted twist, determining the maximum frequency associated with these signal peaks, and dividing the value of this maximum frequency by the value of the velocity of advance of the fibre to find the value indicating the imparted twist.
