Abstract: An audio description of a television program, i.e., a sound bite, is reproduced simultaneously with the display of the program at a television receiver. Specifically, the sound bite is embedded in a television signal that contains audio component and a video component. The television signal is transmitted to a plurality of television receivers and intercepted at one of the receivers. The video component is displayed on a monitor and the audio component is reproduced. On command the sound bite is reproduced instead of the audio component. An audio description of a television program, i.e., a sound bite, is also reproduced simultaneously with the display of a program listing of the program at a television receiver. Specifically, when the program listing is marked with an on-screen cursor, the sound bite is reproduced.

Abstract: A rapid process for making transparent tints that match the color and tinting strength of a standard tint. The process involves the use of a faster and more accurate shading technique that utilizes the light transmittance properties of the tints in the wet over the visible spectrum and calculates therefrom the amount of components required to bring the tint within an acceptable match to the standard.

Abstract: A pressurized-fluid-operated actuator has multiple piston surfaces for providing increased output force. The actuator includes a stationary cylinder that contains a movable cylinder having multiple inner chambers separated by stationary inner pistons. The inner chambers are in fluid communication with extension and retraction ports provided in the stationary cylinder wall. Introduction of pressurized fluid into one port causes the fluid pressure to act on “n” piston surface(s) to retract the movable cylinder. Introduction of pressurized fluid into the other port causes the fluid pressure to act on “n+1” piston surfaces to provide an increased output force without increasing the diameters of the cylinders and without increasing the pressure of the fluid.

Abstract: An electrophoretic display comprises a fluid and a plurality of nanoparticles having diameters substantially less the wavelengths of visible light such that, when the nanoparticles are in a dispersed state and uniformly dispersed throughout the fluid, the fluid presents a first optical characteristic, but when the nanoparticles are in an aggregated state in which they are gathered into aggregates substantially larger than the individual nanoparticles, the fluid presents a second optical characteristic different from the first optical characteristic. The electrophoretic display further comprises at least one electrode arranged to apply an electric field to the nanoparticle-containing fluid and thereby move the nanoparticles between their dispersed and aggregated states. Various compound particles comprising multiple nanoparticles, alone or in combination with larger objects, and processes for the preparation of such compound particles, are also described.

Abstract: Provided is a selective hydrogenation process for producing aminonitriles by contacting the corresponding dinitriles with a hydrogen-containing fluid in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, a solvent and tetraalkylammonium hydroxide and/or tetraalkylphosphonium hydroxide additive.
Abstract: This invention relates to low-tack thin-walled articles comprising a polyurethane elastomer, for example surgical gloves, clean-room gloves, condoms, and the like. More particularly, the invention relates to such elastomeric articles containing specific amounts of molecular sieve.
Abstract: Fluorinated carboxylic acid, used as a surfactant in fluoropolymerization in aqueous media, can be recovered by scrubbing from the exhaust gas of the dryer during polymer drying and, after concentration and treatment with alumina, directly reused in fluoropolymerization in aqueous media.
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for crosslinking copolymers of acrylic esters by converting some of the ester groups to ester or amide groups which contain unsaturation, and then sulfur or peroxide curing the resulting polymers. The resulting crosslinked polymers often have excellent vulcanizate properties, and are useful especially in elastomeric form as seals and gasket.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for cooling an optical fiber during the drawing process of said fiber.
In particular the present method for cooling an optical fiber comprises flowing a cooling gas onto the optical fiber wherein the flow direction of the cooling gas is substantially transversal with respect the longitudinal axis of the fiber.
It has been found that by employing a flow of cooling gas being substantially transversal to the longitudinal axis of the drawn fiber, the cooling efficiency of the fiber may be substantially improved.
Abstract: An anilox roller base comprised of a carbon fiber composite cylinder over which a metal sleeve is fitted. Metal journals, journal headers, or end caps are installed in the anilox roller base ends. A ceramic coating is added to the metal sleeve external surface and subsequently machined to the precise dimensions required of an anilox roller.
Abstract: The present invention relates to topical compositions useful in enhancing lipid synthesis in skin comprising an effective amount of cafestol or kahweol, or derivative thereof, in combination with a pharmaceutically or cosmetically acceptable carrier. Such compositions are useful in treatment or prevention of dry skin and conditions in which the skin's lipid barrier is defective or damaged.
Abstract: Method for making caprolactam from 6-aminocapronitrile that contains greater than 500 ppm tetrahydroazepine and its derivatives (THA) in which ammonia and water are removed from crude caprolactam in a single separation step and then THA is removed from the resulting caprolactam melt.
Abstract: An angle type power screwdriver having a housing comprising a main housing is disclosed, within which a drive, a reduction gear coupled therewith and a spindle driven thereby are received. An angle head comprising a tool spindle arranged at an angle to the spindle and driven thereby for driving a tool comprises an angle head housing that is connected to the main housing via an adjusting device angularly adjustable. The reduction gear comprises a reaction part receiving a reaction moment with respect to the spindle, the angle head housing being connected with the reaction part for common rotation therewith and being coupled to the drive via the adjusting device.
Abstract: The invention relates to the combinatorial approaches to the preparation of novel polymer-supported heteroatom bidentate (PN, PO, PS) ligand libraries and the corresponding free compounds after cleavage from the supports. These compounds are useful as novel ligands in the preparation of metal-containing catalysts.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the generation and use of a cellular array or a cellular array in combination with other genome-registered arrays (an array of arrays) for the determination of gene function and/or perturbation mode of action. Each cellular array consists of a number of microbial strains. Each strain comprises one reporter gene fusion made up of a gene or gene fragment operably linked to a reporter gene. Each gene or gene fragment has been “registered” or mapped to a specific location in the genome of the organism. The genome-registered collection of the invention may be used to determine alterations in gene expression under a variety of conditions. Such collections are amenable to rapid assay and may be used to confirm, correct or augment data generated from DNA micro array technology.
