Abstract: The present invention relates to honeycomb structures having cell walls of increased thickness wherein multiple layers of cell wall material are not bonded together except on two opposite cell wall sides. The invention also includes a process for making such honeycomb structures.
Abstract: Photoresists and associated processes for microlithography in the extreme, far, and near UV are disclosed. The photoresists in some embodiments comprise (a) a fluorine-containing copolymer comprising a repeat unit derived from at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound characterized in that at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound is polycyclic and at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound contains at least one fluorine atom covalently attached to an ethylenically unsaturated carbon atom; and (b) at least one photoactive component.

Abstract: The preparation and use of nucleic acid fragments encoding plant fatty acid modifying enzymes associated with modification of the delta-9 position of fatty acids, in particular, formation of conjugated double bonds are disclosed. Chimeric genes incorporating such nucleic acid fragments and suitable regulatory sequences can be used to create transgenic plants having altered lipid profiles. The preparation and use of nucleic acid fragments encoding plant fatty acid modifying enzymes associated with formation of a trans delta-12 double bond also are disclosed. Chimeric genes incorporating such nucleic acid fragments and suitable regulatory sequences can be used to create transgenic plants having altered lipid profiles.

Abstract: A coupling having an integral orifice plate engages upstream and downstream segments of a landfill piping system. Upstream and downstream ports are respectively formed through the walls of the coupling adjacent the orifice plate. The difference in pressure at the ports is correlated to a flow rate through the pipe. Sensor fittings are threadably engaged with the ports, and to support the threadable engagement, the wall of the coupling through which the ports are formed has a thickness of at least around one-half inch.

Abstract: An optical transmission fiber has a refractive index profile with an area of increased index of refraction at the inner core of the fiber, an annular region positioned radially outward from the inner core with an index of refraction exceeding the index of the inner core, and at least a low dopant content region in a cross-sectional region between the inner core and the annular region. A low loss cladding layer surrounds the core region. The optical transmission fiber with this segmented core profile provides a high effective area, low non-linearity coefficient, nonzero dispersion, and relatively flat dispersion slope.
Abstract: A synthetic polymer filament is characterized by a four-sided void that extends centrally and axially through the filament. Each apex of the void extends toward the approximate midpoint of one side of the exterior configuration of the filament. The four-sided void has a modification ratio in the range from about 1.2 to about 2.0 and occupies from about five percent 5% to about thirty percent 30% of the cross sectional area of the filament.
A spinneret plate for producing the thermoplastic synthetic polymer filament has a cluster of four orifices centered about a central point. Each orifice includes a generally isosceles triangle-shaped major portion from which extends a pair of legs, each leg of one orifice being spaced from the leg of an adjacent orifice to define a gap therebetween.
Abstract: An antenna beamformer is disclosed that uses controllable time delay elements distributed in a planar fractal feed network between the input port and multiple output ports. The use of time delay elements, rather than phase shifting elements, allows the beamformer to maintain a constant steering angle independent of frequencies over a broad range of frequencies. In addition, fewer control signals are used to control all of the time delay elements due to distributing the time delay elements throughout the fractal feed network, rather than grouping the delay elements near the output ports.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a hydroxy-substituted organic compound comprising decomposing an organic hydroperoxide, preferably a compound of the formula Ar—C(CH3)2O2H, wherein Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted mononuclear or polynuclear aromatic group. The decomposition is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising highly fluorinated polymer having sulfonic acid groups with the catalyst being in the form of particles of which at least about 20 weight % have a particle size less than about 300 &mgr;m. Cumene hydroperoxide can be decomposed in the process to phenol and acetone which can be reacted to form bisphenol A in the presence of the same catalyst that was used for the decomposition.

Abstract: The present invention provides a cardable fiber blend which forms a moldable fiber batt, the blend comprising fibers having a modulus of 550 g/denier or more with fibers of a thermoplastic polymer wherein the high modulus polymer fibers are all uncrimped fibers or a mixture of crimped and uncrimped fibers. The moldable batt is useful in making speaker cones.
