The power dissipation of at least one component to be protected is determined, the expected temperature increase is calculated using a thermal model. An estimated end temperature is determined using the expected temperature increase and an ambient temperature. The estimated end temperature is compared with a predefined temperature threshold value. Consumer loads are switched on or off depending on their priority. A device for carrying out the method is provided. The device includes a power meter, calculation unit storage unit, and switching unit for switching consumer loads The electrical system to which the device is assigned includes at least one consumer load and at least one component to be protected.
