  • Patent number: 4120555
Abstract: A connector-terminal assembly for passing electrical current through a furnace firewall. A one piece insulator fits through a hole in the firewall and is braced to the firewall by a single retainer clip. A connector suitable for high temperature use is slideably mounted in a hole centrally through the insulator and retained therein by the electrical terminals on either end thereof. The insulator is mounted in the firewall independently of the connector mounting in the insulator, and vice versa. The insulator is mounted to the firewall free of compressive stress along the connector axis and the connector is mounted in the insulator free of tensile stress along its axis to allow for heat expansion of both components.

  • Patent number: 4114061
Abstract: A brush cage for an electric motor wherein the brush sets are mounted on two assemblies. One assembly is mounted to the frame and the second assembly is mounted to a removable frame end plate, which when removed, provides access to the first assembly and commutator. Each assembly includes an electrically conductive ring upon which the brushes are mounted. The brushes are electrically interconnected through the ring upon which they are mounted. The rings are in a spaced relation to each other along the commutator rotational axis and are on substantially parallel planes which are perpendicular to that axis. The brushes on one ring fit between the brushes on the other ring so as to be disposed around the commutator in an inter-leafed pattern within the space between the two rings.

  • Patent number: 4113335
Abstract: This invention relates to a re-formable multiconductor flat, or ribbon, cable, which comprises a plurality of spaced insulated conductors, aligned in a predetermined, laterally spaced, pattern along a single sheet or film of plastic, the single sheet of plastic being only intermittently bonded to the laterally spaced conductors. The intermittent bonding pattern preferably utilized is one that results in transverse, peelably bonded, areas extending across the width of the entire cable alternating with transverse unbonded areas which also extend across the width of the entire cable.

  • Patent number: 4110763
Abstract: A photocomposing machine having a cassette containing a continuous film tape loop. The loop rides on two rollers which stretch the loop when it is inserted on the photocomposing machine. The rollers are spool-shaped to avoid contact with the character containing portions of the tape. A lead plate, which is integral with the cassette, provides proper loop alignment and tension. The illuminating light from the photocomposing machine is directed through the tape and out of the cassette by means of a prism system that extends through the bottom of the cassette. The loop contains character identification and alignment markings which are illuminated through corresponding apertures in the lead plate.

  • Patent number: 4094284
Abstract: Exhaust gas is recirculated to an intake manifold of an engine by a shut-off valve and a fluidic amplifier for modulation in accordance with different engine parameters. The shut-off valve is normally biased to a closed position and it is opened to permit recirculation in response to a signal received from a fluidic NOR gate which operates in accordance with position of a carburetor throttle, engine speed and engine temperature. The fluidic amplifier includes a power jet chamber receiving a supply of exhaust and a vent chamber in fluid communication with a venturi disposed in the exhaust manifold, a receiver chamber and a pair of control jets. One of the control jets may be in fluid communication with the intake manifold or with a carburetor venturi. The other control jet may be open to atmospheric pressure compensated for the effect of changes in air density or engine speed.

  • Patent number: 4092866
Abstract: A container for a pressure gauge movement which employs a viewing window. The container includes a flange along the edge adjacent to the window which receives the window and a resilient window sealing gasket. A resilient collar is placed around the edge of the window which sandwiches the gasket between the window and flange as it retracts. The collar includes a split and two non-parallel surfaces. The split allows the collar to be expanded when placed around the flange and window. The surfaces define a groove to receive the edges and press the flange and window together around the gasket as the collar retracts. A ring is placed over the collar which contains a plurality of detents and a window contacting surface. The detents engage the collar and cause it to contract and also lock the ring and collar in place on the case. At the same time, the surface presses the window against the gasket.

  • Patent number: 4086888
Abstract: An electronic vacuum modulator is disclosed for controlling air flow to a throttle valve modulator mechanism for limiting the maximum speed of an engine and, optionally, for also limiting the maximum vehicle speed. An electric signal having a frequency proportional to engine speed is converted into an electric signal which smoothly and progressively controls a solenoid valve as the engine speed increases over a narrow range at a predetermined maximum engine speed. The valve is controlled such that the modulator mechanism progressively closes a carburetor throttle valve in the engine to limit the engine speed by limiting the available power. Optionally, a vehicle speed signal also is converted into an electronic signal which smoothly and progressively controls the solenoid valve as the vehicle speed increases over a narrow range at a predetermined maximum vehicle speed.

  • Patent number: 4076906
Abstract: A battery cell characterized by a plurality of cell plates housed in a container that includes a window adjacent to the edges of several plates. A triangular member of resilient material is attached at its base to the edge of at least one of the plates. The sides of the member contain two lands and the tip of the member contacts the window. The interface between the tip and the window is visible through the window as a single line. As the plate increases in size, the edges of the lands contact the window producing additional lines; the number of lines representing the gradual diminution in the cell life.

  • Patent number: 4063978
Abstract: An apparatus and method for assembling a sheet of storage battery separator material about a lead battery plate is disclosed. A battery plate is fed against the center of a flat sheet of battery separator material. The sheet is retained by guides above and below the line against which the battery plate is fed, so that as the plate is fed past the guides, the sheet is folded and enveloped about the somewhat narrower battery plate. As the enveloped plate continues to advance forward, it is engaged between pairs of opposed belt conveyors which take the battery and separator through a heating station. The adjacent inner edge surfaces of the folded separator are heat-sensitive, so that when the hot air and combustion gases at the heating station strike the adjacent inner edge surfaces, they become tacky.

  • Patent number: 4040406
Abstract: A pair of breaker contacts are opened and closed by the pivotal movement of a breaker lever carrying one of the breaker contacts for engagement with the other breaker contact which is stationary. The breaker lever is pivotally supported on an upright pivot post which is formed integrally with a cupshaped container constructed from an inexpensive plastic material, and the end of the pivot post is received in a reinforced opening of a cover member secured to the cup-shaped container so as to prevent the pivot post from being undesirably deflected during the pivotal movement of the breaker lever.

  • Patent number: 4027313
Abstract: A photocomposing machine and font strip therefor are described which allow type designers to have the flexibility to design typographical characters which are kerned. The photocomposing machine is able to automatically kern those characters which are designed to be kerned. The automatic kerning is accomplished by intentionally offsetting each character's placement on the font strip to the left with respect to the machine's aperture, and providing an optical system in the photocomposing machine which intentionally offsets the projection of the font strip through the aperture of the machine to the right, thereby cancelling the offset of unkerned characters. Kerned characters are placed to the right on the font strip in order to allow the machine's optical system offset to overlap the image of kerned characters on the space normally reserved for the next character.

  • Patent number: 3990417
Abstract: The timing of ignition pulses supplied to an engine is controlled in accordance with a plurality of different operating conditions of the engine to minimize undesirable exhaust pollutants. As the speed of the engine increases from a cranking speed toward an idling speed, the ignition pulses are produced in synchronism with reference timing signals indicating movement of a piston to a top dead center position in a combustion chamber, and upon further increases in engine speed the ignition pulses are produced in synchronism with advanced timing signals generated by an electronic advance means in accordance with the approximate instantaneous position of the piston in the combustion chamber and selected engine operating conditions. The control of the timing of the ignition pulses is transferred between the two different timing signals by a selector means operating in response to control signals indicative of engine speeds above or below a predetermined speed.
