  • Patent number: 8491357
Abstract: A crankshaft is machined by first securing it in first and second radially displaceable grippers of first and second holders rotatable about a common grinding axis and orienting the workpiece axis coaxial with the grinding axis. Then the crankshaft is released from the first gripper, and the second holder is rotated to align the first crankpin radially with the grinding axis. Subsequently the crankshaft is regripped by the first gripper and released by the second gripper and the second holder is rotated relative to the crankshaft until the second holder is aligned with its displacement direction lying in a common plane with the grinding axis and the displacement direction of the first gripper. Finally, both the grippers are shifted parallel to each other in their displacement directions to center the first crankpin on the grinding axis, and the crankshaft is about the grinding axis while machining the first crankpin.

  • Patent number: 8448550
Abstract: A machining apparatus has a frame and two generally parallel horizontal guides on the frame, one of which extends through at least one loading station and through at least one work station. A slide carrying a pair of spindles each capable of gripping a workpiece is shiftable between positions with the spindles aligned with the stations. A tool holder is shiftable on the other of the guides toward and away from the work station. Respective guides between each of the spindles and the slide allow vertical movement of the spindles on the slide. Actuators shift the slide horizontally on the one guide, shift the tool holder horizontally parallel to the slide on the other guide, and shift the spindles vertically on the slide.

  • Patent number: 8282322
Abstract: Race grooves and lobe outer surfaces of a constant-velocity race gear centered on a gear axis are finished by engaging a first groove of the race gear with a rotating groove-machining tool and relatively moving the race gear and rotating groove-machining tool arcuately to finish the first groove while holding the race gear against rotation about its gear axis. Then the first groove of the race gear is disengaged from the rotating groove-machining tool while holding the race gear against rotation about its gear axis. Then the race gear is rotated about its gear axis to align a second groove with the rotating groove-machining tool while engaging a first lobe outer surface with a rotating surface-machining tool to finish same. These steps are repeated in the same order to finish the second groove and a second lobe outer surface and so on until all the grooves and lobe outer surfaces of the race gear are finished.

  • Patent number: 7172495
Abstract: Teeth of a workpiece of a workpiece are finish-machined by first gauging shapes of the workpiece teeth and generating actual-value signals corresponding thereto. These actual-value signals are compared to set points representing desired tooth shapes, and the teeth of the workpiece are meshed with abrasive teeth of a honing tool and the tool and workpiece are relatively rotated while orienting them so as to remove material from workpiece teeth whose actual-value signals vary from the respective set points. The steps of gauging, comparing, and removing material are then repeated until the actual-value signals are substantially equal to the set points.

  • Patent number: 7096563
Abstract: A grab picks up a hollow workpiece and displaces it to a machining station where, while the workpiece is held in the grab, a tool is engaged from outside with a first surface of the workpiece to finish the first surface. Then the workpiece is reoriented by the grab and engaged by a tool with a second surface of the workpiece to finish the second surface. Another tool is fitted through a large-diameter hole of the workpiece and positioned inside the workpiece adjacent a small-diameter hole and a drive spindle is coupled through the small-diameter hole to the other tool to machine an inner surface of the workpiece adjacent the small-diameter hole. These steps are then repeated to finish another interior surface of the workpiece adjacent another small-diameter hole.
