  • Patent number: 4412842
Abstract: Coal is beneficiated by slurrying coal particles of less than 200 microns in diameter with water. The slurry is cavitated with intense sonic agitation at a level of at least 15 joules/cm.sup.2. While the slurry is in the cavitated state, impurities and water are gravitationally separated from the slurry to produce a coal/water mixture having up to 40 percent by weight water, and preferably, 20 to 35 percent water with the balance coal.

  • Patent number: 4310981
Abstract: A double barreled firearm which may be of the over and under configuration. A removable trigger group or unit is releasably secured to the bottom of the receiver. A selector switch or lever is provided forward of the trigger which cooperates with the trigger unit whereby a selection can be made to fire either barrel in response to the first pull of the trigger with the other barrel capable of being fired immediately in response to the second pull of the trigger. The trigger carries a laterally movable transfer block or member which is adjusted by the selector lever. The transfer block or member has pivoted to it the sear actuator block. A hammer pilot spring rod is provided for each hammer and the ends of these pilot rods cooperate with an extension on the sear actuator block. The sear actuator block is moved laterally to one side, or the other, to engage the sear that is selected to be fired in response to the first pull of the trigger.

  • Patent number: 4293530
Abstract: The invention concerns the recovery of non-ferrous metals, such as gold, uranium or the like from iron oxide containing calcines which have the non-ferrous metal present in solid solution and/or encapsulated within the iron oxide. The calcine is reacted, while stirring vigorously, with sulphuric acid or another strong inorganic acid to cause the iron to form the ferric salt. The material obtained is mixed with water and the liquid and solid phases are separated from each other. The non-ferrous metal is then obtained from at least one of these phases by leaching, or the like.

  • Patent number: 4287000
Abstract: A method of salt grinding of pigments wherein the material to be ground is milled with a salt, an organic conditioner, and larger particles such as balls, nails, or in a strong kneader for comminuting the pigment to the desired state of subdivision. This grinding mass is made into a smooth flowing suspension by addition of more organic conditioning agent rather than solvents, as heretofore. The suspension is then passed through a decanter type centrifuge resulting in a sediment fraction containing most of the salt, some pigment, and some organic conditioning agent, and a liquid fraction containing most of the pigment, some salt and conditioning agent. The sediment portion is returned to the grinding mechanism where it is combined with a new batch of unmilled pigment for a subsequent milling cycle, while the pigment is separated by filtration from the liquid portion after some addition of water and flocculating agents. The filtration and wash liquors are combined.

  • Patent number: 4245405
Abstract: A machine for teaching students to read is equipped with a visual display, a manual keyboard for entering alphabet letter responses, correctness and incorrectness indicators of display responses, and conditioning means for initiating particular grammar characteristic sequences to be practiced. The machine also includes a repertoire of words and letter combinations corresponding to word roots encoded in an electronic form and stored in digital memory. A word set is assembled in response to an instruction from the conditioning means concerning the word structure characteristic sequence to be practiced. Words or word roots are selected at random from the assembled word set for display or partial display. The student, through the keyboard,is thereby able to identify particular vowels and consonants, long and short vowel sounds, soft and hard consonant sounds, determine the number of syllables in a word, identify misspelled words, supply missing letters, and identify words as to their grammatical parts of speech.

  • Patent number: 4244218
Abstract: A fluid measuring device comprises a body suspended by a force transmission means within a container for receiving the fluid to be measured. The weight of the body is counterbalanced by a tare weight acting on a lever connected to the force transmission means. A gyroscopic load cell measures the vertical force exerted on the body by the fluid in the container and is calibrated so that a load cell display expresses the quantity of fluid received discharged or existing in the container as its volume or its weight. Servo-operable inlet and outlet valves to the container can be controlled by signals from the load cell whereby the device will meter predetermined quantities of the fluid.

  • Patent number: 4237459
Abstract: An electronically operated character display having discrete and separate illuminable elements is divided into upper, central and lower sections, each section having a plurality of illuminable elements. The elements are actuated in response to electronic codes corresponding to alphabet characters. Codes for lower case characters having ascending portions enable combinations of illuminable elements in the central and upper sections of the character display. Code for lower case characters having descending portions actuate combinations of elements in the central and lower sections, while codes for lower case characters having neither ascenders or descenders actuate combinations of elements in the central section.

  • Patent number: 4215613
Abstract: A kerfless slitter, capable of cutting various materials without generating chips or sawdust. The slitter includes a circular blade having a plurality of teeth spaced about its outer periphery and which contains a knife-edge centered along the mid plane of the blade in regard to its thickness. In practice, the blade is rotated at a peripheral speed that is equal to the linear speed of the work acted upon whereby each tooth is advanced along a cycloidal path of travel in reference to the work. Each tooth is arranged to enter the work ahead of the cutting line established by the teeth that have previously penetrated the work so that the cut is increased in length and in depth by means of a series of short slits.

  • Patent number: 4159830
Abstract: A wheel truck for a steerable platform such as a skateboard. The wheel truck includes a base frame mounted below the platform and carrying a vertical support shaft and downwardly inclined steering shaft. An axletree upon which wheels are mounted is carried from the frame by resilient support means. The support means includes pairs of elastomeric bushings mounted about both of the support and steering shafts. The bushings are seated in sockets formed in the axletree for positioning the latter with respect to the frame. Fasteners are provided to secure the bushings on the shaft. The fasteners are adapted to change the steering response or to vary angular orientation of the axletree for purposes of changing the turning radius.

  • Patent number: 4095463
Abstract: A dynamometer cell consists of a gyroscope of which the precessional motion induced by the force to be measured is a measure of that force. In order to apply the force to a lever of which one end is movably mounted on an inner gyroscope gimbal while the other end is similarly mounted on an outer gyroscope gimbal a vertically rotatably mounted suspension member is provided. The non-precessing end of this suspension member includes a support member to which a load lever is hingedly attached and to which lever the force to be measured is directly or indirectly applied. With the object of avoiding or at least reducing undesirable oscillations of the lever the support member consists of at least two parts adapted to be mutually mobile by means of bearing members provided therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4089124
Abstract: Apparatus for training pupils in arithmetic present arithmetic problems at least some of which call for an answer having more than one digit. The answer is received from the pupil in a digit-by-digit manner. In the case of a two-digit answer, the correctness of the first digit is determined prior to the receipt of the second digit of the particular answer. Any incorrectness of the first digit is indicated to the pupil and the correct answer is also displayed to the pupil before receipt of the second digit from him.
