  • Patent number: 4716003
Abstract: Apparatus for reducing the waste neck area in a mold of vinyl cast articles such as automotive arm rests, head rests and parts of similar construction includes a powder box of gellable material having a supply spout with its exposed outer surface area covered by a liner of heat insulating material; a waste inlet neck on a heated, machined nickel mold is sealed by the liner when the powder box is joined to the mold. The powder box spout is at room temperature and shields the inlet neck to prevent gel build-up on the inlet neck to effect considerable cost by both a reduction in waste deposits of gel and a reduction in labor required to trim a waste area on the mold. To obtain the coating, the mold is coated with powdered vinyl (hereinafter gellable material) by casting from the powder box to the mold and the excess material is removed from the mold by dumping it from the mold into the powder box.

  • Patent number: 4714575
Abstract: A polyurethane RIM method has two mixheads. Reactants are brought to each mixhead and are supplied as separate streams to two spaced cavities in a mold having a pre-formed porous mat separating the two cavities. One stream contains an isocyanate, polyol, chain extender and crosslinker selected to have a very low viscosity and which reacts to produce a high modulus armature or load bearing member. The other stream contains a polyol and isocyanate with additives that have relatively high viscosity to produce a semi-rigid polyurethane foam. At each mixhead the proportions of ingredients are controlled to give a desired isocyanate index to control the flex modulus and other properties of the loading bearing member and foam molded components of the product. The low viscosity material penetrates the porous mat to reinforce it and the porosity of the mat prevents the high viscosity material from entering the armature cavity so as to reduce the load capacity of the finished product.

  • Patent number: 4712471
Abstract: A hydraulic actuator with reduced interior volume includes a locking mechanism engageable with the main ram of the actuator to hold it in a fully retracted position without backlash. The locking mechanism comprises three locking jaws that move synchronously in a radial direction between lock or unlock position. Each of the jaws engage a groove cut into a rod adjacent the piston head of the main ram; the jaws are cammed into a locking position by a conical sleeve actuated by hydraulic pressure under the control of the main control valve. Jaw deactivation is accomplished by an opposed pressure which disengages the conical sleeve and the jaws are then spring biased into a cammed open position as the main ram begins to extend. Springs located between the individual jaw segments assist the camming action for opening the jaws.

  • Patent number: 4712665
Abstract: A container lifting arrangement wherein a pair of spaced rails and a vacuum cup assembly are concentrically mounted and relatively actuated to raise and lower a container, in part while the container is being conveyed toward a filling station by a conveyor. The vacuum cup is caused to engage the bottom surface of the container only after the container's forward movement has been stopped so as to not be subjected to any sliding action by the container, such action tending to roll the cup's edge and destroy its suction capabilities. Lifting the container before the conveyor stops provides additional time for filling the container.

  • Patent number: 4709156
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for inspecting the curved surface of a stationary article includes a mirror which is moved to direct a beam of light from a light source through a lens against each point of an arcuate series of points on a curved surface of the article. A second lens focuses beams of light reflected from the article onto a linear detector. The distance between locations at which the reflected light beams are focused on the linear detector corresponds to the distance at which points on the surface of the article are offset due to the curvature of the surface of the article.

  • Patent number: 4692990
Abstract: A machine tool, such as an internal grinding machine, includes a tool quill with a hollow tool having a deformable hub releasably held thereon and a compound slide for moving the tool quill relative to a tool removal arm and a replacement tool storage chute. The tool removal arm includes a tool enter station and tool strip station and is rotatable between the workpart axis and a tool discharge chute. For removal of a worn tool, the arm is rotated to position the tool enter station for insertion of a worn wheel thereon by slide movement toward the arm and then rotated to capture the worn wheel at the tool strip station. The slide is then retracted away from the arm to pull the quill out of the hollow tool, leaving the captured tool on the arm. The arm is rotated to carry the worn tool to the discharge chute for disposal while the slide positions the quill at the tool storage chute.

  • Patent number: 4692293
Abstract: Apparatus and a process for manufacturing multiple color thin-walled hollow sheels for parts such as automobile door panels, consoles and instrument panels from dry thermoplastic plastisol includes a supply box with a divider to form two or more compartments in the box. The box divider cooperates with selectively positioned split mold parts defining a separation in an open-ended heated mold for separating the mold into two or more sections. Complementary open ends of the charge box and mold are joined. Then the apparatus is rotated so that the powder is distributed into each mold section by gravity flow with the powder from each section flowing to the divider which separates the colors so as to form two or more tones on a resultant shell of cured material; thereafter the powder box is removed and the split mold parts are joined to clamp cast shell segments for fusion at a joint line.

  • Patent number: 4686020
Abstract: In electrochemically machining individual oversize blades of an integral bladed gas turbine engine rotor, opposed cathodes are initially offset in an electrolyte chamber relative to a selected machining position with the rotor outside the chamber skewed at an angle relative to the final position of the cathodes in the electrolyte chamber. The rotor and electrolyte chamber are then relatively moved in a vertical direction to position an individual blade to be machined in a workpart machining position in the chamber and concurrently one cathode is moved in a direction toward one side of the blade and the other cathode is moved in two other different directions, one toward the blade from the opposite side of the blade and the other transverse thereto, to position the cathodes in aligned relation on opposite sides of the blade at the machining position with blades adjacent the individual blade to be machined received in pockets in the cathodes without contact.

  • Patent number: 4683701
Abstract: A sterilization apparatus for sterilizing the interiors of paperboard containers, wherein such apparatus is operative prior to the container being mounted on a mandrel of a mandrel assembly on which the container bottom closures are formed, closed and sealed. This is accomplished by providing nebulizing means for communicating a suitable sterilant fog through and onto the inside surfaces of the carton blank from the time that it is removed from a magazine and while being opened into a four-sided tubular shape, thereby greatly increasing the total interior sterilizing time available prior to the container being filled downstream, as compared to conventional sterilization processes which are operative after the bottom panels of the carton have been closed and sealed. Heated air is supplied to each mandrel of the mandrel assembly and applied to the interior of the container while the container is mounted thereon.

  • Patent number: 4684455
Abstract: An electrically conductive arbor indexer shaft is coupled to an indexing D.C. motor by an insulator connector and the indexer shaft in an indexed position is tightly gripped by a resilient electrically conductive clamp connected to an electrically conductive support to which a buss is engaged for supplying electrical current to the arbor via the indexer shaft, clamp and support. During the ECM process, a workpart on the arbor is made an anode by current passing through the arbor indexer shaft, clamp, support and buss with the resilient clamp insuring sufficient electrical coupling of the arbor indexer shaft to the other upstream current carrying components.

  • Patent number: 4683098
Abstract: Apparatus for reducing the waste area in a mold for an article molded from a heat-fusing material by a powdered vinyl process, has a mold box disposed adjacent the backside of a mold surface for controlling the temperature over respective first and second areas of the mold surface. The waste area elimination is accomplished by isolating and insulating the section of the mold defining the waste area. A kerf is cut into the mold around the waste area to isolate the area. The kerf is filled with castable silicone to insulate the waste area from the heated segments of the mold. To obtain the coating, the mold is filled with powdered vinyl and the excess material is removed from the mold by dumping the plastisol from the mold into a return tank.
