Abstract: Methods, systems and programming for predicting search results quality. In one example, a search query is received from a user. A plurality of search results are obtained from a content source based on the search query. The plurality of search results are ranked based on their relevance scores with respect to the search query. A distribution of the relevance scores of the plurality of search results is normalized in each position of the ranking. A metric of the content source is computed based on the normalized distribution of the relevance scores. The metric indicates a relevance between the plurality of search results and the search query.

Abstract: Techniques are provided that include obtaining a Document Object Model of an HTML document, such as a web page of a publisher. Elements of the Document object model may be identified that are associated with native advertisement placement candidate containers. Based at least in part on analysis associated with the Document Object Model, and utilizing at least some of the identified elements, one or more native advertisement placement candidate containers may be determined. With some techniques, the analysis includes identifying a deepest set of nodes in the Document Object Model, corresponding to a particular tag sequence, whose cardinality is no less than a cardinality of a set of nodes in the Document Object Model, corresponding to a particular tag sequence, corresponding to the identified elements. Some techniques may utilize XPaths in the analysis.

Abstract: Sharing of content by users via the network is facilitated. Sharing suggestions are made to a user, the sharing suggestions including making a suggestion of one or more users with whom the user might wish to share content. A user's influence on other users and the user can be prompted to share content with other users based on the identified influence.

Abstract: A method for adjusting pricing for advertisements of non-guaranteed delivery (“NDG”) advertising auctions includes retrieving dwell time information for users that engage advertisements streamed to the users in a display content stream. The method aggregates the advertisements into different groups according to display context (such as advertisement category, viewing device, product in which the advertisement is streamed, etc.) and computes short-click ratios of advertisements in each group based on a short-click threshold assigned to the group and the user dwell time information for the group. The method further determines average dwell time by users on advertisements in respective groups. The method adjusts pricing of the advertisements of a group for NGD bidding based on the short-click ratio and average dwell time of the group, to favor groups having higher dwell times and lower short-click ratios. Prices may be dynamically adjusted across different contexts based on user engagement information.

Abstract: A system and method for Context Enhanced Mapping. A request is received from a user over a network for a map comprising an identification of a physical location, and at least one criteria. The physical location is mapped. Spatial, temporal, topical, and social data available to the network relating to the physical location and criteria is retrieved using a global index of data available to the network and prioritized for inclusion based upon the user and context of the request. The map of the physical location and at least some of the retrieved spatial, temporal, topical, and social data is displayed on a display medium.

Abstract: A user behavior monitoring module logs the operation of an image browser and sends the logged information to a personalization system. The personalization system includes a monitoring management module, a client statistics data store, a recommender system, and a content refinement module. The monitoring management module receives the logged information sent by the user behavior monitoring module and stores it in the client statistics data store. The recommender system determines user preferences based on the information stored in the client statistics data store. The content refinement module refines a set of content items based on the user preferences determined by the recommender system. The set is refined so that the resulting content items (and their ordering) are more relevant to the user operating the image browser. The refined set of content items is displayed to the user by the image browser.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and software related product (e.g., a computer readable memory) are presented for exchanging information between two or more devices when they are in a close proximity using gestures and web technologies. According to an embodiment, the identification of one or more devices using gestures is asynchronous, so that the two or more devices do not have to be shaken together at the same time synchronously, which is one advantage over conventional approaches. Another advantage is that various embodiments described herein do not require a user to download any special software (application), and it can work on all platforms, for example, with HTML5-compliant browsers.

Abstract: Facilitating browser access to cached content available from a peer to peer network by receiving a request for content from a content server, receiving from the content server content metadata indicating that the requested content is available from at least one alternative user computing device via a peer to peer network, instantiating on the user computing device a browser helper application which facilitates access to the peer to peer network, and receiving from the content server a lookup table comprising a list of alternative user computing devices from which the requested content is available. The lookup table can be parsed to select an alternative user computing device from which the content, or portions thereof, is requested. The received content can the be stored for later use or presented to the user via the browser.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for selecting advertisements based on local intent. Local intent may reflect whether a search query should receive results and advertisements that are geographically specific. The local intent may be determined using probabilistic models that analyze historical searches to determine which search terms tend to have local intent.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for classifying users. In accordance with one embodiment, a plurality of messages posted by a user via a microblogging service may be obtained. A set of feature values associated with the user may be obtained, each of the set of feature values corresponding to a different one of a set of one or more features. One or more of the set of feature values may be obtained based, at least in part, on content of the plurality of messages posted by the user, messaging behavior of the user via the microblogging service, and/or social connections of the user established via the microblogging service. The user may be classified based upon the set of feature values associated with the user.

Abstract: Providing a search engine with system configuration information. The system configuration information pertains to a system having a web server that provides content. For example, the content may be web pages associated with a web site, and the system may include hardware and software used to provide the content of the web site to end users. More particularly, the system can include one or more computer systems, web server software, application server software, and application programs that facilitate providing content. A search engine requests system configuration information from the web server. In response to the request, the web server provides system configuration information to the search engine. The search engine can use the system configuration information to reference portions of the content in an index. The index can be used to respond to a search query that involves content served by the web server.

Abstract: Users may engage with content that may invoke various emotions. For example, a user may find an image as inspirational, a social network post as funny, etc. Accordingly, content may be labeled with user emotion labels, specified by users that engaged with the content, to create labeled content (e.g., the image may be labeled as inspirational). Emotional transition triggers may be defined for users (e.g., 30 minutes of a user writing a school report using a word processing application). Responsive to a triggering of an emotional transition trigger, labeled content may be provided to a user (e.g., the image may be provided to the user as an inspirational break from writing the school report). In this way, content may be labeled based upon emotions that the content invokes in users, and such labeled content may be provided to users in a contextually relevant manner (e.g., a study break).

Abstract: Many computing scenarios enable a user to send a message to a user expressing a statement, such as a “happy birthday” message or a “let's meet for lunch” message, and may seek assistance in composing the message. Some services may suggest stock messages, which the user may browse and select, but the generic, impersonal style of the messages may be apparent to the recipient. Presented herein are techniques for composing a message from a user to a recipient expressing a selected statement in the personalized style of the user. Such techniques involve evaluating an expression set (e.g., a mailbox or text message set) of the user to identify an expression style of the user when expressing such statements to such recipients, and composing a message that expressing the statement in the expression style of the user.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and programs are provided to determine event-level traffic quality for event(s) related to user interaction with online content (e.g., via a webpage, a mobile application, etc.). Data related to a current user event and past user events may be received, where such data may include information regarding a set of entities associated with each respective user event. A feature value set for the current user event is generated based on the information regarding the respective sets of entities associated with the current user event and the past user events. Based at least on such feature value set, a traffic quality score for the current user event may be determined, e.g., based on a weighted combination of elements of the feature value set. An entity-level traffic quality score for an entity may be determined based on event-level traffic quality scores of user events that involve that entity.

Abstract: Apparatuses, methods, and systems directed to efficient cooling of data centers. Some embodiments of the invention allow encapsulation of cold rows through an enclosure and allow one or more fans to draw cold air from the cold row encapsulation structure to cool servers installed on the server racks. In other particular embodiments, the systems disclosed can be used to mix outside cool air into the cold row encapsulation structure to cool the servers. In some embodiments, the present invention involves fanless servers installed on the server racks and introduces fan units to draw cooling air from the cold row encapsulation structure through the fanless servers on the racks.

Abstract: Techniques are provided that include using a collaborative arrangement between a first entity associated with a physical location, such as a physical store or residence that has or sells one or more products of a first product type, and a second entity, such as a Web site offering for purchase products of the first product type. According to some such arrangements, if, for example, a user purchases a product from the Web site after the user evidently made a visit to the physical location, or received a display or demonstration of a product of the first product type at the physical location, then revenue or value resulting from the purchase may be split or shared between entities including the first entity and the second entity.
