Abstract: There is described a water soluble compound having a molecular weight of from about 70,000 to about 2,000,000, and having the formula I,(PS)--X--(HB)--Z IwherePS represents a physiologically acceptable polysaccharide of molecular weight from about 2,000 to about 2,000,000,X represents a covalently bonded chemical bridging group,HB represents a haemoglobin residue, andZ represents an oxygen affinity reduced ligand, containing 2 or more phosphate groups.There is also described haemoglobin linked to an oxygen affinity reducing ligand derived from inositol phosphate, and polymers of such linked haemoglobin.Processes for making the compounds, and their formulation and use as oxygen transporting agents, are also described.

Abstract: There is described an improved aerosol dispensing metering valve. The valve, for use with a container for pressurized material comprises a valve body with a single internal metering chamber and outer and inner seals closing the respective outer and inner ends thereof. A valve member co-operating with the seals is movable between an inoperative position, in which the chamber is isolated from the atmosphere while the chamber communicates with the interior of the container, and an operative position in which the contents of the chamber can be discharged to the atmosphere while the chamber is isolated from the interior of the container.

Abstract: There are provided benzopyrans of formula I, ##STR1## wherein the substituents, R.sub.5 -R.sub.8 and EA are as defined in the specification. These compounds are useful as anti-asthmatic agents.

Abstract: There are described compounds of formula I, ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 represents benzofurazanyl, pyridyl or phenyl, the pyridyl or phenyl being substituted,--COOR.sub.2 and --COOR.sub.3 are various ester groups,one of R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 represents alkyl Cl to 6 and the other represents --CONR.sub.10 R.sub.11 ; --CSNH.sub.2 ; --C(.dbd.NH)SR.sub.9 ; --S(O).sub.m R.sub.9 ; phenyl optionally substituted by one or more of alkyl Cl to 6, halogen, alkoxy Cl to 6 or nitro; alkyl Cl to 6 substituted by halogen; or furanyl;m is 0 or 1R.sub.9 is alkyl Cl to 6, andR.sub.10 and R.sub.11 each independently represent hydrogen or alkyl Cl to 6, or together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a 5 or 6 membered heterocyclic ring.There are also described processes for making the compounds, and pharmaceutical, e.g. calcium antagonist, formulations containing them.

Abstract: There are provided pharmaceutical compounds useful in treating hypertension, heart diseases and renal failure. These compounds are 4-hydroxy phenethylamines wherein the 3 position on the phenyl nucleus is occupied by either an amino, amide, carbamyl, urea sulfonamide, substituted alkyl or fluorine atom, and the amine group is further linked to another phenyl radical through an alkylene radical which may contain nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur or cyclic hydrocarbon radicals as intervening groups.

Abstract: There is described a scintillation medium comprising at least one diisopropylnaphthalene, wherein said at least one diisopropylnaphthalene is liquid at a temperature of 5.degree. C.There is also described a method of detecting .beta.-ray emissions using the scintillation medium.

Abstract: There is described a mixture of 4-[2-(6-(2-phenylethylamino)hexylamino)ethyl]-1,2-benzenediol, or 4-[2-(6-(2-chlorophenyl)ethylamino)hexylamino)ethyl]-1,2-benzenediol or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt of either thereof or as active ingredient, and a physiologically acceptable acid.There is also described a method of preparing a solid form of the active ingredient, which comprises freeze drying an aqueous solution of the mixture, and a freeze dried composition containing the active ingredient prepared by the method.The mixtures are useful as pharmaceuticals, e.g. in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions.

Abstract: There is described a water still (1) comprising a boiler assembly (5) and a condenser assembly (3) communicating by means (7) for removing droplets from vapour.The means comprise at least one jet, e.g. a plurality of jets (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25) radially disposed around a capped annulus (9), the jets capable of imparting to the droplets a spiralling motion, and urging the droplets to impinge on an interposed deflecting surface, e.g. a side wall (13) of the still (1).Stills (1) including a heatable distillate receiver (39), a gas vent (51, 53), a level detector (69), a boiler outlet valve (59) and an improved condenser (45) are also described.The stills described are useful for preparing water of low conductivity.

Abstract: There is described a centrifuge provided with a rotor identification system.The rotor identification system includes a rotor (4) having a pair of detectable elements (11, 12), e.g. magnets, spaced by an angular separation characteristic of the rotor (4), detector means (3), e.g. a Hall effect transducer, positioned so as to interact with the detectable elements (11, 12) to generate a signal which is a function of the angular separation and means responsive (20) to the signal to identify the rotor (4).

Abstract: There is described a finely divided inhalation drug, e.g. sodium cromoglycate, comprising a therapeutically effective proportion of individual particles capable of penetrating deep into the lung, characterized in that a bulk of the particles which is both unagglomerated and unmixed with a coarse carrier, is sufficiently free flowing to be filled into capsules on an automatic filling machine and to empty from an opened capsule in an inhalation device. A number of the individual drug particles have a spherical, collapsed spherical or ring doughnut shape.There is also described a method of making the fine particles and pharmaceutical formulations containing them.

Abstract: There is described an adjustable dose injection pistol comprising a body assembly (1) including an elongate chamber (8), a piston chamber (3) including a piston (13) slideable in the chamber (8) between filled and discharged positions and means for adjusting (16, 26, 19, 20, 22, 23) one of said positions.The means comprise a selectable plurality of channels (20, 22, 23) included in one of the assemblies (1, 3), the channels (20, 22, 23) being spaced about and parallel to the piston-chamber axis, and an arrestor (19) located on the other assembly (1, 3), the arrestor (19) being selectably engageable with an aligned channel (20, 22, 23) upon movement of said piston (13) between said positions.The channels (20, 22, 23) are preferably located in the piston assembly (3) on a sleeve (16) concentrically mounted with the piston (13) and rotable with respect to the chamber (8).The pistol may be used for the injection of liquids into animals.

Abstract: There is described a carbon bed absorber (7) including a temperature sensor (10), e.g. a conduit (10) which fuses at a predetermined temperature, wherein the sensor (10) is operably linked (11, 15) to a supply of fire extinguishing fluid (14) to cause flow of the fluid to the bed (7) on the sensor (10) sensing a predetermined elevated temperature. In a preferred embodiment, the temperature sensor is an optical fibre (10) which fuses at the predetermined temperature.

Abstract: There is described a sterile ointment basis, suitable for use in the eye, comprising one or more paraffins and acetylated lanolin.There is also described an ointment comprising an active ingredient, e.g. an antiallergic drug, and the ointment basis.There is further described a process for the manufacture in a medicament container of the ointment comprising an active ingredient.

Abstract: There is described a mixture of sodium cromoglycate of mass median diameter from 2 to 30 microns with a pharmaceutically acceptable water soluble carrier of sieve size from 200 to 1000 microns, the carrier having a solubility of greater than 1 to 5 by weight in water at 20.degree. C.The mixture is useful in the treament of conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.
