  • Patent number: 4514196
Abstract: The invention relates to an absorption tower (so-called scrubber) for gas washing in which the gas is introduced into the lower portion of the tower and flows upwards while making contact with a washing fluid. The tower (4) is provided with one or several washing stages (6-9), each comprising one or several venturi tubes (10) through which the gas is given a speed increase and the washing fluid is discharged through fluid nozzles (25) in the gas flow path. The venturi tubes in each washing stage are led through a common collecting baffle (11) for washing fluid which is then recirculated to the nozzles. Means (26,28,29) for liquid distribution are disposed in the upper portion of each venturi tube (10) and are arranged for fluid distribution in the gas flow in directions forming such angles to the vertical that the fluid flow will not fall backwards into the openings of the venturi tubes even if the gas flow through the tower is interrupted.

  • Patent number: 4512356
Abstract: An exhaust air valve for placement in a ventilation conduit through which air is exhausted from a space to be ventilated. The valve has a casing with a concave seat surface facing upstream of the flow through the conduit and having a central valve orifice. A convex valve element cooperates with the seat surface and when the valve is closed engages the seat surface along a line of contact surrounding the seat. The curvature of the respective surfaces is the same, at least along the line of contact to ensure a tight closure of the orifice by the valve body. When opening, the valve body slides along the curved surface and the upstream surface of the valve body exposed to the flow is also convex to guide the flow toward the center of the orifice. Several embodiments are illustrated including valves with cords for remotely controlling the valve and heat-sensitive tripping mechanisms which automatically close the valve in the event of a rise in temperature above a preset level.

  • Patent number: 4490159
Abstract: A system and method for controlling energy input to a series of electrostatic dust separator devices having a common gas inlet and a common gas outlet. A detector unit is disposed in the gas outlet to detect the dust concentration or evaluate the actual dust loss in the exhausted gas. Energy control circuitry is coupled with each separator device to control the energy input to each separator device. The control circuitry is actuated by an actuating device to first change and then restore the energy input to each of the separator devices in a selected sequence to thereby change and restore the dust concentration in the exhausted gas. Computation circuitry is coupled with the detector unit to compute the change in dust concentration resulting from a certain change in energy input to each of the separator devices in the sequence.

  • Patent number: 4477983
Abstract: A cylinder dryer usually includes a plurality of heated cylinders (4) about which a web-like material (1) is taken in a zig-zag mode and pressed against certain of the heated cylinder surfaces by means of an endless high-permeability wire (3), whereby cylinder pockets are formed between the cylinders (4), web (1) and wire (3), when the latter relinquishes contact with the web at a cylinder surface (6) to pass over a return roll (7) arranged between the cylinders, and once again makes contact with the web at the next following cylinder circumference (8). According to the invention these cylinder pockets are ventilated by a flow of drying air from a blowing box (9) being blown over the width of the wire against its surface facing away from the cylinder, in a direction forming an acute angle to and having a directing component substantially counter to the direction of travel of the wire. Blowing is carried out thereby within an area (6) where the wire relinquishes contact with the web.

  • Patent number: 4454102
Abstract: Purification of gases from acid gas components according to the dry method means that the gas is contacted with an absorbent in a solid phase, which yields a relatively low reaction rate. In order to increase the reaction rate according to the invention, the gas is contacted with a mixture consisting partially of a solid absorbent phase and partially a liquid phase on the surface of the solid phase. At the purification of flue gases from sulphur dioxide hot gas is contacted with an absorption liquid in a drying apparatus, where evaporation of the water supplied and a reaction between sulphur dioxide and the absorption substance take place simultaneously, whereafter the solid product phase is separated from the gas in a dust separator and a slower, secondary absorption reaction is operative.

  • Patent number: 4450899
Abstract: Method and apparatus for improving the operation of forced-air-cooled steam condensors having a bank of air-cooled heat exchangers connected between steam lines and condensate conduits. Air is forced through the heat exchangers by fans and shutters are provided to either discharge the spent air to atmosphere or to recirculate the spent air into the fan inlets to mix with fresh outside air. The steam pressure in the steam line is sensed along with the temperatures of the condensate in each exchanger and of outside air. The condensate conduits are in the recirculation path of spent air, and the fan is adjustable to control the quantity of air forced through the exchangers. By controlling the shutters and the fans in response to the pressure and temperatures, a highly-efficient cooling effect is achieved.
