  • Patent number: 5549821
Abstract: An all-plastic filter assembly for filtering fluids includes a generally cylindrical injection molded plastic outer shell which has a closed base and an open opposite end and which defines a hollow interior which receives a modular filler cartridge. The outer shell is injection molded with a generally cylindrical mounting stem which is integral with the closed base and extends part way toward the open end of the outer shell. The filter cartridge includes a generally cylindrical filter element and a molded endplate and centertube member bonded to the filter element. The centertube portion of the molded member is received by the mounting stem as part of the positioning and mounting of the filter cartridge into the outer shell.

  • Patent number: 5362390
Abstract: A shut-off valve for a spin-on filter includes a generally cylindrical outer housing which has an open top surface and an annular spring channel formed in that top surface for receipt of a coil spring. The spring is positioned so as to act on a valve actuator and gasket combination which are moveable relative to a valve seat for opening and closing the shut-off valve. In the normally closed condition the spring exerts a spring biasing force on the upper portion of the valve actuator which pushes it against the gasket and pushes the gasket against the outer sealing ridge of the valve seat. In this condition any liquid flowing into the top center opening of the housing will not be allowed to pass through the lowered centered opening of the valve seat. However, when the spin-on filter which includes the shut-off valve is spun onto a mounting base a stem on that mounting base pushes upwardly on the valve actuator compressing the spring and creating a liquid flow path between the gasket and the valve seat.

  • Patent number: 5258118
Abstract: This invention relates to a reusable filter unit for an internal combustion engine wherein the filter fulfills both a filtering function and an additive function, the filter including a filtering part with replaceable filtering media and an additive part adapted to receive replaceable chemical additives. The filter part includes a generally toroidal shaped plastic element for receiving a generally cone shaped replaceable filter media, which can be agglomerated fiber, the element fitting into, and permanently bonded to, an outer shell, with the additive part being located below the element.

  • Patent number: 5171430
Abstract: This disclosure illustrates a replaceable filter assembly for fluids in which the filter has a shell formed from an injection molded threaded end and an integral blow molded closed end to form a unitary shell. A seal such as a flange is provided adjacent to the threaded end so that a pressure seal can be maintained. A filter medium is supported within the shell so as to direct fluid flow through it to remove contaminants. The shell can be formed from plastic materials such as polyester terephthalate (PET), polyether sulfone (PES), and polyether urethane (PEU). This construction enables an inexpensive filter assembly and, with transparent plastic materials, an indication of the contaminant removal activity within the filter.

  • Patent number: 5080787
Abstract: A high-pressure filter assembly which includes a cover or nutplate secured to a housing via a sidewall portion of the housing deformed into a groove formed in the cover sidewall. The cover and housing are formed such that the cover can be properly seated upon the housing prior to seaming without special locators or beads formed in the container sidewall. A method and apparatus for forming the filter assembly are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4334994
Abstract: A disposable, oil filter cartridge is described. The cartridge comprises a shell of circular outline within which a stack of interconnected filter discs of octagonal outline are held in preloaded, compressed condition by an end cap attached to the outer, or open, end of the shell. The stack of filter elements has a plurality of tortuous passageways through which oil flows and is discharged, after filtration, centrally of the stack of filter elements, through the end cap. A compression spring maintains the integrity of the tortuous passageways which might otherwise be lost due to the expected reduction in thickness of the filter elements during use. A second embodiment of the invention illustrates a similar cartridge in which the filter discs are of hexagonal outline which facilitates their fabrication from a sheet of filter material.
