  • Patent number: 5648051
Abstract: An apparatus for quenching in hydroprocessing of a hydrocarbon feed stream, which provides a substantially continuous flow of uniformly distributed hydrogen and hydrocarbon liquid across a densely packed catalyst bed which substantially fills the entire volume of a reactor vessel. Catalyst are selected to be essentially the same density, shape and size at a design feed rate of liquids and gas to prevent ebullation of the packed catalyst bed at the design feed rates. The liquid and gas components of the hydrocarbon feed stream flow into the bed of catalyst and a quenching medium, which is preferably a liquid, is injected into the bed of catalyst. Injection of a liquid quench reduces the gas component of the hydrocarbon feed stream while simultaneously increasing the residence time and reducing the liquid velocity of the liquid component of the hydrocarbon feed stream within the substantially packed bed of catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5642787
Abstract: Section mills have been invented that have one or more blades whose tops are rotatably extendable outward from a mill body as bottoms of the blade(s) rotate about a fixed point, the blade bottoms rotatably secured to the mill body so that, in response to a downwardly moving wash tube contacting the blades, tops of the blades move out from the mill body. In one aspect the blades have a milling surface which is of such an outward extent and which is parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the mill body when the blades are fully extended so that the blades achieve "full sweep" milling.

  • Patent number: 5641917
Abstract: A multi-axis seat test machine for use with seats is disclosed. The test machine includes a loading element and a seat mount. A selectively actuable fore-aft displacement mechanism is disposed between the loading element and the seat mount and operably displaces one of the seat mount and the loading element relative to the other in the fore-aft direction. A selectively actuable lateral displacement mechanism is disposed between the loading frame and the seat mount and operably displaces one of the seat mount and the loading frame relative to the other in a lateral direction. An engaging member simulates, at least in part, a shape of a human posterior for engagement with the seat. The loading element operably biases the engaging member against the seat in a substantially vertical direction with a predetermined vertical load.

  • Patent number: 5642332
Abstract: An acoustic transducer assembly includes a piezoelectric ceramic crystal. The assembly also includes a pair of solid circular metal plates positioned to sandwich the piezoelectric ceramic crystal between them, wherein each of the metal plates comprises: (i) an outer rim circling a concave portion formed in a first surface of the metal plate, the first surface oriented toward the piezoelectric ceramic crystal; and (ii) an epoxy wicking barrier formed in the first surface, adjacent to the outer rim. The assembly also includes an epoxy adhesive interposed between the metal plates and the piezoelectric ceramic crystal, wherein the outer rim of each plate is bonded to the piezoelectric ceramic crystal by the epoxy adhesive, the pair of plates thus forming a cavity between them. The assembly also includes a flexing stop attached to each first surface.

  • Patent number: 5641956
Abstract: An optical waveguide sensor arrangement for sensing at least one physical parameter is provided. This arrangement comprises an optical waveguide having guided modes, lossy non-guided modes, and a long period grating coupling the guided modes to the lossy non-guided modes wherein the long period grating produces a wavelength transmission spectrum functionally dependent on the physical parameter sensed. A source means provides light to the optical waveguide sensor and an optoelectronic detector, which is positioned in an operable relationship to the optical waveguide sensor, detects light transmitted through the optical waveguide sensor. Lastly, a processing means is attached to the optoelectronic detector for correlating the wavelength transmission spectrum with a numerical value for the physical parameter sensed. The physical parameters sensed by the optical waveguide sensor include: temperature, strain, shape, refractive index and corrosion.

  • Patent number: 5636692
Abstract: A new casing opening formation apparatus has been invented which includes an explosive charge and an apparatus for positioning the explosive charge in a casing in a cased wellbore at a desired location. In one aspect the apparatus includes a drill bit or other drilling device releasably connected to a bit diversion device; and in another aspect the apparatus includes milling apparatus for milling the casing. In one aspect the opening created is a radial ledge for facilitating casing penetration by a mill which mills out a window. In one aspect the opening created has such a radial ledge and includes a slot for inhibiting or preventing coring of the mill. In one aspect the opening created is such a slot alone. In one aspect the opening created is a completed window for sidetracking operations, no further milling is needed and drilling commences in the formation adjacent the explosively created opening.

  • Patent number: 5634520
Abstract: An enhanced oil recovery process comprises of the at least periodic introduction of (i) a non-condensible gas preferably selected from among carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane or mixtures thereof, and (ii) an aqueous drive solution, preferably brine, into a reservoir formation. In this process, the half cycle of non-condensible gas injection, prior to aqueous drive fluid injection, measured in hydrocarbon pore volume is less than 0.25%. In this preferred embodiment, the non-condensible gas, e.g., carbon dioxide, and water, are simultaneously injected into the formation.
