Abstract: The present invention relates to agarooligosaccharide hydrolase and a method for producing 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose and galactose from agarose by using the same. More specifically, the production yield of 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose and galactose from agarose, that is, the saccharification yield, is improved by using ?-agarooligosaccharide hydrolase having an agarotriose hydrolytic activity.

Abstract: A method for removing hazardous air pollutants and contaminants from a wood product is disclosed. In a first step, a contaminated wood product is placed in a treatment vessel. This wood product includes an initial amount of an absorbed contaminant, selected from the group consisting of creosote, a mixture of pentachlorophenol and a carrier oil, a mixture of copper naphthenate and a carrier oil, and combinations thereof In a second step, the wood product is heated to a treatment temperature sufficient to evaporate at least a portion of the absorbed contaminant from the wood product but insufficient to pyrolyze the wood product. The wood product is then maintained at the treatment temperature for a period of time sufficient to reduce the absorbed contaminant in the wood product to a final amount which is less than about 20% of the initial amount. Optionally, the desorbed wood may then be treated with a chemical to remove inorganic impurities that are detrimental during thermochemical conversion of biomass.

A braking force is induced on a wheel, such as through eddy currents or frictionally, by finely or coarsely adjusting the brake actuator. The brake actuator may thus include a knob whereby a user may finely adjust the braking force on the wheel and a lever to actuate interval settings whereby the brake actuator provides set positions of braking resistance. The exercise machine may further include a pop-pin assembly with an over-center cam mechanism to clamp members together. The pop-pin assembly also includes a fine adjustment to adjust the clamping force. So, for example, the seat stem may be clamped to the seat tube, or the handlebar stem clamped to the head tube, with a lever actuating the over center mechanism.
Abstract: A system and method for measuring material properties of a medium includes producing a multi-directional wave field in the medium and detecting, with a detection system capable of detecting wave fields propagating in a medium, the multi-directional wave field in at least two spatial dimensions over at least one time instance. The system and method also include determining a lowest wave speed, calculating at least one of wave speed and material properties of the medium, and generating a report indicating the at least one of wave speed and material properties of the medium.

Abstract: This invention relates to the design and function of a compressible valve replacement prosthesis which can be deployed into a beating heart without extracorporeal circulation using a transcatheter delivery system. The design as discussed focuses on the deployment of a device via a minimally invasive fashion and by way of example considers a minimally invasive surgical procedure preferably utilizing the intercostal or subxyphoid space for valve introduction. In order to accomplish this, the valve is formed in such a manner that it can be compressed to fit within a delivery system and secondarily ejected from the delivery system into the annulus of a target valve such as a mitral valve or tricuspid valve.

Abstract: Described herein are compositions useful in anticancer treatment. The compositions are composed of (a) an O2-aryl substituted diazeniumdiolate and (b) an amphiphile, wherein the amount of amphiphile is sufficient to produce a liposome or micelle. The compositions described herein provide numerous advantages such as increased solubility and stability of the O2-aryl substituted diazeniumdiolate in vivo. The compositions also do not induce hypotension. Methods for using the compositions in anticancer treatment are also described herein.
