Abstract: Methods and systems for diagnosing a bone disease or other condition related to collagen in a subject are provided. These include providing a bone sample from the subject and determining a quantitative collagen morphology value of the bone sample. A reference value is provided from a non-affected control subject where the reference value is a quantitative collagen morphology value from the same type of bone sample obtained from a population of non-affected control subjects. The quantitative collagen morphology value of the subject's bone sample is compared to the reference value. If the collagen morphology value is altered versus the reference value, the subject is diagnosed as having a collagen related bone disease. The collagen morphology value can include mean fibril spacings and distributions of the fibril spacings taken from a subject's bone sample.

Abstract: A functionally graded cemented tungsten carbide material produced via heat treating a sintered cemented tungsten carbide is disclosed and described. The heat treating process comprises at least a step that heats the sintered material to the multi-phase temperature range in which multiple phases including solid tungsten carbide, liquid metal binder, and solid metal binder coexist. Additionally, the material, after the heat treating process comprises a surface layer with lower metal binder content than the nominal value of metal binder content of the bulk of the material. The material is used to make tools for rock drilling, machining of metal alloys, and machining of non-metallic materials. The material can also be used to make engineered wear parts that are used in mechanical systems and applications where wear resistance is required or desired.
Abstract: Disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions and methods for treating or preventing muscle diseases or the symptoms thereof. The compositions typically include and the methods typically utilize phosphodiesterase type 5A inhibitors.

Abstract: A system for creating protected functional descriptions of integrated circuits provides an encrypted functional description that allows the integrated circuit to be simulated with respect to producing outputs for given sets of inputs without identification of the constituent components of the integrated circuit such as the logical gates making up the integrated circuit. The encrypted functional description may include encrypted truth-tables describing the generic gates of the integrated circuit, the encrypted truth-tables securing the function of each logical gate by including multiple redundant table entries mapped to alias values of Boolean logical states and erroneous table entries.
Abstract: A method and service server for providing passenger density information are provided. The service server for providing passenger density information of a car according to an embodiment of the invention may include: a motion vector detection unit that detects motion vectors generated by the movements of passengers from a captured image of the inside of the car; a head recognition unit that recognizes the heads of passengers from the image; and a density information generation unit that generates the passenger density information of the car by using one or more of the motion vectors, a result of head recognition of the passengers, and tag sensor information received from sensors installed in the car.

Abstract: Provided are novel polymer brushes that may be used in underlying buffer or imaging layers for block copolymer lithography. The novel polymer brushes include X-A-b-B and X-A-b-C block copolymer brushes, with X an anchoring group, the A block a lithographically sensitive polymer, and the C block a random copolymer. According to various embodiments, polymer block brushes for neutral and preferential layers are provided; the neutral layers non-preferential to the overlying block copolymer and the preferential layers preferential to a block of the overlying block copolymer. Also provided are novel methods of patterning polymer block brush layers as well as polymer block brush buffer and imaging layers that are directly patternable by e-beam, deep UV, extreme UV, X-ray or other lithographic methods.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to drug discovery and development and, more particularly, to in vitro assay systems and methods for selecting lead anti-cancer agents for subsequent testing in human and non-human subjects. The present disclosure allows filtering for candidate anti-cancer agents that are not inactivated by liver enzymes, are able to diffuse through cell layers, are not toxic to bone marrow cells, retain anti-cancer activity in the context of stromal support, and are effective after time-limited exposure mimicking non-hepatic clearance by kidneys and other mechanisms.
Abstract: A variable-focus lens system that includes a lens assembly having an electrowetting liquid lens that can be wrapped onto a curved surface such as a lens without distorting a chamber holding the electrowetting liquid lens is provided. The lens assembly includes a container body having a cup, in which the chamber is defined, and supports that extend in different directions from the cup. A flexible base substrate is arranged under the container body. Both the container body and flexible base substrate may be made from a soft polymer material and made using low-temperature fabrication processes. The flexible base substrate may be thinner than the container body and provide a relatively large surface area that engages the curved surface such that the stresses associated with wrapping a micro lens assembly onto the curved surface may be primarily absorbed by the flexible base substrate.
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling an output voltage of a switching mode power supply (SMPS) by adjusting a switching duty ratio is provided. A comparator outputs a state signal varying depending on a comparison result between an output voltage of the SMPS and a reference voltage. A clock generator generates an internal chip operating frequency and a switching frequency of the SMPS. A digital controller determines on/off of current cells depending on the state signal input from the comparator. A digital pulse width modulator (DPWM) determines a duty ratio of a digital pulse width modulation signal by determining a charging/discharging time of an internal capacitor based on an amount of current of the current cell.

Abstract: A search of the public human genome database identified a human EST, GenBank accession number AW293249, which has high homology to known pufferfish urocortin sequences. The full length sequence was amplified from human genomic DNA and sequenced. Sequence homology comparisons of the novel sequence with human urocortin I and urocortin II revealed that the sequence encoded a novel human urocortin, which was designated urocortin III (UcnIII). While urocortin III does not have high affinity for either CRF-R1 or CRF-R2, the affinity for CRF-R2 is greater than the affinity for CRF-R1. Urocortin III is capable stimulating cyclic AMP production in cells expressing CRF-R2? or ?. Thus, the affinity is high enough that urocortin III could act as a native agonist of CRF-R2. However, it is also likely that urocortin III is a stronger agonist of a yet to be identified receptor.
