Abstract: Described herein are mass spectrometry systems and methods which improve the accuracy of isobaric tag-based quantification by alleviating the pervasive problem of precursor interference and co-isolation of impurities through gas-phase purification. During the gas-phase purification, the mass-to-charge ratios of precursor ions within at least a selected range are selectively changed allowing ions having similar unmodified mass-to-charge ratios to be separated before further isolation, fragmentation or analysis.

Abstract: Cyano-substituted anthracene containing polyamines were synthesized and shown to be efficient polyamine transporter ligands. Moreover, these compounds (3 and 4) had improved fluorescence properties over previously known anthryl-polyamine conjugates, which facilitated their intracellular trafficking by confocal microscopy. These cytotoxic fluorescent agents may find use as molecular probes which traffic into cells via the polyamine transport system and may also be viable anticancer drugs which are readily quantified in human tissues due to their excellent fluorescence properties: (excitation: ? 405 nm) and emission (420 nm) occurs in the visible light range. The ability to excite and emit in the visible range provides an advantage to these probes as these wavelengths are not toxic to human cells (versus ultraviolet mediated excitations, ?<400 nm) and visible light lasers are less costly to purchase and operate than UV laser sources.

The LED coating method includes (a) preparing a substrate and a plurality of LEDs arranged on the substrate; (b) applying a photoresist onto the substrate and the plurality of LEDs; and (c) selectively exposing the photoresist to light to form a first coating on surfaces of the plurality of LEDs. Here, the first coating is formed by curing the photoresist.
Abstract: The invention discloses an aqueous method of making polymer coated superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The method comprises providing a mixture of iron salts in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. A solution of ammonium hydroxide is added to the mixture and stirred. Stirring continues with an aqueous solution of one or more biocompatible polymers so as to promote formation of polymer coated iron nanoparticles in suspension, wherein optionally at least one of the polymers in the coating may be aminated. Centrifuging the suspension leaves a supernatant without large particles. Filtering the supernatant through an ultrafiltration membrane and collecting the filtrate recovers polymer coated nanoparticles. Crosslinking the polymer is effected by treatment with a solution of epichlorohydrin and sodium hydroxide while stirring vigorously for up to about eight hours. Optionally aminating the polymer may be accomplished by treatment with ammonia after crosslinking and then removing remaining free epichlorohydrin.

Abstract: Water soluble reagents and methods for the formation of an amide bond between a phosphinothioester and an azide in an aqueous medium. The phosphinothioester is generated using a water-soluble phosphinothiol reagent. This reaction allows formation of an amide bond between a wide variety of chemical species including amino acids, peptides or protein fragments in an aqueous solution. Of particular interest, this reaction allows for the formation of an amide bond in a physiological setting. In a specific embodiment, this invention provides reagents and methods for peptide ligation in an aqueous medium. The reaction eliminates the need for a cysteine residue and is traceless leaving no residual atoms in the ligated peptide product.

In some instances, the slurry is thixotropic and contains between 10 to 75 weight percent of solid powders. The solid powders can include between 40 to 75 weight percent limestone, 10 to 35 weight percent clay and 10 to 30 weight percent magnesium oxide or a proportional concentration of magnesium hydroxide.
Abstract: This method of adaptive signal averaging is used to enhance the signal to noise ratio of magnetic resonance and other analytical measurements which involve repeatable signals partially or completely obscured by noise in a single measurement at a rate much faster than that observed with conventional signal averaging. This technique expedites the signal averaging process because it filters each individual scan in real time with an adaptive algorithm and then averages them separately to provide an averaged filtered signal with less noise. This technique is particularly useful for any type of continuous wave magnetic resonance experiment or any other noisy measurement where signal averaging is utilized.
Abstract: Sensor device for ion channel recordings; liquid-liquid measurements and resistive pulse particle counting comprising; at least one sensor element; the element comprising a diamond thin film substrate and a pore which is a nanopore or a micropore included in the substrate. This device may be used in analysis, for instance the device may be used for single molecule detection of an apialyte (e.g. DNA), for the analysis of interactions between a sensor element and an analyte, for the detection of pore forming entities, or for the determination of ion transfer.

Abstract: A low-temperature catalytic process for converting biomass (preferably glycerol recovered from the fabrication of bio-diesel) to synthesis gas (i.e., H2/CO gas mixture) in an endothermic gasification reaction is described. The synthesis gas is used in exothermic carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions, such as Fischer-Tropsch, methanol, or dimethylether syntheses. The heat from the exothermic carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction is integrated with the endothermic gasification reaction, thus providing an energy-efficient route for producing fuels and chemicals from renewable biomass resources.

Abstract: The present invention provides at least three methods of predicting whether an unknown biological specimen originates from a member of a particular family. These methods compare DNA profiles from unknown biological specimens to DNA profiles of more than one family member, which significantly increases the methods' identification ability. In particular, the invention describes combining at least a ranked first family member list and a ranked second family member list to create a combined ranked list and identifying the unknown biological specimen as one contained among a list of specimens having the highest combined rankings representing the candidates that are most likely related to the family. A second method encompasses comparing test DNA profiles from unknown biological specimens to a family pedigree comprising target DNA profiles obtained from multiple biological specimens of family members.
