Publication number: 20120113357Abstract: Method, system and device for a transflective liquid crystal display with both transmissive and reflective functions is realized by using a transflective component into a transmissive LCD. The transflective component can be a transparent substrate with patterned reflectors on one surface and repetitive patterned lenses or prisms formed on the opposite surface facing the backlight unit. The transparent areas substantially allow the optical beams to pass through. The light from the backlight is refracted or focused by the optical structures onto the transparent areas or apertures of other surface, thus a substantial amount of backlight transmits to the LC for light modulation for different gray levels. For the incident ambient light incident on the transflective component, the majority is reflected back to the viewer by the reflectors on the transflective component, and the remainder transmits the transflective component to the backlight unit and be recycled to be used again.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2010Publication date: May 10, 2012Applicants: Chimei InnoLux Corp., University of Central Florida Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Hui-Chuan Cheng, Zhibing Ge, Shin-Tson Wu, Wang-Yang Li, Chung-Kuang Wei

Publication number: 20120117012Abstract: Working memory (WM) is part of the brain's memory system that provides temporary storage and manipulation of information necessary for cognition. Although WM has limited capacity at any given time, it has vast memory content in the sense that it acts on the brain's nearly infinite repertoire of lifetime memories. As described, large memory content and WM functionality emerge spontaneously if the spike-timing nature of neuronal processing is taken into account. The memories are represented by extensively overlapping groups of neurons that exhibit stereotypical time-locked spatiotemporal spike-timing patterns, called polychronous patterns. Using computer-implemented simulations, associative synaptic plasticity in the form of short-term STDP selects such polychronous neuronal groups (PNGs) into WM by temporarily strengthening the synapses of the selected PNGs.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2011Publication date: May 10, 2012Applicant: Neurosciences Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Botond F. Publication number: 20120111801Abstract: Disclosed is a near-field photocatalyst using a ZnO (ZnO) nanowire. The photocatalyst is advantageous in that low-priced zinc is used instead of titanium, conventionally used as a photocatalyst to reduce expenses, and that it is possible to obtain overvoltage which is sufficient to generate hydrogen using an optical near field formed around an end of a ZnO nanowire without the application of additional external voltage, thus the use of a costly electrode, such as platinum, is avoided and a process is simplified.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2005Publication date: May 10, 2012Applicants: Seoul National University R & DB Foundation, POSTECH FOUNDATIONInventors: Gyu-chul Yi, Motoichi Ohtsu, Takashi Yatsui
