Abstract: The present invention discloses methods of preparing a continuous, porous metal oxide monolith in a container. The method involves providing a reaction mixture containing a metal salt or metal alkoxide compound, a solvent, and a porogenic reagent. Next, an epoxide is added to the reaction mixture under conditions effective to initiate condensation and polymerization of the reaction mixture. Then, a container is filled with the reaction mixture after epoxide addition to obtain a continuous, porous metal oxide monolith in the container. The present invention also discloses columns including a tubular container and a continuous, porous Group IV metal oxide monolith in contact with the inner walls of the tubular container, where the Group IV metal oxide monolith is free of any support or matrix material, and other articles including a continuous, porous Group IV metal oxide monolith, where the metal oxide monolith is free of any support or matrix material.

Abstract: Particular aspects provide novel recombinant cells and cell lines (e.g., macrophage cell lines) that are permissive for propagation of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) propagation in vitro or in vivo. In certain aspects, novel nucleic acid sequences encoding porcine sialoadhesin were transfected into existing macrophage cell-lines from other species, rendering them permissive to PRRSV infection, and suitable for propagation of PRRSV. Particular aspects provide exemplary recombinant cloned cell lines that support the replication of PRRSV, with an obtainable PRRSV titre of between 2×105/ml and 2×106/ml. Additional aspects provide novel nucleic acid sequences and polymorphisms thereof that encode for porcine sialoadhesin. Further aspects provide PRRSV propagation and preparation methods using the novel recombinant cell lines, and methods for PRRSV antigen and vaccine production using same.

Abstract: Examples of the present invention include apparatus and methods for particle focusing, for particles within a fluid sample. An example apparatus, which may be a microfluidic device, comprises a substrate, a channel receiving the fluid sample, and at least one surface acoustic wave (SAW) generator. The SAW generator may comprise electrodes supported by the substrate. In some examples, the channel has a particle focusing region located near a region of the substrate surface in which a SAW is generated. Particles are concentrated within one or more particle focus regions of the sample flow (the particle focus regions being appreciably narrower than the channel dimensions) by the effects of the SAW. As an example, a pair of SAW generators can be used to generate a standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW) that is used for particle focusing.

Abstract: An electro-optic modulator is formed on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) rib waveguide. An optical field in the modulator is confined by using an electrically modulated microcavity. The microcavity has reflectors on each side. In one embodiment, a planar Fabry-Perot microcavity is used with deep Si/SiO2 Bragg reflectors. Carriers may be laterally confined in the microcavity region by employing deep etched lateral trenches. The refractive index of the microcavity is varied by using the free-carrier dispersion effect produced by a p-i-n diode formed about the microcavity. In one embodiment, the modulator confines both optical field and charge carriers in a micron-size region.
