Abstract: A soil reinforcement system including angled soil reinforcement elements to resist seismic shear forces and methods of making same are disclosed. For example, the soil reinforcement system includes an array or grid of angled soil reinforcement elements installed within the ground, wherein the angled reinforcement elements are designed to absorb and/or resist earthquake-induced seismic shear forces by transferring the applied shear forces into axial compressive and tensile forces within each of the angled reinforcement elements.
Abstract: An approximate cache system is disclosed. The system includes a quality aware cache controller (QACC), a cache, a quality table configured to receive addresses and a quality specification from the processor associated with each address and further configured to provide the quality specification for each address to the QACC, wherein the QACC controls approximation is based on one or more of i) approximation through partial read operations; ii) approximation through lower read currents; iii) approximation through skipped write operations; iv) approximation through partial write operations; v) approximations through lower write duration; vi) approximation through lower write currents; and vii) approximations through skipped refreshes.
Abstract: An apparatus related method for measuring a property of a target material. The system may include a pump device that generates a pump beam. A modulation device may receive the pump beam and generate a modulated pump beam by modulating an intensity amplitude of the pump beam, which may be directed to the target material. A probe device may generate a probe beam, which is directed to the target material. A part of the probe beam may be reflected off of the target material, and has similar frequency characteristic as the modulated pump beam. A detection device may detect the reflected probe beam and produce a signal. An analyzing device may receive the signal and calculate the target material property by comparing the modulated frequency characteristics of the signal to those of the pump beam. At least one of the pump and the probe beams may be infrared light.

Abstract: A system and method for determining the locations and types of objects in a plurality of videos. The method comprises pairing each video with one or more sentences describing the activity or activities in which those objects participate in the associated video, wherein no use is made of a pretrained object detector. The object locations are specified as rectangles, the object types are specified as nouns, and sentences describe the relative positions and motions of the objects in the videos referred to by the nouns in the sentences. The relative positions and motions of the objects in the video are described by a conjunction of predicates constructed to represent the activity described by the sentences associated with the videos.
