Abstract: Polypeptides or proteins comprising tissue inhibitor of mettaloproteinases-3 (TIMP3) or variants of TIMP3 can be used to substantially inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) binding to VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR2/KDR/Flk-1)) without substantially inhibiting VEGF binding to VEGF receptor 1 (VEGFR1/Flt-1).
Abstract: A sheet metal forming device and a process for reducing springback during forming of sheet metal. The sheet metal forming device includes a die tool that has a corner and a roller that at least partially forms the corner. The roller rotates relative to the die tool during and/or after forming of a piece of sheet metal around the corner. The rotation of the roller can be either a rotation that freely occurs during the forming process or rotation that is forcibly imposed on the roller during and/or after the forming process.
Abstract: A collimator assembly for use with radiation therapy systems, in particular stereotactic radiosurgery (“SRS”) systems, is provided. In general, the collimator assembly includes a collimator in which a plurality of concentric, conical slits is formed. Each conical slit is oriented along a different slit angle, such that radiation impinging on the top surface of the collimator is redirected along each conical slit towards a common target isocenter located at a distance away from the bottom surface of the collimator. The conical slits can be referred to as “Compton slits” because they are designed to increase the radiation output at the isocenter of the collimator by redirecting Compton scattered radiation towards the isocenter in the target region. The collimator assembly thus improves the efficiency of a radiation treatment system by utilizing Compton scattered radiation that would otherwise be lost.

Abstract: The prediction of hardware failure is obtained by operating two redundant circuit modules while one circuit module is artificially aged. The output of the two circuit modules is compared and a discrepancy between outputs indicates a projected failure of the aged modules. Aging may be accomplished by one or a combination of lowering operating voltages and re-phasing a sampling clock to reduce slack time both of which provide increased sensitivity to gate delay.

Abstract: The invention generally relates to a sample dispenser including an internal standard and methods of use thereof. In certain embodiments, the invention provides a fluid dispenser that includes a fluid chamber. A portion of an inner wall of the chamber includes an internal standard. The chamber is configured such that fluid introduced to the chamber must interact with the portion of the chamber wall that includes the internal standard prior to flowing through an outlet of the chamber. The dispenser additionally includes a member coupled to the chamber such that it can control movement of fluid within the chamber.

Abstract: The claims describe a process for designing and validating peptide-based substrates for a specified kinase. The process uses a rational approach to design peptides with a specific amino acid that is phosphorylated by a target tyrosine kinase, and upon phosphorylation shows an increased affinity for a lanthanide ion that results in an enhanced fluorescent signal. The process uses kinase specific input data sets, encodes the input into positional scoring matrices, analyses the positional scoring matrices in order to generate a candidate list of peptide sequences, compares the peptide sequences in the candidate list, substitutes residues at non-selective positions in selections from the candidate list with terbium binding residues, and then screens the substituted selections with different kinases in vitro.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a dishwasher using oscillatory flow generated from thermoacoustic effect. The dishwasher is configured such that thermoacoustic waves having high amplitude are generated from solar energy rather than electric energy, wherein the thermoacoustic waves make oscillating waves be directly transmitted to an air column and a water column formed in a closed end of a dishwashing pipeline. In this way, high-quality energy can be directly applied to washing water, whereby energy loss can be minimized, and the washing efficiency can be markedly increased.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for differentiating stem cells into neurons, and is characterized in that stem cells are treated with a culture additive comprising lipoic acid, albumin, hydrocortisone, and insulin after culturing for differentiation into neurons. Since the neurons produced according to the method for producing neurons of the present invention express nestin, neuroD1, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), neurofilament (NF), tau, microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2), and doublecortin (DCX), just as normal mature neurons do, the neurons of the present invention can be effectively used in various therapeutic agents for neurons and as cell origins for an in vitro study system.

Abstract: A machine vision system including a digital camera can be employed to inspect an object in a field of view. This includes projecting digitally-generated light patterns including first and second boundary patterns and first and second spatial patterns onto the object in the field of view. Images associated with the projected light patterns including the object are captured. Spatial cells are found in the field of view by matching codes in the first and second spatial patterns to boundaries determined based upon one of the first and second boundary patterns. The spatial cells are found in the field of view by matching codes in the spatial patterns to boundaries determined based upon the boundary patterns. The spatial cells are decoded and matched to the boundaries. Three-dimensional (3D) point cloud data of the object is generated based upon the decoded spatial cells matched to the boundaries.
