Abstract: A non-transitory, computer-readable recording medium stores therein a reinforcement learning program that uses a value function and causes a computer to execute a process comprising: estimating first coefficients of the value function represented in a quadratic form of inputs at times in the past than a present time and outputs at the present time and the times in the past, the first coefficients being estimated based on inputs at the times in the past, the outputs at the present time and the times in the past, and costs or rewards that corresponds to the inputs at the times in the past; and determining second coefficients that defines a control law, based on the value function that uses the estimated first coefficients and determining input values at times after estimation of the first coefficients.

Abstract: A wireless sensor network of devices including a sensor and a coordinator: the sensor comprising sensing means operable to detect values of a parameter; transmission and reception means for wireless communication with other devices in the network; and sensor control means operable to control a sleep pattern of the sensor; and the coordinator comprising transmission and reception means for wireless communication with other devices in the network; wherein the sensor transmission means is operable to transmit value information as to the parameter values and the coordinator transmission means is operable to transmit an indication of a suitable sensor sleep pattern taking into account the value information.

Abstract: A voice encoding method includes the steps of encoding a first frame that contains a plurality of voice data into encoded parameters, locally decoding the encoded parameters of the first frame into a second frame, performing a plurality of interpolation recovery processes that generate respective frames approximating to the first frame by using a frame or frames other than the first frame, comparing the second frame with the frames approximating to the first frame generated by the plurality of interpolation recovery processes, calculating a signal to noise ratio of each of the frames approximating to the first frame by treating the second frame as the signal, determining an index number that indicates an interpolation recovery process which provides a highest signal to noise ratio, and multiplexing and transmitting the index number with the encoded parameters.

Abstract: Data transferred from a host computer to a memory device is written into sectors whose addresses in a memory area are decoded by a decode table. Old data to be updated by the above data is erased or marked with erase flags. At a predetermined point of time, in order to create free areas, necessary data is evacuated to a primary memory media and unnecessary data indicated by erase flags is erased by a unit of predetermined memory size. Part of the memory media which has become defective is marked with a defect flag, and is replaced by an alternate area. In doing so, the decode table is rewritten to arrange the memory area.

Abstract: A display interface method and apparatus that utilize a zoom interface are provided, in which the screen changes continuously and moving or duplicating operation of an object can be performed easily. The display interface method comprises the steps of memorizing a pointer that points an object selected by an input device in a memory, displaying a small image representing the object pointed by the pointer as a display of the foreground layer on the screen, and maintaining the display of the small image representing the object without changing even if a display of other layer is zoomed. A user uses a zooming operation so that the target position is displayed on the screen, and then inputs the “paste” command, for example. Thus, a copy of the object is generated and is pasted at the designated position in the target folder.

Abstract: A method for designing an integrated circuit such as a VLSI circuit, in particular optimizing delay of a signal transmitting through signal lines connecting a signal supplying source to each of elements, whereby skew can be decreased. The method can include determining whether the signal source satisfies a fan-out restriction if the signal source supplies a signal to all of the driven elements which are directly connected to the signal source, dividing the elements into groups so that the fan-out restriction is satisfied in each of the groups and each of the groups has the same or substantially same load capacity, when the signal source does not satisfy the fan-out restriction, and inserting into each group, a buffer having a size which makes the groups of elements satisfy the fan-out restriction. The dividing and the buffer inserting are repeated until a positive determination is delivered on the fan-out restriction.

Abstract: An object cooperative network system for executing processing in cooperation between objects connected by a common communication path. Each of the objects includes a transmitting section to transmit messages that include predetermined information to the network system. In addition, each object includes a monitoring section to monitor the predetermined information of the transmitted messages, and a reaction table to indicate correspondence between the transmitted messages. Each of the objects sets information to which the object should respond in the monitoring section, and receives a message to execute processing by making reference to the reaction table when information to which the object should respond is detected.

An information collecting destination site registering unit registers information collecting destination sites for collecting documents including data such as text, image, audio sound, and the like. An event detecting unit obtains information from the registered event collecting destination sites, discriminates an updating area of the obtained information, and detects the occurrence of the event. A keyword extracting unit extracts a keyword from the updating area of the information detected by the event detecting unit. An information searching unit searches the documents in the registered information collecting destination sites by using the keyword extracted by the keyword extracting unit. An information notifying unit notifies the user of a search result.

Relating to an inverter which converts DC input into AC output and supplies the AC output to a load, change in a circuit current of the inverter is detected through the medium of magnetic flux change due to the change in the circuit current caused by discharge. For example, if change in a current occurs in the circuit current of the inverter by disconnection discharge or ground-fault discharge occurring in a current route including a load of the inverter, magnetic flux change occurs in circuit wiring and a space of a core gap of a transformer of the inverter. The change in the circuit current is detected through the medium of the magnetic flux change without contacting with the circuit wiring or the transformer.

Abstract: A POS (point-of-sale) system includes a POS terminal having an identification information obtaining section (21) to obtain, at a point of sale, identification information for identification of a customer and a commodity sales managing unit (10) has a purchase history data creating section (13) to create purchase history data from sales information, a storage (12) to store the purchase history data associated with the identification information and a sending section (11) to send, on an appointed day, the purchase history data concerning a predetermined time period to the customer. With this system, customers can conveniently use purchase history data together with household-expenditure software. This system can be constructed at a low cost and purchase history data can be effectively used.

Abstract: A small-sized magnetic field generator which is suitable for mass production and provides better output stability. A plurality of coils are formed on a non-magnetic insulating material by depositing at least one layer of conductive film in a spiral pattern. A hollow is made in the center of each coil, so that a plurality of main magnetic cores are arranged on the insulating substrate, with their ends fit into those hollows. By supplying appropriate electrical signals to drive the coils individually, their combined magnetic field can be controlled to have an arbitrary distribution. This combined magnetic field is applied to a magneto-optical target device held on the insulating material.

Abstract: A receiving unit for receiving a CDMA system signal having a plurality of multipath components is intended to reduce the size. A receiving section receives a CDMA system signal. A storage section stores the signal received by the receiving section. A demodulation section demodulates each of multipath components included in the received signal stored in the storage section with a despreading code. A control section controls for demodulating a plurality of the multipath components by causing the demodulation section to perform a time division multiplex process. A Rake combining section performs the maximal ratio combining of output from the demodulation section to generate a demodulated signal.
