  • Patent number: 5983967
Abstract: The invention concerns a tool head for shaping machine designed to machine the side segments of tree trunks. The tool head has a rotationally driven main body (1) with several groups of chipper blades (2, 3) round its circumference. The front chipper blade (2) in each group and a front-mounted finishing tool, e.g. a segment (4) of a circular-saw blade, are mounted on a common tool carrier (5). The tool carrier (5) is detachably attached to the tool-head main body (1) and is held in place by clamps (16). If, as a result of wear, it becomes necessary to replace a tool, the tool carrier is replaced after the clamp (16) has been loosened.

  • Patent number: 5427163
Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for cutting squared timber into a number of thin boards. Individual boards 32 are cut off by a blade 30 from the squared timber in each of the successive cutting machines 14a-g, essentially in longitudinal direction of the squared timber. The thickness of the squared timber 26 is selected in such a way that, once an integral number of boards having a predetermined thickness are cut off, a residual board remains which is reduced to the same thickness d as the boards 32 by shaving. The shaving preferably takes place by placing a planer 18 after the last cutting machine 14g. The installation 10 is equipped with a material feed 12 and a conveying system 20 for removing the cut boards, the cutting machines and the planer are also connected to one another by conveying devices 16, 24.

  • Patent number: 5400843
Abstract: Sheets of wood are cut from a timber piece along a guide and against a cung blade. A transverse taper of the wood piece is measured as the wood piece is conveyed. In accordance with changes in the measured transverse taper, the guide or the blade is pivoted about an axis extending perpendicular to the blade edge as the wood piece is being conveyed. Also, the longitudinal taper of the wood piece can be measured as the wood piece is conveyed. In accordance with the changes in the measured longitudinal taper, the distance between the blade edge and the wood guide is varied as the wood piece is conveyed.

  • Patent number: 5318083
Abstract: An apparatus for severing thin boards from squared timber includes a guide urface upon which a squared timber is conveyed and pressed against a cutting edge of a blade, as well as a counter pressing edge. The adjustment of the distance between the guide surface and a plane parallel thereto which extends through the blade cutting edge (i.e., the thickness of the thin board to be cut) is effected by relative adjustment of the blade cutting edge to the guide surface in an inclined plane which forms an acute adjustment angle .alpha. with a line normal to the guide surface. Because of the relative adjustment of the blade cutting edge to the guide surface along the angle .alpha., when a different board thickness is desired, the distance between the blade cutting edge and the counter pressing edge in the cutting direction is automatically adapted. In a preferred embodiment of the apparatus, the width of an exit guide channel for the severed thin boards can also be simultaneously set to the desired board thickness.

  • Patent number: 5291927
Abstract: An apparatus for truing twisted wooden boards by twisting them in an oppoe direction, comprises an upper set of parallel plates and a lower set of parallel plates. A channel is formed between opposing edges of the upper and lower plates. The upper plates are pivotable about an upper pivot axis, and the lower plates are pivotable about a lower axis. Those axes are oriented transversely relative to a longitudinal axis of the channel and are situated at an inlet end of the channel. A pivoting mechanism causes the plates to be displaced vertically relative to one another to twist the channel about its longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 5123319
Abstract: A circular saw shaft for cutting wood comprises a motor-driven shaft and a ircular saw blade mounted on the shaft. A support disk is mounted on the shaft in spaced relationship to the saw blade to apply to the wood a supporting force in a direction extending parallel to the axis of rotation of the shaft. The support disk can be fixed to the shaft, or biased along the shaft axis by springs. In lieu of springs, the support disk could be elastically flexible.

  • Patent number: 5069977
Abstract: A multi-ply solid wood structure, such as a beam, a board or a truss, and a ethod of manufacturing such wood structures are disclosed. The wood structure comprises wood lamellae that are joined together, wherein the wood lamellae are produced by a chipless separation from squared timber using a blade or a knife, and wherein the lamellae have a knife side that was adjacent to the knife during the process of separation and an opposite side that is remote from the knife side. In one embodiment, the wood lamellae are arranged in the multi-ply solid wood structure such that, when viewed from a center plane of the wood structure extending generally in parallel to the external surfaces of the lamellae of the wood structure, the opposite side of each wood lamellae is directed toward the two external surfaces of the wood structure.

  • Patent number: 5052452
Abstract: A method wherein a length of squared timber can be completely separated i a number of thin boards having a predetermined thickness without an excessively thin or excessively thick unusable residual board being left over is disclosed. The method includes measuring the thickness of the residual squared timber after one or more thin boards have been separated, and feeding the thickness measurement back to the cutting apparatus to adjust the setting of the apparatus. The method is useful on an apparatus that separates a length of squared timber into thin boards without producing chips and without timber loss, and wherein the predetermined board thickness cannot be set exactly because of variations in the property parameters of the wood.

  • Patent number: 4977940
Abstract: Boards that have been separated by a chipless cutting method using an inced blade, are twisted and, in most instances, this twist has to be corrected before boards that have been produced in this manner can be used. An apparatus in which a plurality of pairs of rollers are arranged in tandem withing a main frame is used to do this. Each pair of rollers can be pivotted about the longitudinal axis of the main frame relative to the proceding pair. This forms a board guide channel that extends in the longitudinal direction of the main frame and which is twisted approximately about the longitudinal axis of the main frame. The boards that are to be straightened pass through the board guide channel and are permanently deformed, which compensates for the twist that originally existed in the board.

  • Patent number: 4907632
Abstract: A tree trunk is fed to a cutting station along a centerline line by a pluity of groups of centering rolls spaced along the centering line. Some rolls are driven to advance the trunks. The groups of rolls are adjustable from a centering mode to a non-centering mode by either retracting the rolls or unloading the rolls. During the advancement of a trunk successively through the roll groups, the groups are successively adjusted between their centering and non-centering modes such that roll groups located to support front and rear ends of the trunk are in their centering modes, while at least one roll group disposed therebetween is in its non-centering mode.

  • Patent number: 4848427
Abstract: In a method for profile chipping, the necessary chipping out of wany-edged corners laterally defining a side board (4) to be separated is carried out in such a manner that firstly in a direction perpendicular to the trunk axis saw incisions (6) are made to the full depth of the corner but that material adjacent the saw incision (6) is simultaneously chipped out by chipping blades only to a lesser depth, and in a second working step in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction (17) remaining corner material (20) is chipped out by means of chipping blades and simultaneously a second saw incision (18) is made. The side board (4) exposed in this manner is separated by a saw severance cut. This provides throughout corner faces worked by saw cut which do not have any material splits due to chipping blades.
