  • Patent number: 4907632
Abstract: A tree trunk is fed to a cutting station along a centerline line by a pluity of groups of centering rolls spaced along the centering line. Some rolls are driven to advance the trunks. The groups of rolls are adjustable from a centering mode to a non-centering mode by either retracting the rolls or unloading the rolls. During the advancement of a trunk successively through the roll groups, the groups are successively adjusted between their centering and non-centering modes such that roll groups located to support front and rear ends of the trunk are in their centering modes, while at least one roll group disposed therebetween is in its non-centering mode.

  • Patent number: 4848427
Abstract: In a method for profile chipping, the necessary chipping out of wany-edged corners laterally defining a side board (4) to be separated is carried out in such a manner that firstly in a direction perpendicular to the trunk axis saw incisions (6) are made to the full depth of the corner but that material adjacent the saw incision (6) is simultaneously chipped out by chipping blades only to a lesser depth, and in a second working step in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction (17) remaining corner material (20) is chipped out by means of chipping blades and simultaneously a second saw incision (18) is made. The side board (4) exposed in this manner is separated by a saw severance cut. This provides throughout corner faces worked by saw cut which do not have any material splits due to chipping blades.

  • Patent number: 4589456
Abstract: An apparatus for producing squared timbers by means of severing portions or boards from opposite surfaces of the log without creating either chips or sawdust characterized by oscillatory opposed banks of staggered blade units with the blades of each unit extending progressively toward the axis of the log as the log passes therebetween. To provide improved surface quality of the boards produced, the apparatus has one of the banks of blades rigidly mounted in a first adjustable carriage and the other bank is mounted in a subframe movable in a second adjustable carriage with the subframe and other bank being urged into engagement with the log under a predetermined contact.

  • Patent number: 4503892
Abstract: In a device for producing flat boards separated from a square timber trunk by blades in a non-cutting manner a straightening device is provided for each blade. Each straightening device includes an adjustable bending roll mounted at one side of the board separated from the trunk in a curved state and a rotatable flexible element which forms at the side of the board opposite to the bending roll a continuous flexible pressure surface upon rotation of the flexible element.

  • Patent number: 4501178
Abstract: A device for severing round timber includes a rotatable circular saw and a transversal feeding device feeding round timber pieces towards the saw and for feeding cut sections of the timber from the saw towards the discharge end of the device. The feeding device includes a number of rotary conveying chains arranged in groups in the feeding direction at one side of the saw and at the opposite side of the saw. The conveying chains of two groups extend in the feeding direction such that they include an acute angle with each other and diverge from one another whereby timber sections cut off by the saw tend to move away from each other and, after being cut off, do not contact the saw teeth in the area of the saw blade.

  • Patent number: 4408510
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for cutting boards from tree trunks in which transverse cuts are made in a tree trunk which extend into the trunk a predetermined depth and thereafter longitudinal cuts are made into said trunk, which cuts pass through a plane passing through the inner ends of the transversal cuts, whereby the boards are separated from the trunk. The apparatus for cutting boards from tree trunks comprises guide rollers for advancing a trunk in a longitudinal direction, saw units adapted to move in a vertical and in a longitudinal directions to produce the transverse cuts and saw blades movable in the longitudinal direction to produce the longitudinal cuts after the transversal cuts have been made.

  • Patent number: 4335767
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for efficiently producing machined lumber products such as boards and squared timber is described wherein, after initial four-sided planing of a log, the remaining wany edge regions are milled using saw/chipper units which present, at each milled region, a relatively smooth and a relatively rough surface. The final step in log processing involves sawing the log along the plane of the rough milled surfaces so as to yield a pair of substantially smooth, severed boards, as well as a smooth central timber or cant. The apparatus includes respective, carriage-mounted, shiftably adjustable heads (each having a chopping tooth member and an adjacent saw blade of substantially the same diameter) along with cooperating second saw blades.

  • Patent number: 4327789
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for processing elongated logs to give maximum production of lumber is described wherein the log is initially cut to present four flattened faces thereon with wany edge regions between adjacent faces, followed by first partially milling the wany edge regions with severance of boards from opposed log faces, and thereafter completing the milling of the wany edge regions with subsequent removal of additional finished boards. Such stepwise partial milling of the wany edge regions materially increases the amount of lumber obtainable from a given log, as compared with prior practices. In preferred forms, the log is processed in an improved apparatus including log turning stations having a pair of pivotally mounted, opposed log-gripping arms; the respective arms are supported on a circular frame which is itself rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the log.

  • Patent number: 4220185
Abstract: Apparatus for producing machined timber from round timber logs comprises a eed device for receiving a log and feeding it longitudinally through at least one machining device whereby the middle region of the log is machined into squared timber. The wood sections lying outside the squared timber, on two mutually opposite sides of the round timber log, are separated into boards or planks during the feed movement of the log in its longitudinal direction, in a plurality of successive cutting operations. The machining device has a plurality of cutters staggered one behind the other, which cutters are combined into groups arranged in a frame which can be driven with an oscillating movement. A presser strip is associated with each cutter, and before each presser strip in the machining direction there is arranged a guide strip which contacts the outer surface of the log being machined.

  • Patent number: 4086944
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing round logs in which substantially the entire log is utilized to produce a relatively high value wood stock. The outer area of the log is peeled in sheets to square the central area for the formation of planks, beams, boards or the like while the peeled sheets may be dried, graded, cut to size and joined together and glued to form strips of any desired length and width which, in turn, may be glued in layers to form panels or other high value components. A plurality of powered, adjustable peeling knives are arranged in opposed sets to machine the log as it is caused to pass thereby on a conveyor. In one form of the invention the knives are driven to undergo a circular oscillatory motion while a second embodiment discloses a knife drive in which the knives are guided in a vibratory movement. A third form of drive permits a drawcut in that the peeling knives are driven in a longitudinal direction relative to their cutting edges.
