Abstract: A high speed relay for detecting multiphase faults using operating and polarizing signals from static transmission line protective relays provides an instantaneous estimate of the relative phase angle between relay signals without any loss of relay security.
Abstract: A bismuth-free, zinc oxide based varistor exhibits a controllable overshoot/undershoot voltage characteristic. The varistor is composed of zinc oxide as the primary constituent, with smaller quantities of barium, boron, one or more transition elements and aluminum. Varistor voltage versus time response is dependent on the degree of aluminum doping. Typically, more than approximately 0.003 mole percent, but less than approximately 0.1 mole percent aluminum is employed, depending on desired voltage overshoot/undershoot characteristic.
Abstract: Novel thermoplastic molding compositions of a polycarbonate, a linear low density polyolefin, a multiphase composite interpolymer of an acrylate and a methacrylate are disclosed which have good impact strengths and reprocessability.
Abstract: A rotary member for restricting the flow of high temperature gas from a first cavity, intermediate rotating and stationary members of a gas turbine engine, and a second cavity, includes a central disc bore segment having an inner circumference and an outer circumferential seal segment. A closed cavity is formed by a portion of the rotating member and a portion of the rotating seal disc, with the inner circumference of the central disc bore segment positioned in a predetermined spaced relation with respect to the rotating member, forming a gap therebetween. The closed cavity contains at least one aperture adjacent the outer circumferential seal segment. A portion of the high temperature gas flows through the aperture into the closed cavity, then exits the closed cavity through the gap formed between the inner circumference of the central disc bore segment and the rotating member. The gap in effect presents a constriction which causes a concomitant increase in the velocity of the gas through the gap.

Abstract: A fluid handling system for circulating a selected fluid medium from a selected tank through one of a plurality of wash tanks for a predetermined period of time, draining the selected wash tank and thereby returning the fluid to the selected tank, and then filling the selected wash tank from a different tank and continuing the sequence for each of the different tanks. After a wash by medium from each tank, the object being washed is removed, and another is inserted. The sequential washes are repeated. This operation continues until the contents of a predetermined one of the tanks has degraded by a predetermined increase in impurity concentration, and for thereafter initiating a cascade whereby the tank having fluid of highest impurity concentration is drained, and the contents of each other tank is transferred to an adjacent tank, and completing the sequence by filling the predetermined tank with relatively pure fluid. The cascading sequence is effected with minimal impact on the washing sequences.

Abstract: A large number of electrically conductive solid, dense feed-through paths for the high-speed low-loss transfer of electrical signals between integrated circuits of a single silicon-on-sapphire body, or between integrated circuits of several silicon-on-sapphire bodies, are provided by an electroforming method utilizing periodic reverse-current pulsing.
Abstract: Improved ceramic compositions useful for cutting tools and the like are described. They are composed of an essentially homogeneous admixture of sintered powders of an aluminum oxide base material with other refractories including zirconium oxide, titanium oxide, hafnium oxide, titanium nitride, zirconium nitride, and tungsten or molybdenum carbide. In addition to their common and improved properties of hardness and strength, many of these compositions may be made by simple cold-pressing and sintering procedures. This avoids the known drawbacks of conventional hot press production.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining a cold clearance measurement between a rotating member and a stationary member of a partially or fully assembled turbine, using measuring equipment which can be removed from within the turbine without requiring turbine disassembly.

Abstract: A vitreous arc tube is provided with constricted cylindrical neck portions intermediate the bulb portion proper and the pinched seals. The constricted necks may be formed as an incident in the blowing of the bulb out of quartz tubing. When the seal portions are pressed by the pinching jaws about the foliated inleads, the necks are maintained in substantially their original configuration and merely shrunk slightly about the inleads extending through them. An internal configuration is achieved which is substantially a surface of revolution and fin-effect is avoided.
Abstract: A coated polycarbonate article having improved resistance to degradation by ultraviolet radiation, abrasion and attack by chemical solvents comprising a polycarbonate resin article with its surface layers impregnated with an ultraviolet radiation absorbing compound and having deposited on said impregnated surface a coating comprised of (i) a thermoplastic acrylic polymer containing functional groups primer layer; and (ii) a top coat disposed on said primer layer containing a colloidal silica filled thermoset organopolysiloxane.
Abstract: A rotor comprising stacked laminations having conductor slots and axial passageways provided with closed-slot spacer assemblies that are stacked in groups between selected axially spaced rotor laminations to hold said laminations apart while sealing the conductor slots thereby to form radial cooling ducts through the laminations of the selected axially spaced groups and around the closed-slot spacer assemblies. According to the method of the invention, the spacer assemblies are secured in selected operating position by being staked to certain of the main rotor laminations, and a characteristic staking procedure is used to secure individual plates of each of the assemblies together.
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling distributed electrical loads including a microprocessor based central controller coupled via a twisted pair bidirectional data line to a plurality of microcomputer based transceiver decoders. Each transceiver decoder is coupled to a plurality of relays, each relay associated with a particular load to be controlled. Override switches and sensors, coupled to transceiver decoders provide override requests and information related to ambient conditions at the site of a load. A user defined data base includes sub-sets of relays called sectors, patterns of relay states, remote switches, a time dependent schedule and condition responses. A communication protocall and arbitration scheme provide for interactive communication between the central controller and each transceiver decoder with interfacing with the operation of any other transceiver decoder. Enhanced data storage capacity is achieved through dynamic allocation of memory space for pattern data.

Abstract: A method is disclosed of counteracting the tendency for oil to enter a compressor motor air gap. The method includes the provision of means that interrupt the normally smooth surface of a rotor to which oil would otherwise adhere. Either alternatively or additionally, a sweeping action is carried out for moving oil to stator slots adjacent to the motor air gap and thus out of the air gap. Departure from conventional rotor construction includes providing one or more grooves along the surface of the rotor. Grooves may be cut into rotor surfaces by a file or ball end mill. In other forms, grooves or dents may be coined or otherwise pressed into the rotor; or such grooves may be provided as a result of the configuration of the individual rotor laminations. The grooves may be disposed parallel to the rotor axis or disposed spiralled (clockwise and counterclockwise); and either one or a plurality of grooves may be provided.
Abstract: A sulfonated aromatic organic polymer, such as sulfonated polystyrene ion-exchange resin, is provided having N-alkylaminoorgano mercaptan groups attached to backbone sulfonyl radicals by covalent nitrogen-sulfur linkages. The ion-exchange resin can be used to effect phenol-ketone condensation in the synthesis of bisphenols.
Abstract: Selective light absorption coatings are provided for electric lamps which comprise a transparent vitreous frit containing neodymium oxide to selectively absorb radiation in the green and yellow wavelength region of the visible spectrum while transmitting the remaining visible radiation. A preferred vitreous frit is zinc borosilicate glass containing neodymium oxide which can be fired as an enamel coating on the exterior surface of the soda-lime glass envelope customarily employed for incandescent lamps. In a different preferred embodiment, the transparent vitreous frit containing neodymium oxide is admixed with an inorganic particulate filler and said mixture electrostatically deposited on the interior surface of the lamp glass envelope.
Abstract: A slideably mounted insulating shield is positioned over the terminals of a secondary disconnect attached to the side wall of a circuit breaker compartment. Inserting the circuit breaker into the compartment brings the secondary disconnect terminals on the breaker into engagement with the secondary disconnect terminals in the compartment by displacing the insulating shield. Removal of the breaker from the compartment forces the insulating shield to return to position over the compartment secondary disconnect terminals thereby isolating the disconnect terminals from inadvertent contact with an operator.
Abstract: A method is provided for improving the weatherability of a polycarbonate substrate by initially treating the surface of the polycarbonate substrate with a solution of a hydrolyzed silylated organic U.V. screen followed by the application of a curable silicone hardcoat composition onto the treated substrate.
Abstract: Improved air-drying primer compositions for solid substrates adapted for top coating with curable colloidal silica filled thermoset silicone resins comprise an acrylic ester dissolved in a mixture of 2-ethoxyethanol and 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone. In comparison with prior art primer compositions, there is no need for heat and/or ultraviolet curing of the present compositions.
