Abstract: A pultrusion resin composition comprising about 75 wt % to about 85 wt % of a phenolic resin, about 9 wt % to about 20 wt % of the reaction product of a polyhydroxy compound and an epoxy-functional polysiloxane, about 6 wt % to about 15 wt %, of a phenolic epoxy, and about 0.2 wt % to about 1 wt % of a catalyst, based on total weight of the composition. Pultruded products are formed by drawing fibrous reinforcement through a bath of the pultrusion resin composition.
Abstract: A method for making a consolidated wood product comprising coating wood components with a B-stageable, phenol-formaldehyde resole resin; heating the coated wood components to about 80 to 140° C. for a time sufficient to advance the resin to a B-stage; forming a mat or stack of the wood components coated with the B-stage resin; exposing the mat or stack of coated wood components to a saturated or superheated steam atmosphere in a hot press; and compressing the layup to form the consolidated wood product. The phenol-formaldehyde resole resin used in the method has a number average molecular weight of between about 200 and 600, has a F:P mole ratio of about 1.3:1 to 2.0:1, and has been modified with 0 to about 5.5 wt % of caustic based on resin solids.

Abstract: Phenol aralkyistion polymers can be prepared by reaction among a phenolic monomer, at least one styrenic monomer and an aryl diolefin. A phenolic monomer can be initially aralkylated in the presence of an acid catalyst with a first portion of at least one styrenic monomer to obtain an aralkylated phenol. The aralkylated phenol thereafter can be reacted with an aryl diolefin to obtain a phenol aralkylation polymer. Optionally, (though preferably) the phenol aralkylation polymer is further aralkylated with a second portion of at least one styrenic monomer. By employing specific catalyst concentrations, reactant concentrations, reaction temperatures, and reaction times, the formation of mono-functional and non-functional by-products is substantially reduced.

Abstract: A lactone chain-extended polyester polyol of the present invention comprises the reaction product of a lactone and a previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound may comprise the reaction product of (i) a lactone or an alkoxylating agent selected from the group consisting of alkylene oxides and alkylene carbonates, and (ii) a phenolic aralkylation polymer comprising the reaction product of a phenolic monomer having at least two free reactive positions; a styrene derivative; and a coupling agent. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound also may be chain-extended by reacting with a lactam to produce a lactam chain-extended polyester polyamide. The polyols and polyamides of the present invention provide unique combinations of hard and soft functionalities, which translates into materials exhibiting a unique combination of toughness and hardness.

Abstract: A process for disproportionating rosins using iodide catalysts. In one embodiment, a tall oil rosin is heated in the presence of a lithium iodide catalyst. In another embodiment, a catalyst system is formed from a mixture of lithium iodide and ferrous iodide. The mixed catalyst system completes disproportionation of tall oil rosin in about three hours. Phosphoric acid may be added to remove iron colored impurities when using the mixed catalyst system. Another aspect of the invention involves preparing a soap from the disproportionated rosin by adding a defoamer and a base, such as potassium hydroxide.
Abstract: The invention is directed to a stable phenolic dispersion of hydrophilic phenolic resin polymer using polyvinyl alcohol as protective colloid. Incorporation of a small proportion of an etherified bisphenol-A resin into an aqueous solution of a phenolic resin and a protective colloid (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol) forms a stable dispersion with low volatile organics content.
