Abstract: A phenolic resin modified with an alkali salt of sulfite or bisulfite in order to provide compatibility with a wax emulsion sizing agent, an adhesive prepared from the phenolic resin and wax emulsion, and the use of the adhesive in making bonded composites such as wood products, including, parallel strand lumber, oriented strand board (OSB), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), medium density fiberboard, wafer board and particle board, and textile products.
Abstract: Modified melamine-formaldehyde resins prepared by reacting melamine with formaldehyde at a F:M molar ratio in the range of about 1.55:1-2.5:1 under alkaline conditions, wherein the resin is prepared in the presence of about 1-10 wt % dicyandiamide and about 1-10 wt % sorbitol based on the total weight of resin solids. The resins are used to impregnate substrates in the preparation of decorative laminates. The laminates can be used to produce, for example, furniture, countertops or flooring.

Abstract: An aqueous composition containing an acid-hardenable melamine-formaldehyde resin and a nitrogen-containing acidic phosphorus curing agent made from either phosphoric acid or phosphorous acid which is curable to an intumescent composition.
Abstract: An improved resin coated particle comprises a particulate substrate, an inner coating of a curable resin and an outer coating of a substantially cured resin. These improved resin coated particles are produced by first coating the substrate with a reactive resin. A second or outer coating of a resin is then coated over the inner curable resin coating and subjected to conditions of time and temperature sufficient to substantially cure said outer coating while the inner coating remains curable. The particles can be used in a method for treating subterranean formations, which comprises placing in or adjacent to the formation a quantity of the resin coated particle and allowing them to cure into a high strength permeable mass in the formation.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to the formation of phenol alkylation polymers which release negligible phenol and formaldehyde emissions. The phenol aralkylation polymers of the present invention are derived from a phenolic monomer, at least one styrene derivative and an aryl diolefin. In addition to the phenolic monomer, styrene derivative and aryl diolefin, other reactants may be introduced to produce a product with particular properties.

Abstract: This invention relates to a resin composition capable of being thermally cured having both a long pot life at low temperatures and a fast curing rate at higher temperatures containing a mixture of (a) a phenol-formaldehyde resole resin, and (b) a latent curing agent selected from a particular class of nitrogen-containing acidic phosphorus compounds made from either phosphoric acid or phosphorous acid.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the formation of phenol alkylation polymers which release negligible phenol and formaldehyde emissions. The phenol aralkylation polymers of the present invention are derived from a phenolic monomer having at least three free reactive aromatic ring positions, at least one styrene derivative and an aryl diolefin. In addition to the phenolic monomer, styrene derivative and aryl diolefin, other reactants may be introduced to produce a product with particular properties.

Abstract: A guanidine-modified phenol-formaldehyde resole resin by reacting formaldehyde and phenol at a formaldehyde to phenol mole ratio above about 1.5:1 in the presence of an effective amount of an alkaline catalyst and in the presence of a catalytic amount of a guanidine salt. The resin is suitable for use in adhesives for high moisture content substrates.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for preparing phenol aralkylation polymers by reaction among a phenolic monomer, a styrenic monomer and an aryl diolefin, characterized by the absence of a solvent, wherein a phenolic monomer is initially aralkylated in the presence of an acid catalyst with a first portion of at least one styrenic monomer to obtain an aralkylated phenol, the aralkylated phenol is reacted with an aryl diolefin to obtain a phenol aralkylation polymer, and then optionally, (though preferably) the phenol aralkylation polymer is further aralkylated with a second portion of at least one styrenic monomer.
