  • Patent number: 6261941
Abstract: Generally, the present invention can be viewed as providing a method for manufacturing a multilayer wiring substrate. Briefly described, the method can be broadly conceptualized by the following steps: forming a first conductive connection on a first insulating layer; forming a conductive post on the first conductive connection; forming a second insulating layer on the first conductive connection, the first insulating layer, and the conductive post; exposing the conductive post by removing a portion of the second insulating layer; and forming a second conductive connection on the second insulating layer such that the second conductive connection is electrically connected to the first conductive connection via the conductive post. The second insulating layer can be formed via dry film lamination. In addition, the conductive posts can be exposed by either forming holes in the second insulating layer or by roughening the surface of the second insulating layer.

  • Patent number: 6136406
Abstract: A tailored structural member that is designed to generate a yield-type response, with applicability to the arrest of a moving body. The structural member comprises a primary load path connected in parallel to a longer secondary load path at a pair of common nodes. The primary load path is designed to fail at a lower load than that required to fail the secondary load path when subjected to a tensile force. As a result of the load redistribution achieved through the use of the redundant paths provided by the primary and secondary load paths, the structural member dissipates more kinetic energy from the moving body within a given set of displacement and deceleration force constraints than is possible using a conventional, uniform cross-section member.

  • Patent number: 6126086
Abstract: An oscillating capillary nebulizer with electrospray which is capable of nebulizing a liquid sample flow at microflow and normal liquid flow rates. The oscillating capillary nebulizer with electrospray comprises a pair of coaxial capillary tubes which are friction-fit mounted by way of peek tubing ferrules. A source of electric potential is connected to the inner capillary for production of an electric field in the vicinity of the distal end of the inner capillary. The dimensions of the inner and outer capillary tubes are such that an annular spacing is created between the inner surface of the outer capillary tube and the outer surface of inner capillary tube. A liquid sample is introduced into the nebulizer through the inner capillary tube. A gas flow path is provided by the space between the inner and outer capillary tubes. The gas enters the gas flow path through a port in the side of the outer capillary tube. At least the inner capillary tube is made of flexible material.

  • Patent number: 6117973
Abstract: New electron transfer moiety labeled nucleic acid analogue probes are provided that can be used in methods for determining nucleic acids in a sample. The new probes can be prepared using novel monomer subunits in a chemical synthesis route. The nucleic acids can be determined by binding the probe molecules to the nucleic acid and inducing electron transfer within the complex formed. The occurrence of the electron transfer is determined as a measure of the nucleic acid.

  • Patent number: 6111520
Abstract: Several sensors are provided for determining one of a number of physical properties including pressure, temperature, and other physical conditions. In general, the sensors feature a resonant circuit with an inductor coil which is electromagnetically coupled to a transmitting antenna. When an excitation signal is applied to the antenna, a current is induced in the sensor circuit. This current oscillates at the resonant frequency of the sensor circuit. The resonant frequency and bandwidth of the sensor circuit is determined using an impedance analyzer, a transmitting and receiving antenna system, or a chirp interrogation system. The resonant frequency may further be determined using a simple analog circuit with a transmitter. The sensors are constructed so that either the resonant frequency or bandwidth of the sensor circuit, or both, are made to depend upon the physical properties such as pressure, temperature, presence of a chemical species, or other condition of a specific environment.

  • Patent number: 6112019
Abstract: A distributed instruction queue (DIQ) in a superscalar microprocessor supports multi-instruction issue, decoupled data flow scheduling, out-of-order execution, register renaming, multi-level speculative execution, and precise interrupts. The DIQ provides distributed instruction shelving without storing register values, operand value copying, and result value forwarding, and supports in-order issue as well as out-of-order issue within its functional unit. The DIQ allows a reduction in the number of global wires and replacement with private-local wires in the processor. The DIQ's number of global wires remains the same as the number of DIQ entries and data size increases. The DIQ maintains maximum machine parallelism and the actual performance of the microprocessor using the DIQ is better due to reduced cycle time or more operations executed per cycle.

  • Patent number: 6078844
Abstract: Disclosed is an optimal arbitrary time-delay (OAT) filter to shape input signals by which a controlled motion is actuated in a physical system. The filter minimizes unwanted dynamics from being created by the actuation of the controlled movement in the physical system. The filter generally comprises three coefficients which are multiplied by the discrete samples of the input signal in a digital filter performing a convolution function. The samples multiplied by the three coefficients are separated by an arbitrary time delay. In this manner, three separate signals are generated. The results of these multiplication operations are summed in real time, thereby generating a filtered input signal which is sent to actuate the controlled motion of the physical system with minimal unwanted dynamics.

  • Patent number: 5982117
Abstract: A method for estimating and controlling the rotor position of a SRM comprises the steps of sampling phase currents and estimating phase fluxes from at least one excited phase of the SRM, sampling phase currents and estimating phase inductances from at least one unexcited phase of the SRM, and estimating the rotor position by determining a rotor position that is common to the estimated phase flux and the estimated phase inductance solutions to predetermining flux and inductance models. The estimation of rotor position can be less sensitive to measurement noise by applying a least squares technique. Once the rotor position has been estimated by the above method, the position of the rotor can be controlled so as to provide an overall effective control of the SRM. In particular, once the position of the rotor is estimated, the excitation provided to the motor is then adjusted to urge the rotor from its current position, velocity or torque toward a desired position, velocity or torque.

  • Patent number: 5974869
Abstract: A non-vibrating capacitance probe for use as a non-contact sensor for tribological wear on a component. The device detects surface charge through temporal variation in the work function of a material. A reference electrode senses changing contact potential difference over the component surface, owing to compositional variation on the surface. Temporal variation in the contact potential difference induces a current through an electrical connection. This current is amplified and converted to a voltage signal by an electronic circuit with an operational amplifier.

  • Patent number: 5928489
Abstract: A low temperature method and apparatus for removing halides from relatively low temperature gas mixtures (below about 150.degree. C.) using an electrochemical cell provided with inert electrodes and an electrolyte which will provide anions compatible with the halide anions formed at the anode. The electrolyte is elected to provide inert stable cations at the temperatures encountered. The gas mixture is passed by the cathode where the halides are converted to X.sup.-. The anions migrate to the anode where they are converted to a stable gaseous form at much greater concentration levels. Current flow may be effected by utilizing an external source of electrical energy or by passing a reducing gas such as hydrogen past the anode.

  • Patent number: 5864780
Abstract: A subband coder with jointly optimized multistage residual quantizers and entropy coders for image coding which allows the subband coder to exploit both linear and non-linear dependencies that may exist within and across the subbands. Both inter- and intra-band dependencies are simultaneously exploited via jointly optimizing the subband coders and entropy coders in an entropy constrained optimization framework involving rate, distortion and complexity. The multistage quantization structure and the effectiveness of the statistical modeling algorithm results in an attractive balance among reproduction quality, rate and complexity.
