  • Patent number: 8973853
Abstract: In a process for producing a particulate polysaccharide derivative by dry-grinding a moist polysaccharide derivative, one or more of the properties selected from median diameter, median length, bulk density and dissolution rate is controlled by controlling the temperature of the polysaccharide derivative prior to dry-grinding. Advantageously one or more of the properties selected from median diameter, median length, bulk density and dissolution rate of the particles after dry-grinding is adjusted to a first value by a first temperature of the polysaccharide derivative prior to dry-grinding and is adjusted to a second value by a second temperature.

  • Patent number: 8973942
Abstract: An active bolster mounts at an interior trim surface of a passenger compartment in an automotive vehicle. A plastic-molded, expandable front wall deploys toward a passenger in the passenger compartment. A plastic-molded back wall is joined around a substantially sealed perimeter with the front wall to form an inflatable bladder. The back wall includes an inflator receptacle defined by a raised recess wall having an inflator aperture. An inflator with a gas outlet end and an electrical connector end is received in the inflator aperture with the gas outlet end inside the inflatable bladder. The recess wall has a predetermined thickness for substantially retaining shape during inflation of the bladder. The inflator receptacle includes a flexible seal disposed around an inner edge of the inflator aperture comprised of a flashing edge bearing against the inflator and having a thickness less than the predetermined thickness of the recess wall.

  • Patent number: 8975341
Abstract: Modifying agents, e.g., a poly(sulfonyl) azide, are attached to a substrate surface, e.g., the surface of a polyolefin particle, by a process comprising the steps of: A. Contacting in an open contact zone and under a flow of inert gas a substrate with a modifying agent, binding agent, e.g., a phenolic-based antioxidant, and a liquid mixing agent, e.g., methylene chloride, to form a substrate mixture; B. Closing the contact zone and stopping the flow of inert gas to the contact zone; C. Agitating the substrate mixture under the inert gas in the closed contact zone to commence evaporation of the liquid mixing agent; D. Reducing the temperature and pressure of the closed contact zone while continuing to agitate the substrate mixture; and E. Completing the substantial evaporation of the mixing agent from the substrate mixture by opening the contact zone and initiating an inert gas flow while continuing agitation of the substrate mixture and maintaining a reduced pressure.

  • Patent number: 8973654
Abstract: A system for anchoring an expandable tubular to a borehole wall comprises a support member having a first end fixed relative to the outside of the tubular and a second end comprising a ramping surface. An anchor member has a first end fixed relative to the outside of the tubular and a second end extending toward the support member, the second end being movable relative to the outside of the tubular. The support member includes a ramp surface that tapers in the direction of the anchor member. Expansion of the portion of the expandable tubular between the first support end and the first anchor end causes the axial device length to shorten, wherein the difference in length is sufficient to cause the second anchor end to move radially outward and engage the borehole wall as a result of engagement with the ramping surface.

  • Publication number: 20150066261
Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine and a non-selectable-gear transmission having an electric machine mechanically coupled to the engine. The vehicle may have one or more controllers programmed to, in response to a request for passive neutral mode, pull-down the engine and inhibit engine pull-up while disabling the electric machine such that the vehicle coasts with minimal rotational inertia and electrical losses. The one or more controllers may be further programmed to, in response to a subsequent request for drive mode during the passive neutral mode, permit engine pull-up while enabling the electric machine such that the vehicle resumes drive.

  • Publication number: 20150059689
Abstract: A system for targeting an air-fuel mixture flow pattern within the intake port of an internal combustion engine is provided. The system includes a flow pattern control plate movably provided within the intake port. The plate includes at least one air-fuel mixture funneling opening. The opening is rounded and is preferably ovoid. Preferably there are two openings with one opening being larger than the other. The upstream side of the plate includes a sloped surface formed from its edge toward the openings, thus funneling the air-fuel mixture passing from the upstream side, through the plate, and to the downstream side. The size, shape and number of openings can be selectively adjusted thus making the system tunable. The intake port includes a sloped portion formed on its inner surface adjacent the flow pattern control plate to funnel the flow of the air-fuel mixture through the openings formed in the plate.

  • Publication number: 20150061376
Abstract: A vehicle is disclosed comprising a pre-charge circuit, including a resistor, that selectively connects a traction battery to an electrical impedance. A controller is programmed to inhibit pre-charging for an amount of time when a predetermined number of pre-charge cycles have occurred within a preceding predetermined period of time. The predetermined number of pre-charge cycles may be based on a voltage or current magnitude across the resistor during the previous pre-charge cycles. The predetermined number of times may be modified based on prior successful and failed pre-charge cycles. A method of limiting a temperature increase of a pre-charge resistor is disclosed comprising counting a number of prior pre-charge cycles and inhibiting pre-charging when the number of prior pre-charge cycles within the preceding period of time exceeds a threshold.

  • Publication number: 20150059700
Abstract: A method for controlling an engine supplied with multiple fuels in which the vapor purge flow into the engine from multiple vapor storage devices each coupled to a respective, but equal number of multiple fuel tanks controlled to have the same proportion of total vapors purged as a proportion of liquid fuel delivered to the engine from said respective one of the said multiple fuel tanks. The method includes increasing the delivery of fuel from one of the multiple fuel tanks containing fuel with the highest-octane rating of all the fuel tanks when the vapor storage canister coupled to the fuel tank with the highest-octane fuel is not being purged of its fuel vapors. Additionally, the method further comprises a feedback control responsive to an exhaust gas oxygen sensor to adjust said fuel delivered from said multiple fuel tanks to the engine to maintain engine air-fuel ratio around stoichiometry.

  • Publication number: 20150061708
Abstract: Systems, apparatus, and methods detect a current sensor error in an FOC electric machine system. A voltage command is monitored to detect the presence of an ac component can indicate that an error has occurred at a current sensor. By way of example, a sensor fault detection module can be configured to determine the deviation between an actual voltage command and an ideal voltage command to provide a complex deviation vector. By transforming the deviation vector to a reference frame rotating at the fundamental frequency of the command voltage, a dc component of the positive and negative sequences can be filtered, and their amplitudes determined. Error detection can be based on the total amplitude of the fundamental component, determined by positive and negative component amplitudes. The invention enables an FOC system to operate with two current sensors, rather than three, and provides a dedicated fault diagnostic for a current sensor.

  • Publication number: 20150066265
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for dynamically allocating engine torque and motor torque in a hybrid vehicle to meet operator torque demand. The allocation is adjusted by constraining the maximum engine torque allowable under selected conditions to provide a better trade-off between performance and fuel economy. A maximum engine torque that provides best fuel economy is learned during engine operation at different engine speed-load conditions based on a deviation in spark retard torque ratio from a threshold ratio as spark timing is moved to MBT.
