Abstract: A system and method for controlling first and second phase shiftable camshafts in a variable cam timing engine is provided. The method includes determining when the first camshaft is moving toward a first scheduled phase angle with respect to the crankshaft with a larger camshaft angular positioning error than the second camshaft. Finally, the method includes slowing down the first camshaft so that synchronized camshaft positioning can be better achieved.

Abstract: The invention relates to an internal combustion engine comprising a fuel injector (2) for each cylinder; a fuel injection control unit (4) for controlling fuel injection quantity and a piston (5) in each cylinder whose compression action causes a mixture of air and fuel to be ignited. The engine is further provided with inlet and outlet valves (6, 7) and various sensors (12-16) for measuring various engine operating parameters. During compression ignition mode, the control unit (4) is arranged to select a ?-value from a map stored in the control unit, which value is a function of engine load and engine speed, and to compare the actual ?-value with the selected ?-value; whereby the control unit is arranged to adjust the intake manifold pressure as a function of the difference between the said ?-values in order to obtain the selected ?-value. The invention further relates to a method for operating the engine and a computer readable storage device (4).
Abstract: A system and method for controlling an engine to regulate the oxygen storage level in an emission control device are provided. The system includes oxygen sensors disposed in an exhaust gas stream of the engine upstream and downstream of the emission control device. The oxygen sensors generate a feedgas and tailpipe air fuel signals. The system includes an electronic control unit (ECU) configured to obtain an adjusted feedgas air fuel ratio responsive to the feedgas and tailpipe air fuel signals to correct bias in the feedgas air fuel signal. The (ECU) is further configured to obtain an estimate of an oxygen storage level in the emission control device responsive to the adjusted feedgas air fuel ratio and the tailpipe air fuel signal. Finally, the (ECU) is configured to generate a control signal for the engine responsive to the adjusted feedgas air fuel ratio and the oxygen storage level estimate.

Abstract: A system is described for minimizing engine torque disturbances that would otherwise cause degraded drive feel by a vehicle driver. The system utilizes multiple torque transmission paths of a transaxle unit mounted to the engine. The system manipulates the torque transmitted by adjusting the clutches of multiple torque transmission paths so that the torque disturbance in the engine results in relatively constant vehicle drive torque. In one example, a potential torque increase at high speed and low airflow that may be cause using electronically actuated valves is compensated for using multiple paths of the transmission. In this way, relatively constant output torque can be maintained.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for detecting the start of combustion in the combustion chamber of an engine with autoignition. In the method, the profile of the cylinder pressure is measured and the signal which is obtained in this way is transformed using wavelet functions. A sudden rise in the absolute value of the wavelet coefficients which are obtained indicates the start of combustion. The simple and at the same time precise detection of the start of combustion which is possible in this way can be used within the framework of a feedback regulation—by changing engine operating parameters such as, for example, the start of injection of the fuel—to regulate the start of combustion in a desired way.
Abstract: A stability control system (24) for an automotive vehicle includes a plurality of sensors sensing the dynamic conditions of the vehicle. The controller (26) is coupled to the sensors. The controller (26) determines a lateral force in response to measured vehicle conditions, determines a slip angle in response to measured vehicle conditions, determines a first steering actuator angle change to decrease the slip angle until the lateral force increases, and thereafter determines a second steering actuator angle change to increase the slip angle until the lateral force decreases.
Abstract: A method and a system for improved reductant delivery to an exhaust gas aftertreatment device for a lean burn internal combustion engine exhaust are presented. The system includes a heated evaporator unit into which a mixture of reductant and air in injected, wherein the mixture is vaporized and introduced into the exhaust gas aftertreatment device. Introducing the reductant mixed with air into the heated evaporator unit prevents lacquering and soot deposits on the heated element housed inside the unit, and also speeds up the vaporization process due to better reductant distribution thus reducing system response delays and improving conversion efficiency of the exhaust gas aftertreatment device. The reductant delivery system is further improved by adding a catalyst to it, and by preventing the reductant and air mixture from coming into direct contact with the surface of the heating element.

Abstract: A method of performing object detection within a collision warning and countermeasure system (10) is provided. The method includes generating an object detection signal and generating an image detection signal. Abstract: A single-step heat treating and surface coating process is provided for steel self-piercing rivets for joining 5xxx and 6xxx aluminum panels. In this process, two coats of zinc and aluminum flakes in an inorganic binder are applied to the steel rivets. After each coating, the rivets are heated to set and cure the coats and to achieve the desired microstructure and hardness level for joining 5xxx and 6xxx aluminum panels. The coating curing step combines the heat treatment with surface coating into a single-step procedure.
Abstract: A system and method for developing signals to activate vehicle stability controllers wherein wheel speed sensors for the wheels of the vehicle are used as input variables. The wheel speed values are used in a wheel rolling radius determination. Dynamic imbalance strength estimation and dynamic imbalance strength magnitude use the computed wheel rolling radius information in a tire imbalance logic unit to develop signals to activate the vehicle stability controllers.

Abstract: In a motor vehicle driveline including a transfer case whose output is continually connected to a first output, a clutch, operating partially engaged, responds to a control signal to change the degree of clutch engagement, whereby a second output is connected driveably to the first output. A digital computer, repetitively executing a computer readable program code algorithm for operating the clutch partially engaged, continually selects a desired magnitude of clutch engagement with reference to functions indexed by vehicle speed and either engine throttle position or engine throttle rate. The computer repetitively updates at frequent intervals the desired degree of clutch engagement, and issues a command clutch duty cycle to a solenoid-controlled valve, which signal changes the degree of clutch engagement in response to the command signal.

Abstract: A stability control system (24) for an automotive vehicle as includes a plurality of sensors (28-37) sensing the dynamic conditions of the vehicle and a controller (26) that controls a distributed brake pressure to reduce a tire moment so the net moment of the vehicle is counter to the roll direction. The sensors include a speed sensor (30), a lateral acceleration sensor (32), a roll rate sensor (34), and a yaw rate sensor (20). The controller (26) is coupled to the speed sensor (30), the lateral acceleration sensor (32), the roll rate sensor (34), the yaw rate sensor (28). The controller (26) determines a roll angle estimate in response to lateral acceleration, roll rate, vehicle speed, and yaw rate. The controller (26) changes a tire force vector using brake pressure distribution in response to the relative roll angle estimate.
Abstract: The invention relates to a console box arrangement for vehicles comprising a housing having a container and a lid, the lid being pivotably arranged about an axis with respect to the container, from a closed position to a fully opened position in which the container and the lid extend in opposite directions along generally the same longitudinal direction, said housing further includes a cupholder which is pivotable about the axis and shaped so as to accommodate and support a drinking glass, cup, bottle, can or similar object. The invention is characterized in that the cupholder includes a first holder component and a second holder component which are pivotable with respect to each other about the axis so that the first holder component can be accommodated in the container and the second holder component can be accommodated in the lid. By means of the invention, an improved console box arrangement is provided, which gives access to a cupholder for the occupants in both the front and rear seats.
