Abstract: An assistance system for a vehicle capable of automated operation has a controller having a processor and tangible, non-transitory memory on which instructions are recorded. The vehicle is located on a first lane in a vicinity of one or more neighboring vehicles, the first lane merging with a second lane at a merging trajectory location. The controller is adapted to selectively execute a leader determination module when a distance of the vehicle to the merge starting point is less than a threshold value. This includes determining an estimated arrival time of the vehicle to a merge starting point of the merging trajectory location. The controller is adapted to select a leader vehicle from the neighboring vehicles based in part on their respective estimated arrival times to the merge starting point. Operation of the vehicle is controlled based in part on the leader vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20230215045
Abstract: A system for on-vehicle camera alignment monitoring includes an on-vehicle camera in communication with a controller. The controller monitors vehicle operating parameters and camera signal parameters, and captures an image file from the on-vehicle camera. A first level analysis of the image file, the vehicle operating parameters, and the camera signal parameters is executed to detect dynamic conditions and image feature parameters that affect camera alignment. An error with one of the dynamic conditions or the image feature parameters that affects the camera alignment is detected. A second level analysis of the camera signal parameters is executed to identify a root cause indicating one of the dynamic conditions or the image feature parameters that affects the camera alignment based upon the error. A camera alignment-related fault is detected based upon the root cause, and vehicle operation is controlled based upon the camera alignment-related fault.

  • Patent number: 11691566
Abstract: Presented are intelligent vehicle systems with networked on-body vehicle cameras with camera-view augmentation capabilities, methods for making/using such systems, and vehicles equipped with such systems. A method for operating a motor vehicle includes a system controller receiving, from a network of vehicle-mounted cameras, camera image data containing a target object from a perspective of one or more cameras. The controller analyzes the camera image to identify characteristics of the target object and classify these characteristics to a corresponding model collection set associated with the type of target object. The controller then identifies a 3D object model assigned to the model collection set associated with the target object type. A new “virtual” image is generated by replacing the target object with the 3D object model positioned in a new orientation. The controller commands a resident vehicle system to execute a control operation using the new image.

  • Patent number: 11685262
Abstract: A method of operating a vehicle includes a vehicle controller receiving a driver acceleration/deceleration command for the vehicle's powertrain and determining a torque request corresponding to the driver's acceleration command. The controller shapes the torque request and determines compensated and uncompensated accelerations from the shaped torque request. The compensated acceleration is based on an estimated road grade and an estimated vehicle mass, whereas the uncompensated acceleration is based on a zero road grade and a nominal vehicle mass. A final speed horizon profile is calculated as: a speed-control speed profile based on the uncompensated acceleration if the vehicle's speed is below a preset low vehicle speed; or a torque-control speed profile based on a blend of the compensated and uncompensated accelerations if the vehicle speed exceeds the preset low vehicle speed. The controller commands the powertrain to output a requested axle torque based on the final speed horizon profile.

  • Patent number: 11685288
Abstract: Presented are control systems for operating rechargeable electrochemical devices, methods for making/using such systems, and vehicles with intelligent battery charging and charging behavior feedback capabilities. A method of operating a rechargeable battery includes an electronic controller receiving battery data from a battery sensing device indicative of a battery state of charge (SOC). Using this battery data, the controller determines a number of low SOC excursions at which the battery SOC is below a predefined low SOC threshold and a number of high SOC excursions at which the battery SOC exceeds a predefined high SOC threshold. The controller then determines if the number of low SOC excursions exceeds a predefined maximum allowable low excursions and/or the number of high SOC excursions exceeds a predefined maximum allowable high excursions. If so, the controller responsively commands a resident subsystem to execute a control operation that mitigates degradation of the rechargeable battery.
