Abstract: A conduction cooled solid state laser comprises a laser rod and a pump lamp within a pump cavity in a housing constituting a heat sink, the remote exterior surfaces of the rod and lamp being covered by highly reflective metal foils in intimate contact with those surfaces and backed by a thermally conductive material between the foil and housing that is selected to provide a tailored thermal impedance. The foil acts as a highly efficient reflector and as a thermal contact element between the heat source (rod or lamp) and backing material, the latter, in either solid or fluid form, being selected to provide the desired thermal impedance between the source and sink to optimize component temperatures. The optically reflective and the heat transfer functions of the pumping operation are essentially separate from each other, enabling selection of materials for these respective functions to enhance performance of the laser and substantially simplify its construction.

Abstract: A high voltage cable/connector assembly of an improved design for substantially minimizing or eliminating damaging corona and voltage arc-over effects. The assembly in accordance with the invention includes a high voltage cable having a cable shield (e.g., a braided shield), a high voltage metal connector secured to and surrounding a portion of the cable and in physical and electrical contact with the cable shield, and a metal horn-shaped corona shield connected in series with the metal connector and defining a cavity through which a portion of the cable, including a center conductor and a surrounding bare plastic dielectric, passes longitudinally. The corona shield serves to eliminate sharp edges or abrupt terminations in the vicinity of the cable shield, metal connector and corona shield so that corona discharge is effectively prevented.

Abstract: A connecting device for securing a vertically suspended lighting fixture to the housing of an electrical junction (wiring) box in such a manner that the lighting fixture can be pivoted to an open position to enable interconnection of the fixture's and junction box's electrical wiring in a safe, facile manner. The device includes a safety means to prevent accidental removal (separation) of the fixture and junction box while in the pivoted, open position. In a preferred embodiment, the invention includes a pair of planar, substantially rectangular plate members. A first of these members is designed for being attached to the junction box and the second for being secured to the lighting fixture. Located on the second plate is a pair of upwardly projecting tab members adapted for being inserted within a corresponding pair of elongated openings located within the first plate member.

Abstract: Reactive metal-copper alloys containing specified amounts of a third metal selected from the group consisting of silicon, tin, germanium, manganese, nickel, cobalt and mixtures thereof are suitable for brazing ceramics, other non-metallic and metallic materials.
Abstract: A fluorescent lamps having colors similar to standard white can be prepared using two phosphor compositions. A blue emitting phosphor having a peak emission with a specified range and a 50% band width within a specified range is used with specific amounts of a yellow-emitting phosphor having a 50% band width within a specified range and a peak emission within a specified range provide a lamp having the same chromaticity as a standard white lamp with a higher lumer per watt than the standard white lamp. In one embodiment the blue emitting component has a second specific peak emission and a specific 50% bandwidth.
Abstract: An electrically-activated, miniature photoflash unit which includes a plurality (e.g., ten) of subminiature high voltage flash lamps arranged in a planar array. A singular mounting tab protrudes from the unit's housing and serves to connect the entire array when the tab is electrically connected to a power source (e.g., piezoelectric crystal) typically associated with many of today's cameras. Each of the lamps is inverted with respect to the tab and also serve to provide a low resistance circuit path therethrough subsequent to activation thereof.

Abstract: A method of making a photoflash lamp wherein an elongated piece of glass tubing is sealed at a first end thereof to secure a pair of lead-in wires therein. Thereafter, a first quantity of primer material is positioned within the glass tubing through a second, open end thereof and deposited on an internal bottom surface of the tubing. A quantity of combustible material (e.g., zirconium) is then air blown within the tubing member, and thereafter a thin member (mica disk) is inserted through the open end, said disk having a second quantity of primer material thereon. The tubing member is then restricted, a combustion-supporting atmosphere (e.g., oxygen) introduced therein, and the second open end of the tubing member is sealed (tipped) to define the finished envelope.
Abstract: Filament sag in tungsten-halogen lamps is significantly reduced by including within the envelope an additive selected from the group of bismuth, antimony and tellurium and combinations thereof.
Abstract: Fluorescent lamp for bio-medical treatment of skin disorders includes a layer 28 of phosphor within the lamp which phosphor absorbs short wavelength U.V. radiation and re-emits the absorbed energy at a longer wavelength.
Abstract: Disclosed is an electrical wiring device attachable to a power cord, formed of two pieces, and having a dead-front supporting contact elements of the male or female type. One of the pieces comprises the dead-front and the contact elements that it supports, integrally hinged to a first sidewall member. The dead-front in an outwardly swung position exposes the contact element terminals in a manner to facilitate connection of the power cord conductors to the terminals. When the connection is made, the dead-front is swung inwardly to a position in which the conductor lies upon the first sidewall member. A second sidewall member or cover, forming the other piece, is then slidably interengaged with the inwardly swung dead-front responsive to movement of the cover into a position overlying the first sidewall member.
Abstract: A method of making preforms from brittle metals for brazing or hardfacing consists of pulverizing the metals into a powder, mixing the powder with a liquid vehicle to form a paste, passing the paste through a coated screen having an opening in the coating with the size and shape of the desired preform, depositing the output of the screen onto a substrate and thereby making the preform, heating the preform to evaporate the liquid vehicle, and removing the preform from the substrate. The opening in the screen coating is made by exposing a photo-sensitive film to light through a photographic negative or similar mask having the image of the preform and chemically removing a portion of the film to form an opening having the shape of the preform, the film being mounted on the screen either before or after such exposure.
Abstract: A miniaturized multilamp photoflash array includes a housing member having a back portion with a printed electrical circuit on one surface thereof and a light transmittable front portion affixed to the back portion with a plurality of flashlamps affixed to and supported by the array and each flashlamp having a pair of electrical conductors in electrical contact with the printed circuit on one surface of the back portion of the housing member.
Abstract: Electrical wiring box arrangements include a wiring box, and a cable clamp device which mounts rotatably in a wall of the box adjacent to a knockout region. The cable clamp device provides a cable engaging surface which moves toward the cable as the clamp device is rotated. A non-metallic sheathed cable passing through a knockout opening in one wall of the wiring box is clamped between the edge of the knockout opening and the cable engaging surface of the clamp device mounted in a second wall of the box forming an angle with the wall having the knockout opening.

Abstract: A button-type primary electrochemical cell operative to provide a warning indication toward the end of discharge of the cell signalling an approaching end-of-life of the cell. The cell includes a pair of spaced-apart, flat, porous carbon cathode elements, each in the form of a disc, disposed within a small, generally-flat metal housing of the cell, and a generally-flat anode structure disposed between the pair of carbon cathode elements. The anode structure includes first and second electrochemically active elements, for example, lithium and calcium, having different oxidation potentials within the cell and consumable by electrochemical action within the cell during discharge of the cell. The consumption of the active elements during discharge of the cell results in the establishment of different and distinguishable operating voltages for the cell. The active elements are arranged with respect to each other such that the active element of higher oxidation potential (i.e.
