  • Patent number: 5339850
Abstract: A hand grip for canes, crutches, walkers, outrigger skis, tools, etc., includes an elongated body possessing an axially inner end provided with a recess configured for partially receiving an elongated cylindrical support member of the ambulation aid, and an axially outer end including an enlarged circular ridge for preventing axial displacement of a user's hand. A mounting post extends axially through the body, transversely securing the hand grip to the support member. An obliquely forwardly and downwardly inclined platform on an upper side of the body adjacent the inner end applies a major portion of the user's weight to the hypothenar muscles of the user's hand. A depression formed axially outwardly of the platform provides a downwardly and axially outwardly curving concave load bearing surface for engagement with thenar muscles of a hand of a user such that the thumb of the user's hand is maintained in a palmar abducted orientation.

A seat portion extends transversely between and is secured to the first and second frame sections. A wheel assembly is mounted on the frame sections so as to engage the reaction surface. The wheel assembly includes a pair of front caster wheels, a pair of rear caster wheels and a pair of central wheels. Each of the central wheels has a fixed transverse axis of rotation and is positioned intermediate the front and rear caster wheels to inhibit transverse motion. Each of the frame section carries one of the front caster wheels, one of the central wheels and one of the rear caster wheels. Each of the wheels has a lowermost tangent lying in a common plane.

  • Patent number: 5291910
Abstract: An adjustable hand grip that can slide along the vertical supports of an orthopedic crutch is provided. The hand grip can be easily fixed to the supports at different vertical elevations to accommodate the user by providing a sleeve that surrounds and slides over each vertical support. Each sleeve has an aperture that can be aligned with the apertures in the vertical support. A bracket that extends between the vertical supports rigidly connects the sleeves. A locking member for locking the sleeve to a vertical support is provided and comprises a generally U-shaped clamp that surrounds a portion of the sleeve and a pin that can be inserted through aligned apertures in the sleeve and vertical support so that the hand grip is firmly fixed to the vertical support.

  • Patent number: 5273063
Abstract: A fold-down detachable utility tray for invalid walkers is disclosed, comprising a generally rectangular tray frame in combination with a pair of locking, fold-down arms each having spring clips for securement to the upright members of an invalid walker. In one preferred embodiment, the center of gravity of the tray is located over the pivot point of the locking arms, so that the weight of objects placed on the tray causes the arms to lock more tightly, promoting stability of the tray. The locking arms each comprise an elongated angle bracket provided with a pivot. An actuator arm has a first end movably connected to the pivot and a second end slidingly engaged in a slot in the tray frame. One end of the slot is provided with a upwardly extending locking notch to hold the arm in the extended position.
