  • Patent number: 4375985
Abstract: A slurry composition and method of using the same is provided which is particularly useful in filling spent in situ oil shale retorts to form a strong load bearing mass which minimizes surface subsidence. The slurry is formed by mixing spent oil shale with 50 to 300 weight percent water and at least one material selected from the group consisting of lignosulfonate, sodium silicate, and sodium gluconate. The maximum concentration of each material selected is 4 weight percent based on the spent oil shale.

  • Patent number: 4374788
Abstract: Fibrils prepared by a differential temperature precipitation process of the type described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,013,751 are refined in isopropanol at a subambient temperature not higher than about 10.degree. C., and subsequently are treated with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol to sorb at least 1.0 weight % of polyvinyl alcohol on the fibrils. The treated fibrils, as compared with fibrils prepared by prior art processes disperse more readily in aqueous media and provide water-laid sheets having greater strength. The fibrils preferably are prepared from an olefin polymer having a weight average molecular weight of at least one (1) million.

  • Patent number: 4360044
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for blending large batches of particulate polymers that are compositionally heterogeneous into batches that are compositionally uniform. The apparatus consists of a plurality of horizontally aligned cylindrical storage bins, a common feed line for feeding particulate polymer to each of the storage bins, and conveying means running under each of the storage bins to receive particulate polymer discharged from the bins. Each bin contains six or more vertically aligned partition walls that extend radially from the midpoint of the bin to the wall to divide the bin into at least six storage compartments of substantially equal volumetric capacity. The vertical partition walls differ in height in a regular descending order so that as material is charged to and fills one compartment, it overflows the shorter wall to fill the adjacent compartment. Upon being discharged from the bin, the contents of the several compartments of the bin are mixed to provide a more homogeneous batch of particles.

Abstract: Disclosed are a method and apparatus for the in situ retorting of oil shale and purification products comprising establishing an underground in situ retort containing a mass of rubblized matter comprising oil shale and establishing a flame front within the rubblized matter. Oxygen containing gas comprising at least about 90 weight percent oxygen and diluent are passed into the retort to support combustion and form combustion gases suitable for the retorting of the rubblized mass and formation of off-gas comprising hydrogen, hydrocarbons, and contaminants. Off-gas comprising hydrogen, hydrocarbons, and contaminants is recovered from the retort and hydrocarbons and contaminants are substantially separated from at least a portion of the off-gas to produce a purified gas stream comprising hydrogen.
