    Abstract: A method of scanning and reading indicia off a display is disclosed. The method may utilize a light sensor of a mobile device to improve the quality of reading indicia, such as a barcode, off a display. A scanner illuminates the mobile device in order to increase the backlight intensity and obtain a high contrast image on the display and then ceases illumination in order to scan the high contrast image without specular reflection caused by the scanner illumination. In one embodiment, the scanner illuminates the mobile device for a period of time to achieve the maximum level of brightness that the mobile device is capable of emitting on the display in the period of time before ceasing the illumination. In another embodiment, the scanner detects whether the change in brightness is greater than predefined level before ceasing the illumination.

A live signal analyzer compares electrical signals from the EEG device with stored brain wave profiles in the database to identify entries in the database representing items that match the electrical signals from the EEG device, where items whose stored brain wave profiles match the electrical signals are considered identified items. A POS terminal is coupled to the live signal analyzer in order to log and tally items for a transaction.

    Abstract: A point of sale system capable of operating in an indicia-reading mode or a verification mode is disclosed. In the indicia-reading mode, the point of sale system configures its illumination, imaging, and processing to read indicia as part of a normal checkout process. If triggered by a user or by an event, the point of sale system may operate in a verification mode. In the verification mode, the point of sale system enables the necessary illumination, imaging, and processing to verify an item. This verification includes illuminating the item in a way that causes a noticeable response from a security mark (or marks) on the item. An image of the response may be captured and processed to authenticate/verify the item. The point of sale system may then respond to the verification and/or may store the image/results as a record of the verification.

    Abstract: The present invention embraces a system, device, and method for adding lighting effects to augmented reality (AR) content (i.e., virtual objects). Light sensors in an augmented reality (AR) system monitor an environment's lighting conditions to acquire lighting data that can be used to create (or update) virtual light sources. Depth sensors in the AR system sense the environment to acquire mapping data that can be used to create a 3D model of the environment while tracking the system's location within the environment. Algorithms running on a processor may then add the virtual light sources to the 3D model of the environment so that, when AR content is created, lighting effects corresponding to the virtual light sources can be added. The resulting AR content with virtual lighting effects appear more realistic to a user.

The battery capacity information can be used to provide insights on the timing for battery replacement and for improvement in workflows involving the device.

To be most effective, the back-end system must be able to adapt its communication/response to a worker's identity, location, and/or peripherals. To facilitate this, the present invention embraces a peripheral hub, worn by a worker. The peripheral hub uses information regarding the worker and/or his peripherals to generate a peripheral manifest. The peripheral hub can transmit the peripheral manifest to the back-end system via the base station, and using information from the peripheral manifest, the back-end system may communicate/respond appropriately to the worker.

    Abstract: A system and method allows for paperless billing transaction document exchanges between two parties to a sales transaction, with inherent document verification. In an embodiment, the system and method first encrypts the transaction document data according to a password which itself depends on unique transaction data in a particular sales document. The system and method then employs the unique data values to create a first 2-D barcode which directly represents the document data; and to create a second 2-D barcode which represents the encrypted document data. The two matrix codes are overlapped on a cell-by-cell basis into a single visual representation, employing multiple colors for different combinations of overlapped cells. At a receiving end, the two original matrix codes can be separated by extracting the two black and white 2-D barcodes from the combined color code. The data integrity of the received data is confirmed by checking that the encrypted 2-D barcode is consistent with the plaintext 2-D barcode.
