Abstract: The invention is an aqueous composition for removing coloring from hair treated with semipermanent hair colorant. The composition includes a reducing agent, at least one alcohol, water and an alkaline compound. A sufficient amount of the alkaline compound is employed to maintain the pH of the composition in the range of about 9.0 to about 11.0. The invention also includes a method of removing, or bleaching, colorant from semipermanent colored hair. The method includes applying the aqueous composition to semi-permanently colored hair producing bleached hair. Lastly, the bleached hair is rinsed and shampooed.

Abstract: A method of thermally setting hair including the sequential steps of:(a) applying a thermoplastic polyester fixative resin composition, having a pH less than about 5, to the hair prior to configuring the hair in a desired configuration;(b) contacting the hair with a thermal appliance to heat the applied polyester to its glaze transition temperature;(c) configuring the hair while the polyester is at a temperature of at least its glass transition temperature; and(d) cooling the polyester to a temperature below its glass transition temperature while the hair is in the desired configuration to harden the polyester in the shape of the configured hair. Preferably, the thermoplastic polyester fixative resin includes a plurality of neutralized sulfonate moieties, and has a glass transition temperature below about 120.degree. C., and is solubilized or dispersed in water in an amount of about 0.1% to about 20%.

Abstract: Gel antiperspirant compositions comprising an antiperspirant compound, a gelling agent selected from the group consisting of a sterol and a starch hydrolyzate ester of a C.sub.8 -C.sub.22 carboxylic acid, a carrier comprising a silicone or a hydrocarbon, and, optionally, a fatty alcohol, a fatty ester, water, or a mixture thereof, are disclosed. Aerosol antiperspirant compositions also are disclosed.

The shampoo-conditioner compositions effectively clean and condition the hair.

Abstract: A single formula, mild permanent wave reducing composition and method of permanently waving or reshaping human hair that provides a strong, long lasting curl and leaves the hair soft while minimizing further damage to already damaged hair. The composition contains a cysteamine reducing agent compound selected from the group consisting of cysteamine, a cysteamine salt, and mixtures thereof. The cysteamine compound should be present in an amount of at least about 7.8% by weight and preferably in the range of about 7.8% to about 12.5% by weight; and sufficient additional alkali, if necessary, to bring the pH of the composition to at least about 7.8 preferably about 7.8 to about 8.8. Optionally, a hair softening and/or moisturizing agent, such as glycerine is included in the composition in an amount of about 0.1% to about 15% by weight of the composition. The composition can be lotion or water wrapped and can be used with or without heat.

Abstract: A mild permanent wave reducing agent-containing composition and method of permanently waving or straightening human hair that provides a strong, long lasting curl, or long lasting straight hair formation, while minimizing hair damage. The composition includes two ionic compounds, one cationic and the other anionic, that complex in solution over a molar ratio of cationic compound to anionic compound in the range of about 1:1.2 to about 1.2:1, preferably in the range of about 1:1.1 to about 1.1:1, to provide synergy in waving efficiency, thereby providing a strongly reconfigured hair configuration (curled or straightened). At least one of the ionic compounds functions as a reducing agent for hair, capable of breaking the disulfide bonds in the hair so that the bonds later can be reformed via oxidation, when the hair is in the desired configuration. Examples of cationic compounds include thiocholine, choline, cysteineamide, cysteamine, and combinations thereof.

Abstract: Rinse-off, water-in-oil-in-water multiple emulsion compositions are disclosed. The multiple emulsion compositions comprise an external aqueous phase optionally incorporating an emulsifier and/or a second topically-active compound. The internal phase comprises a primary water-in-oil emulsion, wherein the primary emulsion comprises a first topically-active compound, a surfactant phase, an oil phase, and water.

Abstract: A hair shampoo composition comprising a cleansing surfactant; a water-insoluble hair treating compound, like a hair conditioner or an antidandruff agent; a suspending agent comprising an amine including at least one long carbon chain and a suitable acid; and a suitable carrier, and a method of treating hair are disclosed. The shampoo compositions effectively suspend the water-insoluble hair-treating compound, effectively cleanse the hair and effectively deliver the water-insoluble hair-treating compound to the hair or scalp.

Abstract: A conditioning shampoo containing an anionic surfactant, a long-chain fatty alcohol, and a cationic polyethyleneimine, has extended product stability, excellent cleansing and foaming properties, and provides excellent and improved overall conditioning to human hair, particularly superior wet and dry combing properties.

Abstract: Emulsified, low pH cosmetic compositions having improved pH stability and phase stability are disclosed. The emulsified cosmetic compositions have a pH of about 3.7 to about 4.5, and contain about 10% to about 50% by weight of a dispersed oil phase, about 2% to about 20% by weight of an acid, like a hydroxycarboxylic acid, and about 0.5% to about 2% of a quaternized phosphate ester, like linoleamidopropyl PG-dimonium chloride phosphate. The emulsified cosmetic compositions are phase stable over an extended storage period and maintain an essentially constant pH by exhibiting a pH drift of about 0.15, and usually 0.1, pH unit or less.

Abstract: An opacifier comprising an amine including at least one carbon chain of at least 16 carbon atoms or a fancy amidoamine having an alkyl group including at least about thirteen carbon atoms, and a suitable acid is disclosed. The opacifier is a salt of the long-chain amine and effectively opacifies, or pearlizes, water-based compositions, such as hair treating compositions, like shampoos, conditioners, conditioning shampoos and antidandruff shampoos; and skin treating compositions, like conditioners, moisturizers and topical medicaments.

Abstract: A method of imparting improved conditioning properties to hair comprising treating the hair with a clear conditioning composition comprising an amidoamine salt, said amidoamine salt comprising an amidoamine compound having the general structural formula: ##STR1## neutralized with a suitable acid, wherein R.sub.1 is a fatty acid chain having about 11 to about 21 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is an alkylene group having two to about four carbon atoms, R.sub.3 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or a hydroxyalkylene group having one to about three carbon atoms, R.sub.4 is methyl, ethyl or a hydroxyalkylene group having one to about three carbon atoms, and Y is a heterocyclic nitrogen-containing moiety, like morpholine or pyridine; and a silicone compound having at least one quaternary ammonium moiety.

Abstract: A conditioning shampoo containing an anionic cleansing surfactant, in an amount of about 5% to about 65% by weight, preferably about 5% to about 25% by weight, e.g., (C.sub.12 -C.sub.22) alkyl sulfate, and/or a long chain (C.sub.12 -C.sub.22) partially or fully ethoxylated alkyl sulfate, and/or a long chain (C.sub.12 -C.sub.22) alkyl sulfonate, and a copolymer of polyethyleneimine and a silicone in an amount of about 0.1% to about 20% by weight, preferably about 0.1% to about 10% by weight. The composition, provides excellent foaming, conditioning and stability, without settling of water-insoluble materials.

Abstract: A method of treating hair to reduce post-perm odor by (1) reducing the degree of reaction between a permanent wave reducing agent and a natural compound contained in hair, e.g., hair aldehydes; and/or (2) altering the malodor of products formed by the reaction of hair and a permanent wave reducing agent, during the oxidation step; and/or (3) binding a fragrance to the hair to mask any odoriferous compounds that result from reaction of a reducing agent with the hair, or from the reaction of reduced hair with an oxidizing agent; and/or (4) change the naturally occurring post-perm odor by adding a reducing agent reactant during the permanent waving process resulting in more pleasant smelling reaction products.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for reducing post perm odors, via reaction with hair aldehydes, by contacting the hair with a polyhydric phenol, particularly resorcinol or its derivatives, before, during, or after application of a reducing agent-containing waving lotion.
