Abstract: The invention is directed to the use of an aqueous protective coating composition containing a binder system and an associative thickener for industrial coatings. The associative thickener is not a polyurethane thickener and is selected so that its concentration required by the specific application method is below the critical concentration C*, defined as the thickener concentration at which the coils of the thickener polymer start to overlap of entangle calculated according to the Mark Houwink equation.
Abstract: This invention generally provides a class of novel cationic resin comprised of a cross-linked polyamine having pendant tertiary and/or quaternary amine groups linked to amine groups in said polyamine by a hydrocarbon chain including a hydroxyl group in the .beta.-position with respect to the polyamine chain. In general, these resins can comprise the reaction product of a polyamine having secondary amine groups, a crosslinking agent, and a cationizing agent having an epoxide group and a tertiary or quaternary amine (quaternary ammonium) group. These cationic resins have been found to be useful for a variety of operations in the manufacture of paper and paperboard, especially as drainage aids and stabilizers for dispersed rosin sizing agents.

Abstract: A 2-oxetanone sizing agent that is made from fatty acid(s) containing linoleic acid. Paper that is sized with the 2-oxetanone alkaline sizing agent does not encounter machine feed problems in high speed converting or reprographic machines, so the sizing agent is useful for paper including continuous forms bond paper and adding machine paper, processes for converting the paper into envelopes, continuous forms bond paper and adding machine paper.
Abstract: Water-borne paints containing reduced molecular weight polysaccharide derivatives that are resistant to enzyme hydrolysis. The water-borne paints are biostable, retaining at least about 80% of their initial viscosity 24 hours after they are inoculated with polysaccharide hydrolysis enzyme. A process for making the biostable water-borne paints has the steps: a) treating precursor polysaccharide derivative with polysaccharide hydrolysis enzyme in aqueous medium for a time sufficient to obtain reduced molecular weight polysaccharide derivative; and b) mixing the reduced molecular weight polysaccharide derivative with an effective amount of at least one other water-borne paint ingredient to obtain a water-borne paint.
Abstract: Enzymatic dehalogenation of undesirable nitrogen-free organohalogen compounds is carried out by adding a dehalogenase to an aqueous composition comprising a nitrogen-free organohalogen compound and a nitrogen-containing cationic polymer. The enzymatic dehalogenation of the nitrogen-free organohalogen compound is achieved without any substantial effect upon the nitrogen-free organohalogen compound. The dehalogenation method may be carried out via continuous, batch, or semi-continuous processes.

Abstract: This invention provides compositions comprising particulate water-soluble or water-swellable polymer at least partially agglomerated by treatment with at least one polyol, wherein the polyol is present at a level greater than about 10 wt. % based on the total weight of the composition. The particulate water-soluble or water-swellable polymer which has been at least partially agglomerated by treatment with polyol hydrates in water-containing solvents substantially faster than untreated water-soluble or water-swellable polymer, without formation of polymer lumps. The invention further provides an improved process for preparing a toothpaste composition comprising at least one dry, water-soluble or water-swellable polymer, the improvement comprising substituting for the dry, water-soluble or water-swellable polymer, particulate water-soluble or water-swellable polymer which has been at least partially agglomerated by treatment with polyol.
Abstract: A process for creping paper using a creping adhesive is described. The creping adhesive concentrate contains about 1 percent to about 25 percent by weight solids, and the solids contain oxazoline polymer and a polyamide resin polymer. The concentrate is diluted to about 0.1 to about 5 percent by weight solids and the diluted creping adhesive is applied to the surface of a drying cylinder. The paper is subsequently creped from the drying cylinder.
Abstract: Paper sizing enhancer that is a polymerization reaction product of a quaternary diallylammonium monomer and a diallylammonium monomer, as well as compositions containing the sizing enhancer and a sizing agent. The method of sizing paper with such paper sizing enhancer compound and a sizing agent provides sized paper with significantly improved sizing property characteristics, and the sized paper exhibits high print quality when used in inkjet printing applications.
Abstract: A dispersed rosin sizing composition comprising rosin stabilized by a cationic colloidal coacervate dispersing agent, the coacervate dispersing agent comprising an anionic component and a cationic component, the anionic and cationic components being present in a proportion such that the sizing composition has a zeta potential of at least about 20 millivolts. Methods of making and using the stable rosin sizing composition are also disclosed, as is sized paper made using the sizing composition.
Abstract: A sizing agent for paper that is a 2-oxetanone ketene multimer which is not solid at 35.degree. C., particularly a multimer mixture in which at least 25 weight percent of the hydrocarbon substituents contain irregularities such as branched alkyl groups or linear or branched alkenyl groups. Paper surface sized with the 2-oxetanone ketene multimer sizing agent and the method of surface sizing paper are also disclosed.
